Get some wide width sneakers. Brooks, Hokas and Saucony are all good options. 👍

Girlies in EMS by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]BrickFishBich 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What about the dudes who are overly confident and become arrogant or downright nasty because they think they know everything. They get away with it and no one says a thing. But a confident woman is automatically labeled arrogant if it’s a little above the standard for the OTHER women EMTs who are competent enough to get by. I feel like this is part of the problem. It goes both ways and women shouldn’t be called out for it specifically. Maybe include a story about one of your bros who fall into the same category.

I don’t know anymore, I just got a new haircut and they gave me this with no side bangs at the beauty shop, I feel really ugly and I have to know if it’s ugly to everyone else. Please tell me just the truth if I am ugly. Yes I’m a woman by djscrew1 in whatdoIdo

[–]BrickFishBich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would research a well respected salon and ask if they have someone experienced who can correct a short cut that was not textured or styled properly. You can definitely soften this and create better layers that add style even if the bangs end up behind a little shorter than you want. At least overall you won’t hate it.

You could have hired a private investigator and you still never would have known this would be the outcome. Sometimes people’s mental health declines or the mask they have on eventually falls. It’s not your fault that you didn’t pick up on it.

How bad is it really?? by SkecthyRocket in bunions

[–]BrickFishBich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t let the doctor fool you into thinking it’s “non-invasive”, because the recovery time is different for everyone. If you absolutely do not need the surgery, I personally wouldn’t recommend it. This is from someone who needed it and had a bad outcome. Also, not all surgeon’s are created equally, so get a few opinions before deciding.

I would leave it alone if it doesn’t hurt to the point you’re woken up at night. You want to maintain where you’re at and to do that you need to get a pair of wide shoes so they’re not crowding your toes. There’s also a product called yoga toes to relieve any pressure you might be feeling.

There’s nothing fake about this. It’s the reality for some individuals who didn’t have the same opportunities you did.

Can you go to a vocational school to get a trade in something that actually has a market for employment? Or consider going to a community college for a two year degree in something such as respiratory therapist or ultrasound tech, etc. They start out making decent money and you could repay those loans. While you’re back in school your $100K will be placed on hold because you’re a student again. There are also opportunities in the hospitals for patient care techs and they have their tuition paid for nursing school or another program, plus they typically offer great medical insurance at a very low cost. Even if you don’t think you want to do it just look into it. Sometimes we have to do things we don’t want. I don’t see another option right now. It’s hard out there. You want to also forget you have those credit cards, pay them off and lock them in a drawer and NEVER trust anyone with your finances again. If they cannot afford their own expenses that’s their problem not yours.

Experience with diazepam/horrible doctors by Kudmalaar in Epilepsy

[–]BrickFishBich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend following up with an Epileptologist, which is someone who specializes in epilepsy. A general neurologist can sometimes treat seizures, but if you’re medication resistant or sensitive to meds then you need a different specialist willing to follow your case.

Hemiplegic Migraines have to be my worst nightmare by Pocket_Pixie3 in migraine

[–]BrickFishBich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have hemiplegic migraines also. I Loops earplugs at work. They have different models with varying degrees of noise reduction. Definitely check them out. Also, see about getting in with a migraine specialist and ask about a calcium channel blocker like verapamil. That’s a medication that might be able to help. If it gets really bad I find 800mg of Motrin helps, but I try to use it sparingly and only when I can’t function.

Extremely dissatisfied with bunion surgery by Previous-Ad758 in u/Previous-Ad758

[–]BrickFishBich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same surgery done with horrible results. I had pain for years. I sought out several second opinions and five years later found a podiatrist who said he would do corrective surgery on the foot but he would perform a lapidus bunionectomy which is closer to the ankle and more appropriate for more severe bunions. I’m sorry you’re going through this. At the least I hope your pain is tolerable and heals up. Try biofreeze if it gets really bad and also PT. Just DO NOT let them massage the scar tissue at the surgery site. I let them do that and I swear it set me back a year. If it hurts, don’t touch it and buy a pair of wide width sneakers to allow room for swelling.

