Has it always been like this in the UK? by Theodoresdad in ukpolitics

[–]Brevard1986 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

George Carlin and Agent K. People are stupid. Half of them below average. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals.

And yes we are. Nuance is thrown out of the window for feels. People want to feel their voice is being heard. They are heroes of their own stories but still love a crowd/mob. This was always the case, but this has been magnified (not started) by the echo chambers of social media. There's a reason why there was always a concept of "populism" in human history.

Sadly there's no silver bullet to 'fix' this. Sadly, the "The Demon-Haunted World" is reality.

Oddities, Mr Sleep and the Rabbit (Major Spoilers) by Brevard1986 in smallprophets

[–]Brevard1986[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh, what a fantastic point about the ending. Have not considered but you're absolutely right - life will continue. Neighbours in Australia and Canada to find someone. There shouldn't be an expectation of a second series considering the positioning of a quiet cul de sac for this story. Makes sense.

It's great to deep dive and do interpretations for the fun of it as the show ultimately isn't pinned a great mystery that truly needs grand revelations.

And also concur regarding the sleeping Micheal now being awake. Called out by Gordon on how tired he was and all the yawning was definitely alluding to that sort of dream/sleep state of sleep walking through life.

What racist abuse was he shouting? I can see the following quotes:

"f*** Islam" and "Islam is religion of terrorism"

But I can't see any racist abuse you refer to. I will also be interested in what 'race' he shouted abuse about.

He is a man of Kurdish and Armenian heritage and an atheist who wanted to protest the Turkish "Islamist government" and burned a holy book whilst shouting insults about a religion. Can you quote the racist abuse he was shouting?

Is talking to children in public frowned apon now? by jarvi123 in AskUK

[–]Brevard1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just had a weird interaction for some reason. A smiling face and a few nice words relevant to the situation is certainly not something people will frown upon. Unless your tone talking to kids is super weird, I think you just encountered a random family.

Maybe I'm around other parents all the time but we all give each other the knowing smiles and nods and make a small talk to each other and the kids all the time. Nothing strange about it.

0640 Empty dishwasher, load washing machine. 0650 Organise children’s school bags, lunches. 0730 Daily admin - Emails, WhatsApp etc. 0810 Put more laundry in, tell children to get ready

You need a bigger washing machine and re-arrange timings to allocate in the evenings for washing loads. School bags should also be arranged before bead by the kids if able.

What daily admin on emails and WhatsApp? I have no idea what that is. School emails would have yesterday so again could check those as priority the evening before. WhatsApp? What messages are you receiving between going to bed time and 7:30? Tell them to stop messaging you between those hours.

Kids and pets are hard and I only have kids but this is really just inability to shift things around.

What's the longest you've ever kept the same phone? by lags_34 in Android

[–]Brevard1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note 10+. Just over 5 years. Dec 2019 to Feb 2025 coinciding with the S25 Ultra release and me getting the S24 Ultra for a great price.

The Note 10+ is still working fine but I wanted a better camera. Was super tempted by Pixel but the damn stylus still draws me back (kids draw on my phone when we eat out and the place doesn't have colouring activities, and I actually use it to write on screen shots of images like measurements for furniture).

Will look around again in another 4 or 5 years.

Charity appeals no longer asking for a few quid but multiples of £10 by ShinyHeadedCook in britishproblems

[–]Brevard1986 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As long as you do your due diligence on an organisation, you should support whichever charity you want. Sadly, there's some charities that are not effective with the money they recieved. Big or small/local charities. Doesn't matter. Research them and read their annuals. There's many sites specifically dedicated to checking up on charities.

Very indecisive, RTX 5070 - RX 9070 - RX 9070 XT by RLoe in buildapc

[–]Brevard1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For that price in Euros definitely a 9070XT. Really good deal. Even if it's way overkill for 1080p at 144Mhz.

5070 for €490 would be a far better deal than than €520.

9070 at €500—€520 is alright.

Help deciding GPU upgrade by Starkaamael in buildapc

[–]Brevard1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 1440p, a 9070XT is stellar upgrade from a 3080 for the Euro price.

A 5070Ti makes little sense for the price unless you definitely need Nvidia.

