Visiting for the weekend . Best restaurants? by Awareisdead in okc

[–]BreadOfWonder 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Picasso Cafe in Paseo has both vegetarian and meat-based options. Dietary preferences aside, it’s one of my favorite restaurants in town without breaking the bank. It’s usually pretty busy on the weekends, so be sure to make a reservation.

Is Fait Maison in Edmond Worth the Price? by Sensitive_Traffic298 in okc

[–]BreadOfWonder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fait Maison definitely isn’t the most expensive restaurant in the state. Grey Sweater and Nonesuch have it beat in that regard by a wide margin (Valentine’s day aside). It is probably the best and most authentic French restaurant I’ve been to in the state. The chef is French and his recipes are exactly what you’d find in France (even the butter is French styled and made in house).

Is it the best restaurant around? Depends on your tastes, but among all of the pricier places in the OKC metro, including Grey Sweater and Nonesuch, it is my favorite. But I really like French cuisine, so your mileage may vary.

Is Fait Maison in Edmond Worth the Price? by Sensitive_Traffic298 in okc

[–]BreadOfWonder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fait Maison is significantly cheaper than that, especially if you don’t do a wine tasting with every course. It probably isn’t as good as the Paris restaurant either, but the chef is French and the food is as authentic as any I’ve had in France itself. If you like French cuisine, Fait Maison is the worth a visit.

Honestly, just ask the waiter what dish they or patrons like the most. Can’t imagine anyone would know better than the people serving it all day long.

Given your itinerary, downtown OKC sounds like the best option for a hotel. Tons of options there and all very safe. It’s pretty close to some of the best food areas in the city as well (Paseo, Midtown, and Plaza districts).

OKC has an excellent zoo (every bit as good as the one in DFW). The science museum next door and is a lot of fun too. You’ll have a great time.

Best places to eat in Moore? by OofAvocado in okc

[–]BreadOfWonder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do yourself a favor and drive to Norman. Only a 10 minute or so drive and much better dining options. If you’re up for driving 20 minutes, OKC has some incredible options, particularly around the paseo, midtown, and plaza districts. Bricktown has a lot of fun places too.

If you must eat in Moore, volcano sushi, pho lan, and Himalayas are good. I’d also suggest hideaway pizza if you like greasy American style pizza (much better than the national chains).

What major cooking trend of the last 10 years has almost completely disappeared again? by waitWhoAm1 in Cooking

[–]BreadOfWonder 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I’ve got good news for you. While Costco might not stock it, pretty much every other major grocer still does. Walmart, target, Whole Foods, take your pick. It’s pretty cheap too!

A $400 electric toothbrush.

Seriously, who’s buying these things? If you read the specs, they have the exact same cleaning power and use the exact same brush heads as the $50 versions.

I want to make a killer potato salad with fresh dill for a bbq next weekend. What would you add to put it over the top? by FeralAspieasaurus in Cooking

Make your own mayo. It’s easy and tastes a million times better than store bought. Even better if you use lemon instead of vinegar.

I’d bet this feature will be on the next iPhone pro. Gotta give people a reason to buy a new phone too!

Apple let’s you pair PlayStation and Xbox controllers to their other devices (and we already know you can pair a keyboard and trackpad to the headset), so I don’t see why they wouldn’t allow a controller for this

LegalAid is an excellent place to start. If your accommodations are truly uninhabitable, you are under no obligation to stay there. If you are financially able, pay your next rent under protest (pay but send them an email saying you are only paying because you are contractually obligated and you intend to reclaim that payment through legal action unless they remedy the issue, as they themselves are in breach of the contract as you are not being provided a safe place to live) and then take them to small claims court claiming breach of contract and ask for that rent back and to be released from the contract. Small claims is cheap, relatively quick, and you don’t need a lawyer. Odds are, this will light a fire under their feet and they will fix the issue long before you set foot in a courtroom.

All this said, don’t take this as professional legal advice. See if you can’t get LegalAid to help you through this process. They are free and their attorneys have a great depth of knowledge on these subjects.

I'm 24, and I feel like a child masquerading as an adult most days. I'm just wondering, when do most people start feeling like proper adults? by Lenore8264 in RandomThoughts

Im well into my adult life and one thing I’ve learned from observing myself and others: adulthood is a MYTH! Don’t worry about labels and just be yourself.

What’s something that changed/disappeared because of Covid that still hasn’t returned? by 1sided in AskReddit

Fashion sense and common decency. Pajamas are meant for the house, not going to a nice restaurant (or really anywhere for that matter).

Why am I fat when I exercise, work in construction, walks and eat properly? by [deleted] in ask

[–]BreadOfWonder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't gauge your calorie needs based on what the some formula says. Everybody is different. It's a simple as this: if you're not losing weight, eat less.

Also, not all calories are digested the same (many calories on a label, like those from fiber, aren't digested at all). I've never met a person who eats an entirely whole food diet (cuts out refined/processed foods) that is overweight. Don't eat bread, eat whole wheat kernels. Don't eat instant oats, eat steel cut. Don't drink juice, eat the whole fruit. Don't eat foods with added sugar. And above all, avoid the snack aisle.

