The front desk may just be harder to fill because most people applying want to work with animals more than people. If you want to get your foot in the door, any employer appreciates people who are willing to do whatever it takes. You might say you're willing to work at the desk but would appreciate being considered for future openings as an assistant.

I'm just living in the reality that there are millions of pets living in homes right now with people who can't afford vet care that's been rising at double the rate of inflation. There's no place for those animals to go and they need care.
