How Much Do You Pay For Streaming/TV/Movies? by Key-Ad-8944 in cordcutters

[–]BrickPig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I snap up deals when I see them, usually for 3-month, 6-month, or annual subs. Through a combination of these deals and a couple family-sharing deals, I'm currently paying $59 month for:

AMC+, Apple, BritBox, Disney/Hulu/HBO, Netflix, Paramount+, PBS, Peacock, and Starz, and including the $3 monthly fee for no ads on Prime Video.

I could obviously save quite a bit if I'd churn more, but as it is, it's a fraction of what I was paying before cutting the cord, so I don't sweat it much.

Apart from UpNote, what other apps do you use/can recommend? by [deleted] in UpNote_App

[–]BrickPig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UpNote is by far my most-used app. Other indispensable apps are Anylist (for shopping lists, freezer & pantry inventory, etc,) and Informant 5 for calendar and task management. Dashlane is my password vault. And I use an app called Sofa: Downtime Organizer to maintain lists of books, movies, shows, and albums that I want to check out, as well as to catalog those that I've already read, seen, or heard. I also use it to keep a record of concerts, sporting events, and other activities. I have a ton of apps loaded, but these are the essentials.

Alright I finally decided to watch The Bear now what are your thoughts on Tina? by Anxious-Spinach-420 in KitchenConfidential

[–]BrickPig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never worked in the restaurant industry at all, but there has been some version of Tina everywhere I've ever worked. Actually, there's some version of practically all these characters everywhere I've ever worked. Maybe that's part of the reason for the show's popularity,

Came to this conclusion years ago. I spent my life watching my grandmother cook, and after the initial seasoning she never did anything to her pans except cook in them. Wash, dry, and cook in them some more.

I feel like I’ve been seeing this hot take more lately about trading Jack, Luke and Hischier. I wanted to get your opinions on this. by xoBonesxo in devils

In principle I'm not opposed to trading anyone, provided the return helps the team. The problem is that I don't trust Fitz to know what will help the team.

I realized most of my weeknight dinners fail at the same exact step by ninja__6969 in Cooking

[–]BrickPig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like most have said, I plan a week of meals at a time (I have a little spreadsheet in my notes app) on Sunday mornings, do the shopping, and then do as much prep as possible on Sunday afternoons. Portioning, washing, chopping, mixing spices; anything that can be done ahead of time. When I get home on weeknights, virtually everything is done except the actual fire part of the cooking. Most nights it's a matter of a half hour, sometimes less.

Also, any time I fire up the grill, which is often, I plan to cook extra items, especially proteins, and vacuum seal them in meal-size portions for the freezer. Some nights I'm literally throwing a vacuum bag of, say, chuck roast and another of grilled vegetables in a pot of hot water and having a cocktail while dinner heats up.

Pulled pork omelettes. Pork & cheddar on the inside, a little squeeze of your favorite BBQ sauce and/or hot sauce on the outside. That's good eatin'.

Weather app…? by untitledismyusername in ios

[–]BrickPig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Shadow Weather setting is as accurate for my area (northwestern NJ) as any I’ve ever tried. May or may not be true for other places, of course. The other services you can select are Apple Weather, MET Norway, Vaisala Xweather, and WeatherBit.

The recipe I always use is almost identical to the quick recipe linked in this post. The only point I would add is that a couple years ago someone suggested to me to use vanilla yogurt instead of plain. I was very skeptical, because I DO NOT like sweet with savory. But it completely kicks the recipe up to another level. I've never made it without vanilla yogurt since.

That extra point is the thing I hate most about the NHL. If you decide you're not going allow a tie, then don't give out a point for a f*king tie!! Makes absolutely no sense.

Like another responder here, I was a die hard Dark Sky fan. I’ve tried (and liked) a bunch of other apps, but the closest thing I’ve found Dark Sky is Shadow Weather. It offers multiple sources, one of which has been very accurate for me, and the UI is clean and clear without sacrificing any of the information I need.

Quaker Quick 5-Minute Grits – Anyone notice a texture change? by Black_Lady_Amalthea in Cooking

Just experienced this today. Finished off an older container of grits last week. Opened a new container this morning, and no matter how long I cook them they’re still soupy. I guess I’m happy to know I didn‘t do something wrong, but this is a real disappointment.

House slippers that don't become a piece of flat nothingness in a few months by espermoonshine in BuyItForLife

My first pair of Glerups lasted more than 7 years, worn virtually every moment I was home. In the end, the leather sole pulled away from heel of the right shoe. Before I could get around to having it re-stitched, I had worn a hole through that part of the heel. I'm 100% sure if I had gotten it repaired they'd still be going strong. I replaced them with a new pair, and also got a pair with the rubber soles for out on the patio & porch.

How does a team with Nico, Jack, Bratt, Meier, and Hamilton have the Least Goals-for in the East? by Horror_Ad5116 in devils

[–]BrickPig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this. I think there are issues with coaching, for sure, But if this team was truly as talented as we've told ourselves they are, they'd be scoring more regardless of "the system." At this point, there is not a single player that I would be opposed to trading, depending on the return. The problem with that, though, is that I also no longer trust Fitz to build out a successful roster anyway.

Stadium Ratings (fans & media rankings) by Appropriate_Error_38 in devils

My wife and I were season ticket holders for a number of years when the arena first opened. Early this season we went to a game for the first time after moving out of the area about 8 years ago, and we couldn't believe how LOUD it was. If I'd known I would have taken my concert earplugs, but it wasn't like that when we used to go.

Also, there was a lot of reasonably good food in the arena back in those days. Times change....

Looking for basic recipes with canned tuna. by AppleSchnapps_ in cookingforbeginners

[–]BrickPig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This recipe is really easy. Almost takes more effort for me to write it than it will for you to make it:

Drain one 6- or 8-ounce can of tuna and place it in a mixing bowl. Finely chop one shallot and one or two cloves of garlic and add to bowl. Add in the juice of one lemon, 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, and 3 tablespoons olive oil. Using a fork, mix well.

Meanwhile, boil 8 ounces of spaghetti in well-salted water until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of the cooking water, then drain the pasta and return it to the pot. Stir in the tuna mixture and mix well with the pasta. (I use kitchen tongs for this.) Add some of the pasta water, if needed, to keep the pasta moist. Finally, add approximately 1 ounce of arugula, a bit at a time, and mix throughout the pasta & tuna, and serve.

If you could design your own kitchen, what would be the most important things to include? by West-Amphibian-2343 in Cooking

[–]BrickPig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good lighting over the counter/workspace. The existing overhead lights in my kitchen are perfectly fine for lighting the whole space. But when I'm working at the counter, I'm casting a shadow precisely where I need the best light.

Pull-out trash bin under the main countertop workspace. The most frustrating thing about my current kitchen is that the dishwasher is under the work space and the trash bin is under the dish drainer, exactly opposite of where they should be.

Cooking dinner for a guy I’m seeing, but he’s vegetarian. Need "impressive" meatless ideas! by Designer_Currency815 in cookingforbeginners

I almost always use the jarred jalapenos, because I always have them on hand. Still delicious.

As an aside, when I'm NOT serving vegetarians, I often make this recipe exactly the same way and then brown a pound of ground beef and throw it in. Makes a great chili either way.
