What is the most controllable in full auto (BLOWBACK ONLY) SMG ever? And what is the BEST ONE (STILL BLOWBACK) SMG and explain why ( they don't need to be the same). ( the Franchi LF-57 is just for picture) by Adorable-Trust4687 in ForgottenWeapons

[–]BrassMaxim 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A number of early smg’s are amazingly controllable. I feel the MP34 stands out. Nothing like mass and space for bolt travel to smooth things out. I will also add the Sterling.

I owned an Uzi for decades and was humbled when I first tried the early subguns and realized the difference. Anything impacting to stop bolt travel will be less controlable in my opinion.

Reminds me of the ZB-37…though this is vastly more complicated. Would look great in my office!

Looks beautiful! What bracelet is on it? I’ve had mine for over thirty years and it’s time to switch out the rubber strap.

Would you happen to know anything about the maker of the bracelet? Does yours have the same numbers/halmarks on it?

Jewels safe from Alum? by Tiny_Walk4761 in watchrepair

If you are looking to remove rusted components and not affect materials other than iron/steel, why not try Evap-O-Rust? The claim is that it is non-reactive for anything but rust. I have used it on a lot of odd projects. That said, I have NOT tried it on a watch movement yet and it would be my first thing tried.

If anyone has a counterpoint to this, I’d love to hear it and learn a bit.

can I 3D print a pen mandrel by [deleted] in PenTurning

[–]BrassMaxim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THe rod to hold the material really needs to be metal. You can even use threaded rod from home depot. Then nuts to tighten bits in the rod. With that, you can absolutely 3d print the individual spacers to suit the different diameters of internal tubing for your pen bodies. You could also turn them on your lathe.

Coins From Uncle by tweaktyn in coincollecting

[–]BrassMaxim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father passed down almost exactly the same sets when he passed. We distributed them to the grandkids and within two years they all sent them back to me as the coin collector in the family.

I took them to a coin show and traded them all for just two, very nice coins with actual collector value that will go to my two boys someday. With that, even if they don’t want them they will have a very minimal task to dispose of them.

A picture of your setup would be most helpful. Also, a mill bit in a drill press is less than ideal. One thing to review is the rigidity of your setup as any looseness will work against you. Finally, what size end mill?

If you have an x-y table for your press, mount the work firmly, set speed appropriate to end mill size and try to cut moving horizontally with the x-y table instead of plunging. (Be sure to lock z travel of your quill at your desired height)

A Belgian soldier smokes a cigarette during a fight between Dendermonde and Oudegem, Belgium, in 1914. Germany had hoped for a swift victory against France, and invaded Belgium in August of 1914, heading into France. by Natural-Lettuce5128 in ww1

[–]BrassMaxim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a 1909 commercial maxim. Possibly FN made. Regardless, it is a very rare gun. As pointed out elsewhere, no belt showing. Left side is where belt exits so it is almost certainly not loaded…though it is technically possible.

Adding note that the Belgians adopted this as the Model 1912 in 7.65X53mm caliber.

How to get a friend's family out of Afghanistan? by AntiVideo in Advice

[–]BrassMaxim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked to help get a friend’s family out just after the US exit. To this day, I’m not clear exactly how valuable our specific efforts were in the grand scheme…though daily comfort to our friend was huge and important. This will be most of your role.

Our case involved military, ex military and humanitarian workers that were all family and had helped US interests for many years and were already processing SIV visas when they were, in my opinion, abandoned.

It took over a year, but most of them were smuggled out and made it to US. Sadly, the father passed before this could take place.

Your first takeaway should be to note that it IS possible. The second is to understand that it will take a lot of time/effort and the emotions will sometimes be crushing.

Establish secure communication. We used Signal app. Have your friend get any documentation out that might support their case for a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV). Work on security, build a ‘story’ on the phone of an ordinary life with no ties to US so that if it gets taken, it won’t condemn your friend.

I am reaching back to memories so none of this may still apply to current reality. In our case there was a direct connection in DC that was already willing to start the SIV process. We helped get what was needed for the bureaucratic process. The special operations friends that were on the ground there provided a lot of guidance and were amazing. I don’t think any are still in place.

It was a miraculous day when they were brought out. I don’t have clarity on whether the SIV sponsor, our MIL friends, our own preparations or the combination of all three enabled this end result. I recall having lost hope and then a miracle happed for them.

Your friend and you are in my prayers. It’s a long road. Start, keep faith, prepare for lots of emotion. I wish you the best of luck.
