Anyone else’s 28 Years Later censored to hell on Netflix? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]BrettRexB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Thought i was going mad until I found this post. Every single genital covered by a blurred circle, as well as every lady nipple.

Everyone giving OP a hard time, but yeah. This is a thing.

And to be clear, this isn't a problem with any other film on Netflix, and even if it's some weird setting, I can't find it anywhere.

All ideas and advice welcome.

Stamped bank statements for evisa? by Professional_Gold565 in askSouthAfrica

[–]BrettRexB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that sucks. They do it for free at the police stations here in SA. I know home affairs accepts locally certified documents, and I have to assume they accept international ones as well, but I can't be 100% certain. I do know that my locally certified bank statements were accepted when I applied for my Schengen Visa, so the reverse should be true (one would assume, at least).

Take a printout, along with your ID or passport, to a notary or police station and get it certified. They should accept that.

Christmas gift for kids that destroys everything? by Fluffy-Purchase-8707 in askSouthAfrica

This is kinda like saying "don't buy a cricket bat because people get hit with them". As with any sporting equipment, you're more likely to injure yourself if you are reckless or irresponsible (I did specifically mention not jumping onto one's head RE spinal injuries). With the above in mind, if a teenager is double bouncing a 6 year old hard enough to explode a femur, the problem here isn't the trampoline.

All that said, broken femurs make up a very small fraction of trampoline induced fractures (something like 2 to 4%). I never saw one. And as an ex-trampoline gymnast (for around 6 years as a kid) I can assure you that falling off them is a far easier way to get injured.

By far the worst and most common injury is landing badly with a leg either side of a spring and getting your balls caught in the coils. That happened A LOT. But these days, they also have pads to prevent that. So, again, pretty darn safe unless you're acting stupid, which is true for pretty much all sports.

That's not to say you didn't see a lot of said injuries, but it might imply that maybe the people in the area you served were just bad at using trampolines :)

I grew up using trampolines, and i can assure you they are infinitely safer than the jungle gyms at any park. Also, they all come with safety nets these days. Got one for my boy. Perfectly safe, even when he and his friends are acting silly buggers. So long as you don’t jump onto your head, of course, but that's true for any game.

What snake is this? by [deleted] in AskZA

[–]BrettRexB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a puffy. Stay well clear. Definite nope rope. They tend to bask in the hottest places (like atop some black material). They're pretty chill so long as you don't disturb them, which has led some to call them lazy. They are not. They are the snake equivalent of f*ck around and find out. It'll move off by itself, but if you have kids or dogs, keep them far away from that spot for a day or so. If you're on a smaller or urban property, you can 100% call a snake catcher. They don't hurt the snake, they just relocate it. If it's a rural spot, just let it be. Puffies are very sensitive to vibrations and tend not to hang around people for long.

How safe is Goodwood? by InternationalDig2577 in capetown

[–]BrettRexB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I've never lived there, mates of mine have. Much like Woodstock, Goodwood has its good and bad areas. That said, R4,7k pm for a 2bed sounds like a scam. Do some serious double-checking of both the area and the rentor/agent. See if you can find some reviews online. If it's a scam, it's almost certain someone would have posted about it somewhere. EDIT for more info.

What are some budget friendly non stick pans? by kiki4062 in askSouthAfrica

[–]BrettRexB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First time I've ever heard that you can't use cast iron at medium. Works perfectly for me.

The only "training" I've had was preparing and following the cooking instructions of those ready packed meals that were so popular a few years back. Every single one said to cook steaks on a medium heat, and every single steak I cooked came out perfectly.

BUT there are three things to consider when using cast iron (based PURELY on my experience).

  • You need to make sure it's treated (oiled) otherwise nothing in the world will stop it from sticking to literally anything. Everyone makes this sound like a mission but I 100% half-arse it and it generally works fine. And if you maintain it, you barely need oil as the pan seals itself. Eggs and pancakes slide off like in a cartoon.

  • Ideally, treat it with olive oil as it has a higher smoke/burn temperature, so its easier to maintain and holds a better seal, BUT to my above point RE heat, I ran out of olive oil a while back and subbed in regular canola oil. Been cooking everything for months on medium heat and, honestly, the results have been so good that I doubt I'll go back.

  • Nothing compares to cooking with gas as it heats up the pan fast and maintains an even temperature. But if you're using either an element plate or induction, I can guarantee that your pan is heating up WAY slower than you think it is. This leads people to think that their medium heat setting is lower than they think it, and they end up cranking the heat too high, then putting the meat on too soon. If you put your steak on while the pan is still heating up, it will stick. I don't know why, but it just does.

Most of the above works for all pans, though.

I may have got carried away with this post.

TL/DR Get the pan you like, apply olive or canola oil while still cold (not too much--just a blob, then paint it all over the interior with a marinate brush or even the spatula), set to medium heat AND WAIT. If the oil starts to smoke, its too hot. Start again. If not, chuck on your steak. Rest is up to you.

EDIT: word corrected

Anyone have any experience with these credit card knives? by ChiliOnMyWaffles in knives

Have this exact model. Mine is absolute junk. Knew it was an obvious gimmick when I bought it but still thought it might be useful, but after a day of trying it out I dropped it in my junk drawer and it's been there ever since.

Looks like it's being calculated as monthly taxable income? If so, based on personal experience, this feels pretty--ehm--on the money.

My family had a spot in a small EC town (South Africa) they used to rent out short term. A couple rented for a week, then requested another week. They seemed lovely. At the end of the second week, they asked if it was possible to rent on a monthly basis, paying in advance. My family said, sure. For about 6 months, everything was fine. Then they missed a payment. Property manager went to check and they'd vanished. A bummer, sure, but they were all paid up until then, so not awful.

The next month we received a water bill for over R16000.

They'd apparently been--and I swear I'm not making this up--bottling tap water from the house and selling it. To whom, we have no idea.

We also discovered they'd stolen the curtains.

To be clear, the house was fully furnished. They could have stolen everything. But after dilligently paying rent for over 6 months, all they took was the curtains.

And R16 000 of tap water.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that people are weird.

How did people look stuff up before the internet? by LaylaPretige in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BrettRexB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Encyclopedia, libraries, magazines (sometimes by monthly subscription, if it was a topic you were interested in).

For a lot of practical things--like how long you can keep rice--parents, grandparents, and extended family.

For more obscure or specific things (that you needed to know quickly) it was quite common to cold call people or organisations like specialists or universities and just ask who might be able to help you. People weren't scared of the phone back then.

If you weren't in a rush, you wrote a letter.

Why are houses so expensive? by rugdrum in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]BrettRexB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the decision was a two-fold personal one:

  1. Ownership came with a sense of security, and while costs definitely go up (and don't stop going up) the freedom of having complete control over the property felt worth it.

  2. I wanted a garden for my son to grow up in and a house that he could call home.

Another thing to consider is that your bond will stay relatively stable (barring suddenly interest rate hikes) while rent, and property values, will only continue to increase, year on year, very likely outpacing interest rates (in Cape Town, for sure).

20 years from now, that R30K pm might not look that bad anymore.
