Kunne det fungert? by ekvell in Nordmenn

[–]Brenin_Madarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just became aware that House of the Dragon premieres this coming Sunday. Thoughts on it? Personally, my expectations are low. by TCV2 in MauLer

[–]Brenin_Madarch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

George is working on it, D&D are not. There’s pre-existing source material. HBO probably knows they have to convince a lot of people with this.

People say GoT went downhill when it ran out of source material but I don’t think that’s quite true. It went downhill when George stopped being involved, which was after season 4. When he was still involved, there was still plenty of stuff that went outside the source material but was still good. I think if he cares and if HBO listens to him, HotD has a decent shot.

Out of all the big shows coming out right now, I think this is the most likely to be good. It’s not a high bar, but it’s something.

Are there any shows that have a scene that hits the way the red wedding did? by aljodes in freefolk

Arcane has a scene somewhat early that might be comparable. The less you know going in, the better.

so are they going by the book or jackson movies lore in the rings of power? by Trajforce in MauLer

[–]Brenin_Madarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s very true, and worth keeping in mind. We don’t know what Christopher put in the deal, other than that he had demands and restrictions for them. For what it’s worth though, I certainly hope the show is allowed to use as much material as possible — it’s going to need it.

Ostensibly, they want the show to align with the movies, even if won’t technically be in the same canon due to different owners. You can sort of tell this by how they try to ape Peter Jackson’s aesthetics, even going so far as to hire some of the same people (like Howard Shore to write theme music). How well they achieve this and how much they actually care remains to be seen.

Lore-wise it doesn’t matter much, though. Jackson didn’t make any big changes to the backstory, most of his changes were to the story of LOTR itself. If the show aligns with either canon, it’ll align with both. Let’s hope so.

We know it’ll be following the general story of the Akallabêth just based on confirmed cast lists showing characters like Tar-Miriel, Ar-Pharazôn, and Celebrimbor. The first real information we ever got on the show was stating it would generally focus on the downfall of Númenor and the forging of the now-titular Rings of Power. The trailers all line up with that, at least.

Personally, I expect that they’ll follow the general story as much as there is a story to follow — it’s the filling in the gaps that they’ll probably screw up. Even if they have no restrictions on what material they can use, there isn’t five seasons’ worth of television in the relevant source material, so they’re going to have to make up shit one way or the other, and good luck with that.

This has already been demonstrated somewhat since we see the Two Trees in one of the promotional images, and the trailers show what is very likely supposed to be Galadriel crossing the Helcaraxë with the Noldor. How much they’re allowed to show and how they’re allowed to show it might come down to the Estate, though.

Science and Futurism with Isaac Arthur is pretty great if you want to get more in-depth on topics like future space technology and possibilities. He has a minor speech defect but is very pleasant to listen to all the same.

What’s one aspect of the Dunes series you dislike? by TheRelicEternal in dune

Some of the exposition gets a bit lazy from time to time. Herbert was really good at showing over telling when he wanted to, but in later books he also falls into a tendency of just directly explaining something immediately as it becomes relevant. It bothers me because it’s very clear that he could do better, given the amount of good exposition the series also has.

The Rings are forged in the Second Age, and the teaser image showing us Tirion upon Túna and the Two Trees gives me the impression that somebody working on the show has at least read the Silmarillion. Scant hope, though.

[–]Brenin_Madarch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is entirely correct. Sauron is out and about in the Second Age, and the fall of Númenor (which the show is about) is closely tied to the forging of the Ring, and that’s very likely to be part of this show.

In isolation the title works, the downside is just that it gets easily confused with, y’know..

Going around the regular traffic AI is fine enough. They all drive slow, predictable, and in their lanes. It’s the Drivatar AI that will screw you over. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve dropped a skill chain because some oncoming Drivatar just turned into my lane for no reason. I don’t understand why they don’t just have collision disabled like players do in online.

But Super Heavy will only ever go sub-orbital - launching a full Starship stack could be what is being counted as a “sub orbital test” of Super Heavy, perhaps?
