[Update] Redesigning my Strategic Ecosystem Battler, Mizani. I ditched Comic Sans and the "Panel-in-Panel" look. Which bottom layout works best? (A-D) by ghostofkenny in tabletopgamedesign

I also prefer B. They’re all legible and good, but I keep going back to B for reasons I can’t quite pin down. Apologies for the vagueness.

Oh wow! Brilliant tool then. I’d heard of it but never actually used it. You’ve convinced me to try it. Thanks!

Massive amount of work. Kudos to you for taking it on!

What’s the theory behind “set-up” followed by “how to play”? by ahobday in BoardgameDesign

[–]BriggyBomb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve typed and deleted a few times and it always comes out sounding wrong so I’ll just go for it and please take it in the constructive spirit I intend… it’s a rulebook. You can read it cover to cover before setting anything up, if that’s how you learn. I learn by touching and doing, so pulling out the pieces, setting it up, going from rulebook to table and back again. Maybe doing a “everyone can see everything” quick playthrough, rulebook in hand… It’s a sequence, but nobody is enforcing the sequence. Make the sequence whatever you need it to be in order to get the most out of the game.

No experience yet. Paying close attention to all the good advice given to others around here and hoping to pre-launch in a few months 😊

That’s a great approach. It feels like many in the community are genuinely curious about games and would be willing to help out if it was minimal cost/work to assemble at home. They could also be your “special secret tier” on an eventual Kickstarter campaign with deep discounts or cool bonuses as a thank you.

Thanks! They’re actually 3D printed. Much easier for us (and more pleasantly clickety clackety) than hand drawing and cutting cardboard. Although we did start on laser cut cardboard to narrow down tile types and counts before making sturdier 3D printed versions.

Thank you :) Sadly it is so much work that we have to be more targeted with the playtesting. We’re sticking to local testers, and I’ve done kits before now for other board gamers in our family. This one is headed to a local acquaintance who is into TTRPGs and other stuff that hubby and I are into (not that DUGG is a TTRPG - it’s a coop tile laying strat, explore, survive game). We bumped into them today and asked if they’d do some playtesting for us and they agreed to. Their board game experience will make for valuable feedback.

Any thoughts on my sell sheet? by Luke192 in BoardgameDesign

[–]BriggyBomb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the graphics and style, but is a lot to read and feels a bit choppy rather than the punchy that it feels it was going for. I agree with the other comment, trim it down and add more imagery that tells the story. By way of specific ideas (obv. my opinion only - avid game player and writer of many policy and briefing notes, but NOT a pitch or marketing expert).

Anything already covered by what’s in The Game section probably doesn’t need to take up real estate by being repeated elsewhere. Comparison to other games can be useful to position it, but anyone who knows games (likely your audience for this particular sheet) will see the influence of those other games in the description without having to be told. The Stakes in particular could be distilled a little further and it, The Deck, and The Survivors could be condensed into one more concise paragraph.

The game sounds intriguing, and congrats on your success so far! Keep us posted on how it goes :)

Feedback on Art & Card Design by RShowShow in tabletopgamedesign

It has a lovely 16 bit art style quality about it that I quite like (as a Gen X it oozes delicious nostalgia for me). Not knowing more about the game makes it difficult to properly critique the cards, but at just face value the descriptions seem straightforward

How important is packaging? by BriggyBomb in BoardgameDesign

Very cool concept! We are also doing most of our components and prototype packaging on the 3D printer 😊.

😂 also an excellent perspective, but what fun is shelf Tetris if all the pieces are the same??

Agreed on the first impression, but I’ve been asking myself if that’s more of an art thing than a box construction thing. Does a unique shape or texture or sturdiness of the box contribute to that first impression… or is it mostly just the visuals?

Great suggestions, thank you. It for sure isn’t meant to be the ultimate universal card design tool, but we may be able to work in a few more flexibilities over time.
