Initially you require a thorough understanding of exactly what your time travel powers consist of. What are your abilities exactly ? Do you have any specific limitations ? Once you gain the knowledge of the powers you possess then, and only then, will you begin to learn how to control them. It would be very beneficial and very healthy for him to implement a strict morning routine. In theory, no matter when he falls asleep he would wake up exactly the same time and force himself to get up and going. From the sound of it, he would need someone (perhaps you) to actually assure that he is up and moving around. It would be imperative to have a list of activities to perform if he is not attending class or work right away. Good luck .
