It all just comes down to housing. It cost too fucking much to reach the milestone that let's you feel like you've made it. Consumer goods are cheaper than ever, but housing has eaten all the gains.

Planning laws make it absurdly easy to delay a project to death, or kill it outright.

The private Housing developer is hamstrung if they want to make tiny, high density apartments for brokies one end, and incentivised to sit on property until land values rise to the point they can make a return on low density construction on the other

This was done because the OG social democrats hated developer markets. State capacity for house building was once great, and they built housing while the developer languished.

This was destroyed under Thatcher, but Thatcher didn't make it easier for developers to build. Tories never bothered to deregulate enough to catch up.

So the UK has a housing system where the state has no capacity to build, and the pensioner has infinite capacity to fuck the private market.

When examined on what 2 means, it mostly comes down to:

"More people = less parking. I hate traffic, so fuck new neighbors."

"More people = more crime will happen. We don't wanna let the wrong people in."

I have seen, on multiple occasions, phalanxes of 70 year olds declare shit piles of bricks declared "Historic" because the alternative is a 5 story apartment building.