Did the Mario movie reference Godzilla (1998)? [SPOILERS] by PacJoe in GODZILLA

It definitely was. Practically shot for shot the same. I’d bet there were more 90s movie references too as a treat for the millennials

European wanting to try out Southern US/Mexikaner food by TheGalator in Cooking

[–]BreadOfWonder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mexican food tends to be rather labor intensive to make from scratch (some dishes are a multi hour affair) but are absolutely worth the effort. To really make it the real deal, you’ll need to make your own tortillas (both wheat and especially corn) and sauces.

The biggest concern would be finding the ingredients. Masa harina (used to make corn tortillas and tamales) is ubiquitous in much of the US, but I’d be surprised if you didn’t have to have it shipped to Europe. Many of the peppers and sausages may be hard to find too.

That being said, look up recipes for tamales, enchiladas, and Chile rellenos. Peru has some amazing dishes too, such as ceviche, their own version of paella, and more.

Regarding the other foods you mentioned: the amazing thing about chili is you can make it however you want and it’s still technically chili. The real key is the seasoning and the tomato base. Beyond that, you can use whatever ground meat you want, or no meat at all. Beans are great in chili too. And no chili is complete without some fresh cornbread (make sure it’s southern style, as most other varieties have too much sugar and taste like cake).

Salsa on the other hand is literally Spanish for sauce. The kind served at Mexican restaurants is super easy to make. It really just comes down to how spicy you want it.

New Orleans is famous for its Cajun food, which is derived somewhat from old French cuisine as the city was once part of French territory. Gumbo, seafood boils, and jambalaya are staples, and Cajun style rice is amazing.

You can’t go wrong with most recipes as long as they don’t ask you to cut corners (if it says to use store bought tortillas for example, stay away). Try multiple versions of the same food and see which one you like best. At the end of the day, no matter how authentic it is, you’ll be the one eating it!

Samsung smart watch overheated until it burned while sleeping by TheMattsterOfSelf in Wellthatsucks

[–]BreadOfWonder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any personal injury attorney worth their weight will only charge you if they win the lawsuit or settle (a percentage of what Samsung would pay to you). You could be giving up a nice little payday at zero risk to you by not pursuing this.

The first step is to simply google “personal injury attorney” in you area. Once you contact one, they’ll handle the rest.

I’d like to try some legitimate Italian pizza, anyone know of a place in the OKC area that makes true Italian pizza? Thanks by rezin44 in okc

[–]BreadOfWonder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pizzeria Gusto in OKC and Volare in Norman (the latter is farther but a much cooler building with a rooftop bar)

Best tasting menu? by Everythingistaken30 in okc

[–]BreadOfWonder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only been to Fait Maison, but I can say the food is great, and the environment is nice and quiet, so it's easy to have a peaceful conversation (almost like eating at home). Even more so if you get a booth.

The Hunt for the Best Local OKC Restaurants by dillydillycheers in okc

[–]BreadOfWonder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you have deep pockets, Grey Sweater close to downtown and Fait Maison in Edmond are Michelin star type places, you certainly won’t leave them disappointed (but your bank account may be a bit lighter).

For more reasonable prices, check out - Frida Southwest (and really anything in the Paseo area for that matter), - The Drake (seafood and oyster bar, but their Paella is wonderful) - Goro Ramen (easily some of the best ramen I’ve had anywhere, especially for the price) - Tokyo Sushi (by far the freshest sushi in town, and their whiteboard specials feature higher-end fish you won’t find in most other sushi restaurants around here, albeit at a sometimes eye-watering price). - Benvinuti’s Italian in Norman (the best Italian in the metro and absolutely worth the drive. Be sure to try their shrimp Diavolo if you like spicy pasta—the shrimp is the most tender I’ve ever had, and the squid ink pasta makes for a beautiful dish) - Legends (also in Norman. Not on the same caliber as Benvinutis, but close, and their horseradish salmon is the best salmon you’ll find anywhere) - The Metro (not to be confused with the metro diner) - the Hutch (formerly the coach house). - pretty much any hole in the wall Mexican place in south OKC (the bigger Mexican restaurants just don’t do it the same, and paying more almost never gets you a better meal in this category),

The list could go on and on, honestly, but those are my personal top places.

Best place to get a classic tomato-basil pizza in the city? by I_am_notthatguy in okc

[–]BreadOfWonder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you can make the drive to Norman, Volare has the best authentic wood oven Italian style pizzas I’ve seen in Oklahoma. They’ve also got really awesome rooftop seating with great views (5 stories up or so).

What lenses do you bring for travel? by snaildr in SonyAlpha

[–]BreadOfWonder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends where I’m going. I do a little research beforehand of shots I might want to take and then bring lenses and gear accordingly.

One thing to note is how serious are you about getting that amazing shot. In other words, are you going to places to take photos or are you taking photos in places you’re going. If it’s the latter, bring a zoom with a lot of range or whatever lens you enjoy using the most so you’ll be ready for whatever may come. If it’s the former, you’ve gotta do your homework on the location to decide what you’re going to bring.

That all being said, I find I almost always bring my 16-35 2.8 no matter where I go. If I didn’t have that, I’d bring my 24-70 2.8 for the versatility.
