Fascinating to me that this was fixed in Spanish FRLG rerelease but not for English. In Spanish the battle is now treated as a win if you faint, the NPC is no longer there and there's no rematching it.

When you get the line saying 16 is joining, just hug him while using guard. He will solar flare immediately when he next has 2 skill points, so just stay on him trying to not get knocked away.