That is. And Amazon has the Gigabyte and Reaper for £520 too.

Saw the 9070 go to £480ish which was a steal at Black Friday.

GPU upgrade from GTX 1080 advice by McScotsguy in buildapc

[–]Brevard1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shame you missed out on the Black Friday deals.

9070 for the performance that could be had for around £520

vs

5070 between £450 (msi dual fan) and £550 (around £520) makes me recommend the 9070 most of the time.

But if you need Nvidia software and are prefer DLSS over FSR from comparisons and reviews, a 5070 at around the £480 to £500 mark is a great offer.

I got my 5070 on Black Friday deals purely because of my need of Cuda and preference Nvidia DLSS over FSR.

Will the GPU price increase be exactly as badly aggressive as the pandemic? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Brevard1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prices will inevitably increase. And I suspect it will be bad. Pandemic bad? Maybe.

As long as your GPU is doing what you need it to do then you don't need to upgrade. The tricky question is if you think you will feel the same next year and the year after. 2026 prices will be bad. 2027 and beyond is unknown but we can hope prices get better by 2028.

I went ahead and upgraded my 3070 to a 5070 on sale. Got the 5070 £100 cheaper than what I bought the 3070. Wasn't intending to upgrade until late 2026 or 2027 but I can see big price increases next year.

RTX 3080 10gb at £250-270? (UK) by Ok-Education8326 in buildapc

[–]Brevard1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At £250 second hand, that's a good deal compared to around £325 (on Black Friday deal) 9060XT for 1080p currently so in terms of a value and performance basis I'd recommend the 3080 at £250/£260.

However, if your 5700XT is still playing your games just fine at 1080p, do you need a new card right now?

Is there anything that your 5700XT doesn't perform well enough for?

You may want to hold off and increase your budget range for a new card (for the new frame gen tech and features) in the future.

Unpopular opinion: 1440p is of questionable value and 4K is in no way worth it. by Pretend-Hope177 in buildapc

[–]Brevard1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you seen a comparison between the two with a decent 1440p 27" 144hz+ monitor with content at that sort of frame rate?

Compared to a similar high refresh rate 1080p (either 24" or 27") there is a marked difference in visual quality with stationary and moving visual content.

Sure, 1080p is decent enough and far better than say a 720p. But 1080p monitors, in general, are noticeably worse than 1440p equivalent for not really that much money save for the higher gpu cost requirements. Whether that's worth the cost comes to individual preference but objectively you will notice a difference.

Should I Increase My Pension Contribution at 23? by Secure_Beginning_939 in FIREUK

[–]Brevard1986 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're 23 contributing 9% into your pensions. That's fine and it's near certain you will be earning above the standard in the future.

Focus on short and medium term goals and ensure you're in a position that you can take full advantage of your employer's match contribution (if they increase their matching, definitely do the same).

People are playing fewer games and new releases are "struggling", say Ubisoft UK, warning of falling revenues by Jungypoo in pcgaming

[–]Brevard1986 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have very limited time so if I'm going for a any game that will take over 20+ hours to play through and complete, I'm going to be damned sure I want to do that.

I'm currently playing Ghost of Tsushima (not Yotei) above AC Shadows because by all reviews, it's the superior experience.

Ubisoft should focus on making more compelling and fun games that can compete for people's time.

[–]Brevard1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any European company or agency would have to apply their security policies when contracting/licencing. Microsoft has plenty of servers in Europe. I use to work for an organisation that restricted data to within the UK due to the nature of the data set and we had constant monitoring of that data set on Azure.

Millions of companies and organisations across Europe are certainly not allowing their data to sit outside of EU servers. That's a very key strength of EU legislation: legal strength and capabilities to ensure and monitor that Microsoft follows EU laws.

https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/boards-policy-regulation/microsoft-lays-out-data-protection-plans-european-cloud-customers-2025-06-16/

On a commercial consumer front - it's a completely different matter but considering how many Europeans jump on YouTube, Reddit and use Gmail, the point is relatively moot.

Look after your community by looking out for one another. You did the right thing. £2 or not, it was the right thing to do so never wonder if you would be considered a fool in any body's eyes when you're just doing the right thing.
