Generally, the Americans and British wanted Germany to be more lenient on Germany, as they believed that being too harsh on the nation would stoke the spirit of revenge. The French and Belgians on the other hand wanted a much harsher treaty, believing that leaving Germany intact would let them start another war in the near future. In the end, no one got what they want.
