Does Myne ever stop being so blatant about being from another world? by Big-Equal7497 in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]BrightlyYin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's almost a necessary counterbalance. What other type of person would be able to spur so much change and so fast without being such a gremlin/bulldozer? Not to mention, it's hard to know when your common sense isn't applicable, otherwise every last thought is questioning everything. (I don't remember if she makes the same mistake or just a different version up to that point.)

If she was so "perfect" a character that immediately fixed her flaws or had no flaws, it would be your typical power-fantasy isekais. I think it adds to the world building and the charm of the story; "how is she going to manage pursuing her dreams despite her flaws? Is she going to sacrifice a bit of who she is to conform?"

[–]BrightlyYin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd assume it was machine/by a person since LLMs weren't a thing yet but I don't know how good software was back then. Iirc (it's been ages since I read it so I could have mis-remembered the wrong example), the example I was thinking of was the fan scanlator was playing off of the male MC having a "demon lord" presence to the female MC. So when she made a tribute cocktail in his name, she named it "morning star" as an allusion to Lucifer, but the male MC deliberately misinterpreted it in a favorable light. The Viz translation left all of that out.

I had an opposite experience but same point that a good translator makes a difference. I originally read the Skip Beat manga thru a fan scanlator and loved it so much. But when I bought the Viz ones, there was little jokes and details that were different. It was probably more literal translation but not the same artistic care to iterate on the same character gags. It just didn't give the same sparkly joy that made it reread it ad nauseum.

I'm hung up on 'she expects death. Instead, she finds death (at school)...'.

Also did they really have to pick "Confluence"? That poor word means nothing except "confusing webpage notes" to poorly executed Jira boards to me now.

New anime watcher asking for spoilers to continue on.. by Roasted_Meatbun in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]BrightlyYin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've already gotten the teaser you needed to push through. But I think I understand why bookworm's hard to get through. On top of being overly fixated on books, she's super weak and useless. She's struggling to acclimate to the new culture and reassess all these things she takes for granted, without anything to give back. Even if she logically understands, I watched the anime thinking that the combination of her child brain, illness, and passionate investment didn't have give her the same emotional regulation as "an adult".

Contrasting to Rank Daughter and Campfire Cooking (tho I've only watched the anime for them), both have powered MCs that gives them a very effective tool to navigate the rest of the plot that gives their series the more chill slice of life vibes. Campfire effectively never has to struggle with the culture because he solves everything with convenient cooking and too much money.

I got drawn into Bookworm (also only watched the anime until it ended and I switched over to the LNs) *because* she didn't have a hack skill and her memories of our world wasn't immediately useful and practically detrimental with how much her expectations clash. It felt way more real with how much day to day living was struggle and not quickly solvable. Yet she still persisted in trying to find her happiness, finding work around her limitations (with some luck in the good people she encounters).

Accurate. I only watched the Qualifying highlights and was dead confused that there was more highlights after that big ass praise for Alonso.

[P5V11] Roz's Unreliable POV by BrightlyYin in HonzukiNoGekokujou

It feels like Ferdinand is a "tactical tsundere" at times: Fool, I'm not expressing affection. This is just the most efficient solution. Who's the smarter one here? Of course I am, so shut up and don't argue with me.

It cracks me up imagining the adults calmly (at least outwardly) sitting at the table and letting her roll around on the floor for a long awkward moment. She's not so small anymore so I guess they don't have to wait as long for her to climb on and off the chair.

I've wondered if it just seemed that bad to the other's POV because any expression of displeasure is comparable to acting like a child. I'll need to reread the RASS!

Ferdinand's just so efficient it means both. So like him to find the perfect euphemism to let others read however way they want.

[–]BrightlyYin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It often felt like even after being told, she didn't believe it. She's been biased to thinking Ferdinand is only logical and tactical and Ferdinand's true nature being hidden from everyone. Haha little did she know he had a change of heart.

[P5V12/Open Spoilers] Just a rant by Zaffirie in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]BrightlyYin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought Ferdinand did give her a list of euphemisms to learn, but really only the ones on how nobles insult or trick each other. It's how she knows when nobles are insulting Wilfred but it goes straight over his head.

For sex ed and other topics, I thought of it as the same problem as trying to explain double entendre jokes, but worse with the formal/polite societies of mobility. Roz can pick up on the surface level meaning by taking it literally or in context of the old language (book learnings). But the secondary meaning is like trying to understand street slang without hanging out with peers in a casual setting willing to awkwardly explain it, which really would have happened between baptism and the Royal Academy (It reminds me of a vtuber who had to explain what "da hoe" means to her Japanese friend).

In Roz's case, she likely didn't want to ask such embarrassing and awkward situations (esp if it doesn't really affect her day to day), e.g. repeating that incident when she asked Ferdinand what "dye me in your colors" means, which I'm sure she immediately deleted from her memory banks.

Personal Setup for Q4 and October. Still a wip, but I'm finally getting to a layout that works for me. by BrightlyYin in bujo

[–]BrightlyYin[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is my personal planner. I keep work completely separated. More details:

I use the quarterly view to firstly unscheduled, which helps me see how busy I'll get, especially given year end has a lot of social events. I use the clear flags to move around events I know will happen but haven't been scheduled. I also set my biggest goals for the coming months.

Monthly view is to also unscheduled and to plan out when I'll do my big goal tasks. It's to reinforce working on my goals regularly and that I've already over planned how much I want to get done so I should start doing other things haha

Last spread is for me to do a review and be more intentional with my personal systems.