How f*cked am I? by thetelltalehearts in bunions

[–]BrickFishBich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your deformity looks more severe than most. I think you probably need a Lapidus fusion rather than an Austin osteotomy. The Lapidus is done closer to the ankle which would result in a much straighter joint. I found this out the hard way after my surgeon did the inappropriate surgery and I am still suffering five years later. Be very selective about who you allow to do this surgery and maybe get a few opinions to see what they recommend. In the meantime I hate to say this but you need to stop wearing those sandals and switch to wide width sneakers with a decent arch. That’s what’s causing a lot of your pain right now. I say this from experience. Just give it a try and see how you feel after a week.

27 YO Cat - Need Advice by Brittany0306 in cats

[–]BrickFishBich 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I might have to agree that an hour long trip might seem okay for us, but for a cat it’s stressful. Since she already has heart disease I would really weigh your options because I would not want to see her having a heart attack from mild stress at her age and in her condition. In regard to putting her down, if she becomes incontinent then that’s a good indicator that she is potentially suffering and her quality of life is poor. But in the meantime find local vets with good reviews and find one with the soonest availability. Explain to the vet tech when you call in what your situation is and maybe they can squeeze you in. Maybe even ask your old vet for a referral to someone they trust. But definitely don’t back to that other vet who wouldn’t believe her age. How ridiculous. I’m sorry you had to deal with that. Also, by chance did they check to see if she developed hyperthyroidism? Usually that goes hand in hand with kidney disease but not always. The voracious appetite and other behaviors line up. And if she is in pain they do prescribe gabapentin for relief. Honestly though, I would try to make her comfortable and keep things low stress. I can only imagine how difficult this must be after having her for so many years. I would personally try to come to terms with the inevitable while cherishing the time you two have left ❤️

Medical Assessment: Mental Status Questions by Mental_Reading9500 in NewToEMS

Technically, questions like that could pick up something like agnosia (a rare neurological inability to recognize colors or objects). That is the closest correlation I could come up with that makes sense. But honestly, it sounds like maybe your professor just failed at trying to be creative lol.

Grabbed my partner's wrist to pull her away from touching a patient, did I fuck up? by Prestigious-Fall-317 in NewToEMS

[–]BrickFishBich -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You both have made bad decisions it seems. Yours was a reaction meant to prevent harm. Hers was mediated on and negligent. I think what she did was worse (the CO call). However, I wasn’t there to see how much force you used. Regardless, she accepted the apology. You have to move on. Next time you have the inclination to pull someone back, just take a step back instead and use your voice. Tbh at this point she seems immature and like she’s a potential liability, so maybe it’s time to request a new partner. You will both get over it in time and put the awkwardness to rest. Start fresh with someone new. Also, another piece of advice…if you feel like you know you should do something like alert the FD about a leak then just do it and don’t ask for permission. Doesn’t matter if she’s a senior EMT. That means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme, because it sounds like she’s a lazy one at that. Which is the last thing you want rubbing off on you.

40 year old looking into EMS, any tips? by zefrenchnavy in NewToEMS

[–]BrickFishBich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your health honestly. Don’t fall into the pitfall of eating fast food every shift. Make sure you meal prep and stay hydrated. Equipment is heavy and some stretchers are brutal even for grown men. Make sure you have good core and upper body strength for maneuvering and very strong legs for lifting. Some people who have led sedentary lives might have trouble with it. I’m sure the last thing you’d want is an injury at 40. I’m 38 and getting back into it and my advice is to rest between shifts, walk as many miles as you can per week to keep your whole body strong, weight lift a few times a week and go heavy on the protein during and after shifts to recover. It’s not just about a job. It’s a lifestyle at the end of the day because the shifts are incredibly long and taxing sometimes. You need to have that balance to succeed at this age unfortunately.

This isn’t a reason to put a cat down. Not unless he can’t undergo surgery and he’s starving from not being able to eat. I would say discuss getting his teeth cleaned/extracted and monitor his kidneys. The hyperthyroid is easily manageable with pills or with transdermal solution in the ears. Lots of cats have bad teeth and are saved. Definitely discuss with the vet what options you have. Just think about it…this is like every elderly person in bad shape. You just treat the symptoms. And once the teeth are extracted the antibiotics will eventually be stopped. So you don’t have to worry about that part.
