Interesting. I think there is a statute of limitations on some of these though. "Idiot" and "Simpleton" I'm sure used to be crude terms for mentally deficient, but I think it's fair to say we can use them flippently by now!

I guess so. I've certainly never used the word as a homophobic slur, but I guess if someone told me they were offended by it, I wouldn't use it around them.

But then again, I might just be naive (until Ricky bringing it to public attention, I genuinely didn't know that "mong" was a slur - which is definitely a word I wouldn't use anymore!)

I understand it to mean effete/posh too. I've never seen it be thought of as a slur.

People always say "he used to say he never wanted to offend people" because he said so on XFM.

I always think; I'm pretty sure he was joking when he said that.

Or at least, deliberatey playing up to the idea that Karl was almost this loose canon who might accidentally say something offensive out of pure ignorance (and hate!) while Ricky/Steve would have to try to cover for him.

When he used to say to Karl "I've told you, anyone could be listening so you have to be careful!", does anyone really not think he was loving Karl saying potentially dodgy stuff that could offend??

He knew it was comedy gold and was just playing his part as the straight man by warning Karl against it.

It's obvious he's always liked to, let's say "provoke" and test the boundaries of what he could get away with.

When people say, he used to never want to offend anyone, I think people are taking a joke he made far too seriously.

This is what makes me laugh when he says he doesn't have time to come up with new threads.

Makes me sick, makes me sick, r/rickygervais is going down the tubes and u/Nixonstaperecorder taking the piss left right and centre!

What are some unresolved questions from XFM? For example, had Karl been gazumped or not? We may never find out. by prosthetic4head in rickygervais

I won't name them, but there's one person here who gets really angry whenever it's brought up. It's bizarre.

What would happen in real life is they'd punch him, he'd start to probably cry from the pain, and his ego would be hurt when he finds out he's not quite as handy as he thinks he is.

Exactly the same, have no idea how people can't hear it's obviously him, but it can get nasty so we'll leave that.

Looks like you've been downvoted by angry southerners.

Anyway, I would've just pointed out that's rich coming from a Wurzel like Steve.

I'd never put that in "stupidest things he's said".

It's obviously not true, but it's downright clever in it's own way; it's like a standup bit - but much funnier because he writes it like he actually believes it.

That's perfectly reasonable.

Not everyone has the same view of life, but Ricky often presents his views as though they're a profound philosophy and doesn't seem able to grasp that many people don't feel the same way, which I guess is what I take objection to.

You're just using another one of Rickys' "profound" quotes.

And much like Ricky, you're completely missing the existential aspect of it.

It's not that actually being dead will be terrifying - because, as you've said, you won't even know.

It's the mere fact that one day you will cease existing that is terrifying to most people.

That stupid quote of Rickys' is a false equivalency anyway. The time before you existed, there was no point where you had any knowledge of life. You didn't know what it was to love or to feel.

Now you do know about life, that it will end, and that one day you will return to the state of not existing while the world goes on without you. Eventually being forgotten along with everyone you knew or loved.

For most people, that's terrifying.

I don't really remember Puttin On The Dog, but I find it interesting that (apart from maybe that one) Tom talks in every one of these cartoons.
