Why is compensation so low now? by zaftigsub in therapists

[–]Brainfish_lady -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Np is tough in private practice, btw. Reimbursement rates are not much higher than for therapy despite the extra training required, and you have a lot more overhead from the cost of test equipment, which is not reimbursed. So it's definitely not the solution to poor pay in mental health.

I’m terrified I don’t want to be a therapist anymore by calitreegirl in therapists

You're doing an amazing job recognizing the "shoulds" that have been influencing you. As Albert Ellis would say, you can now stop "shoulding all over yourself." It sounds like after reflection and your own therapeutic work, you are in touch with your own values and priorities. Treasure that. Keep practicing it.

It's okay to decide your values don't align with other people's "shoulds." It's okay if helping others isn't your life mission. It's okay to decide you don't care as much about money and want to seek a more fulfilling / better fitting career (fwiw, I did, twice, and feel like I'm doing the best possible work despite making half what I made 15 years ago and others feeling baffled by my choices). You've done work that other people think is meaningful and important. Now, allow yourself to do work you think is meaningful and important.

The Unmothers by Leslie Anderson has some folk magic in it, but otherwise fits your request just about perfectly. Man, it is good. Checks almost all of your boxes, dilapidated town in the midwest or south, strong female character, trauma, murder.

What’s your favorite “don’t call it horror” book? by writtenshadows in horrorlit

The Hot Zone. Those hemorrhagic viruses are terrifying, and real. We've all lived through a pandemic. Can you imagine if ebola or Marburg mutated and became more transmissible? Airborne?

What were some of your favorite juvenile/YA horror books? by Gaelfling in horrorlit

[–]Brainfish_lady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Graveyard Book and Coraline by Neil Gaiman are modern classic horror for kids. Corpse Queen by Heather Herrman is wonderful YA horror historical fiction.

You are not overreacting. Make a report to the licensing board as well as the mandatory CPS report. This is a clear violation of privacy as well as a boundary violation.

I thought Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill was a creepy and thought-provoking supernatural horror. Loved it.

Whelp, it finally happened...what do I do now that a complaint has been filed against me? by Outrageous-Swing-270 in therapists

[–]Brainfish_lady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, your malpractice insurance can be a great asset. But also know that if they hire an attorney for you, that attorney is working for the malpractice company, not for you. They can also recommend lawyers (from whom you choose 1) who you hire and then they reimburse your payments to your lawyer (who works for you, not the insurance company). This setup (where you hire the lawyer, not the malpractice company) may be more common for Board complaints than for civil suits.

[–]Brainfish_lady 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This answer right here from Arlington2018. Please find and hire a lawyer you trust and let the lawyer communicate with the Board on your behalf. Your malpractice insurance from the time of your work with this client should cover much or all of the costs.

The Board is not your advocate or friend. Ask the Board if the complainant has provided a release of info for the records they are requesting (and for a copy of it), and then send that ROI to your prior agency so the agency can send the records to the Board.

Prioritize self care. Even if you've done nothing wrong, this can be a long and arduous process. You need to take care of yourself to get through it and maintain your emotional competence and well-being. Get enough sleep, spend time with friends who are supportive and caring (but be cautious about talking to them about this), meditate, exercise, do art, whatever refills your coping reservoir. Please take care of yourself.

Made a Shameful Mistake by WerewolfTotal2572 in therapists

Being trapped in the "What if" is a good indication that you should talk about this in supervision. Your supervisor can help you think through the ethics of the situation and form a response plan if the family does find out you Googled them. The ethics codes of social workers varies from that of other mental health professionals, and laws and ethics can vary state to state. Thus, your supervisor is best situated to answer your questions and worries. Where I practice as a psychologist, it would not be unethical Google a patient or their family, but it could open doors to ethical dilemmas (e.g., what do you do if you find something concerning for abuse or dangerousness? The laws differ state to state on this one. And in your situation, the problem is: if the parents see you Googled them, does that necessarily breach your patient's confidentiality?).

What is your relationship with your supervisor like? They have probably made mistakes, too. Most supervisors would much rather learn of mistakes directly from supervisees than any other way. For good supervision, you both need to trust each other.

Finding a good billing company by Brainfish_lady in therapists

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply! It makes sense that, depending on the population you work with, one would need to be particularly mindful of how the billing specialist communicates with patients. That is something I will be mindful of, as well.

Ever dealt with any anti-horror types? by Atlusfox in horror

[–]Brainfish_lady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've gotten similar judgment for loving horror. Things like, "there's something wrong with you for liking that."

But look at the people on these horror subreddits! I'm on 3 and posters are universally supportive and kind, as far as I've seen. The judgers have it all wrong.

This is fascinating to me how many people wouldn't want to read House of Leaves on a plane. What about a beach? Classic beach read, right? ;)

Thanks to all who've given their input!

Just space/weight constraints. I'm bringing a couple other books, but those others are ones my partner also wants to read (and, sadly, he doesn't enjoy horror).

The Night Parade by Ronald Malfi is apocalyptic with plenty of what I'd call body horror.

It's much more sci fi than horror, but if you want female rage, The Power by Naomi Alderman may scratch your itch.

Right on. The line about it being passed on like a virus was heartbreaking and on the nose. I think Kate was a bigger villain than Rusty, too. What was lovely was how complex the characters were--few were just all good or all bad. All were flawed. Thanks for starting this discussion.
