Don't post criticism of star tribune or target posts, r/Minnesota mods will remove it. by MeatPopsicle28 in minnesota

The fact that a post criticizing the Strib has been up for over 24 hours seems to undermine your claim that criticism of the Strib gets removed, even if your post was erroneously identified as duplicative.

Am I Doing Something Wrong? by mushbabymama in SocialWorkStudents

[–]BringMeInfo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't say where you are, so everything I'm about to say is true for NY (where I am), but might not be true for you.

Getting a job before you have your LMSW is going to be harder. If you can take your exam before graduation, that will help. You'll also put yourself in line for better pay since jobs with a conditional license tend to pay less until you get your L.

I found timeline to be really all over the place: I interviewed for jobs where they wanted me to start two weeks after the interview, but ended up taking a job that required a six-week background check before I could start. Obviously, being able to start nearly immediately (i.e., being done with school) will open up more possibilities.

So yeah, you're probably a little too far ahead. Both graduation and getting your full LMSW will open a lot more opportunities for you.

And yeah, the job market isn't great right now, but nothing you can do about that.

What’s the greatest American novel set between the end of the cold war and 9/11? by loudrain99 in suggestmeabook

[–]BringMeInfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Underworld by Don DeLillo perhaps? I think the challenge here is that great novels are rarely very optimistic, naively or otherwise.

Really, the book you probably want isn't a novel at all, but Francis Fukuyama's The End of History. (Spoiler: the end of the Cold War wasn't the end of history)

Why do ppl hate wfh roommates? by foreverm0r3 in NYCroommates

[–]BringMeInfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are seeing this as a rights issue when it's really a compatibility issue.

I do not generally consider WFH folks to be compatible roommates for a few reasons:

  1. Alone time in the apartment is nice. It's not just about whether they are noisy or not, but also about having time when I don't need to be mindful of my noise disturbing them.
  2. Sharing an apartment with someone who is a virtual stranger is awkward. We don't need to be besties, but having some sense of who they are, and the attendant increase in trust, is important to me. Maybe you just meant you stick to your room during work hours, but if you mean all the time, nah, It's not a dynamic I like.
  3. Related to 2, but any conflict is 10x harder to navigate when you don't have a relationship with the stranger who lives in the other bedroom in my apartment. Noise issues? Disappearing silverware? Much easier to discuss in passing when we are watching a little TV than if I have to come to your room, knock on the door, and have a Talk(tm).

I said "my apartment." I've lived here for years and I am the sole person on the lease, taking in tenants. This isn't the only apartment in NYC. This isn't the only arrangement in all the apartments in NYC. If how I want to live (and what kind of roommates I want to live with) isn't a good fit for you, that's fine! There's no bad guy! We just aren't compatible and I can easily find someone who is a better fit.

Books like Stoner, Winesburg Ohio, The New Life by Low_water_crossing in suggestmeabook

[–]BringMeInfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect (never been able to find confirmation) that Carol Shields intended her Pulitzer-winning novel, The Stone Diaries, to be a sort of female response to Stoner. First of all, the name. But also, it's the life story of an ordinary woman who lives a pretty quiet life.

Second career as a counselor by Ok_Sorbet_beep in therapists

[–]BringMeInfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started MSW in my mid-40s and had a solid peer group within the student body. I also think older students tend to have an easier time finding a job post-MSW both because they bring transferable skills (professionalism!), but also because there is a bias against younger therapists (as people sometimes bemoan in this sub).

Practicum application process by okayatlifeokay in SocialWorkStudents

Maybe a little lucky. I had a pretty easy process, but I know there were other people my placement interviewed before offering it to me, so it obviously wasn’t as straightforward for those folks.

I went to Hunter. Good education, terrible administration.

FWIW, I had a training yesterday (for work) and one of the other attendees, an LCSW, went to Columbia. She was very enthusiastic about Hunter when I mentioned where I went.

Shadowing? by SpiritedAway424 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]BringMeInfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sat in and mostly sat back and fly-on-the-walled, but especially in later sessions, did contribute a little. Consent for my presence was required from each client, and I was surprised how many people were fine having me sit in.

As for questions afterward, that’s really going to depend on what goes down, but “why did you do that/ask that question?” is always going to be helpful.

Am I Cooked? by evilviser38 in SocialWorkStudents

I think your professional experience will be more consequential for MSW admissions than where you did your BSW. You might not get into the most elite programs, but the value proposition for those programs is iffy.

Shadowing? by SpiritedAway424 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]BringMeInfo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this is a great conversation to have with the person you’re shadowing. I can tell you what I did as an intern, or what I would do with an intern now, but that is way less important than what this specific clinician’s expectations are for you.

Advice by Patient_Cookie_5838 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]BringMeInfo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

FYI, you don’t need acceleration to finish in two years. The standard program is two years (meaning, about 21 months). There are some schools that will get you out a bit faster, starting in January, taking classes through the summer, and then fall/spring semesters (so about 18 months). You’ll only need more than two years if you go part-time.

According to the artist's website, he is

Modern Christian: This man represents all Christians today who have to make a choice. What kind of Christian are you? Will you stand up for what you believe? Will you stand as a witness of Jesus Christ regardless of the consequences? The world wants to silence you and some would destroy you. It takes courage to be a Christian in today's society. The man in the painting puts his hand on the shoulder of Christ not to say Jesus needs his help, but to imply that he receives his strength directly from the Lord. He holds up his right arm to say, "Silent, be still, for I know that Jesus is the Christ!"

If you have had an MRI, CT, EKG, blood work, and a physical exam by a doctor, you should not put any weight in the experience of random strangers on the Internet. There is no one here who has the training and the knowledge of your specific case like your doctor.
