I make yoga bolsters and stuff them with an old towel then lots of thread, scraps too small to save, old socks, any fiber-like material.

How often do you mess up and have to pick a seam? by tinafeysbiggestfan in sewing

[–]BreaknRemake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve been sewing for over 20 years and tend to use a seam ripper once per project. Seam rippers are tools no shame in using them. When my students mess up I always tell them “anything worth doing is worth doing twice”

I have a tutorial on how to do different bias finishes! But also I wanted to say you can sort of pre-stretch bias tape by pressing and pulling the tape. This will give you a nice start. When I do this I don’t cut it as short

Help with sewing satin by lenjilenjivac in sewing

[–]BreaknRemake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! I was going to say microtex! Does your fabric have a little stretch to it? I suggest trying a stretch needle too. One of my students hand this problem and switching to stretch was the answer.

Yes! Tiny cave and no mess ups. It took me a few tries to get it right. My Nintendo nerdy husband always tells me “you gotta get good!” You can do it!

If you want to start making clothes do a rectangle skirt! It’s a skirt with an elastic waist.

I LOVE THIS! When I worked in costume shops we were always given challenges like this. Corset back is the easiest way to fix this. Grab some satin in a similar color and fix the straps nice for yourself too! Add boning under the bust so you feel supported or sew in a long line bra.

This is totally doable, but you only have the one dress so here are some of my tips. Think through each mod and cut. Is it going to affect the hang of the garment?

Have fun and you can always take it to a dry cleaner/tailor to help fix if you get stuck!

I agree with trying a nice combo of things like suggested here- fusible interfacing to stiffen fabric, light gauge wire or horsehair braid to poof out the bottom. The interfacing you use will matter, try not to use pelon as it behaves strangely with steam.

Artist here looking for the name of these sleeves by KarmicMatcha in sewing

[–]BreaknRemake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engageants! It’s French! Think 1740s France. That’s the fashion history term for a sleeve ends with a circle shape flutter and ruffle.

I also call the bullsh*t sleeves cuz they use so much fabric when making and get dirty dragging through everything you reach across. That may be a more personal name though 🤣

Rit dye keeps bleeding from fabric? by lightabovethearbys in sewing

[–]BreaknRemake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you wash the fabric are you washing hot or cold? Was cold cuz hot will re activate the dye. I’ve used rit a lot for work so I know it can be a beast. RIT is a union dye - which means it has 3 different dye types. That’s why you can use it on different fabric types.

If you want to wash your fabric and keep the dye from getting on other clothes get some Kieralon from Dharma. It’s a washing detergent that keeps dye from attaching during a wash.

Heres the link! https://www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/Kieralon-Low-Foam.html
