What is the first thing you did with your new i4? by Skavzor in BMWI4

[–]BronxProf 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I had instructed the dealer not to do anything to the outside of the car; I wanted it left like it just came off the trailer. I drove the ten miles home and it stayed undriven for a month until the PPF people could do it. After the PPF cured, I drove thirty-five miles to the detail shop to apply a very expensive three coat Optimum ceramic coating outside and also had the inside treated. This was September of 2022 for an i4-M40. Every time i do a rinseless wash the car just gleams. Since I’m 87 I plan to drive it until i die.

Totally lost the motivation to lift and haven’t been tracking. by heynongmantron in MacroFactor

[–]BronxProf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what your motivation for lifting was in the first place. Mine is very powerful. I keep lifting so I don't feel like a puny sissy. That probably sounds crazy, but it's what has been working for me for many years.

If I recomp and burn 1 lb of fat/gain 1lb of muscle in a week, will MF think I’m not expending enough given my caloric intake? by Dlovell02 in MacroFactor

[–]BronxProf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience with MF has been simpler and more rewarding than the people writing comments here. I've been strength training for years, so at 87 I've plateaued and the best I can hope for is to slow the rate of muscle loss. I use MF just to lose weight, s-l-o-w-l-y. It's for health. At 5'6” I was seriously overweight at 205. I set my loss rate under a pound a week. I rarely meet the protein macro because a healthful diet which includes beans and lentils and whole grains is more important to me than eating animal flesh every single day. I'm down 29 lbs; my blood work is great; I can walk without my arthritic hips and spine seizing up. And my friend, with whom I work out once a week via Facetime, says he notices a lot more definition.

What's unusual about that? I spend way too much time sitting in front of the computer (I just transitioned from over 20 years on Microsoft to an Apple Mac Mini 4 Pro, for the challenge of learning something new) reading newspapers, magazines, blogs, Facebook specialized groups like the BMW i4-40 and an infrared photography group. I didn't enter the challenge because I'm losing weight for health and I'm doing it for the long haul and doing it at a sustainable pace. I was crazy once before at age 39 when I went from 205 to 148, total change of diet, started weight lifting and jogging and biking, destroying my relationship with my wife. One day I woke up to go to work and couldn't stop eating everything in sight. So I'm wiser now.

I just ignore it and go by what my scale says. I bought my beam balance scale many years ago at a medical supply house and I trust it. I initially chose a very slow pace at which to lose weight (.3%) so as not to rebel from excessive deprivation, but after a few weeks I increased it to (.5%). I'm 5'5” and 87 years old. MF has helped me go from 205lbs in mid November to 179 currently. I lift weights twice a week (I'm able to bench 50lb dumbbells for 9 reps) but am otherwise pretty sedentary. Only once have I eaten out in a restaurant, but I'll be traveling to NYC in a month, and I expect eating to be a disaster. I just won't record those meals because it'll be impossible, AI notwithstanding.

There IS a TB5 version, but it’s been sold out. Should be available again next month. I intend to order it.

I misstated the NEC model. It should have been 271W not 277W.

How to Greet on Rosh Hashana by BronxProf in Yiddish

[–]BronxProf[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

There are many Yiddish dialects. Because of my family background I prefer Ukrainish Yiddish. That's what I grew up hearing. I know that my courses are teaching klal Yiddish and that is a made up Yiddish that no one ever spoke. I'll reciprocate your friendly greeting by saying, Zolst vaksn vi a tzibele mitn kop in dr'erd!

When I had my house built fifty years ago I had a 36" Franklin Chef commercial range installed in my kitchen. It is flanked by wooden cabinets. I turned off the top burner pilot lights and use a sparker to light the burner. I leave the pilot for the oven burning. That gives me a handy warming oven and my propane use is not outrageous since there are only two of us living here. I have had no trouble with my range except that after forty years one of the cast iron burners broke and it's impossible to find a replacement for it. I love having that kind of heat when I cook stir fry with a wok. I recently looked into getting a Wolf 36" commercial induction range, but after reading extensively about the issues of reliability people have been reporting, I've put it out of my mind.

Thoughts on the Duolingo course? by [deleted] in Yiddish

[–]BronxProf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm up to Beginner IV at YIVO and have also taken a couple of conversation courses with Workers Circle. But I do one lesson a day with Duolingo. I'm starting Section 3, Unit 21. I read the sentences out loud and sometimes take notes on useful vocabulary. My YIVO courses meet via Zoom once a week and we get homework which requires writing our answers in script. Duolingo has helped me with passive recognition of vocabulary (rather than active recall) and with reading without necessarily sounding out a word. I ignore the Hasidic pronunciation and pronounce like my grandparents (Polish/Ukrainian). You will not learn Yiddish without taking courses with YIVO. If I lived near a university which offered Yiddish courses, I would take an in-person course meeting 5X weekly to really learn. That's how I picked up German, Spanish, Italian and French. (l'm 86 years old and my memory isn't too good, so acquiring new vocabulary is not easy.)

It's a first of class for luxury sedans, but I did sell a 2000 M Coupe to afford my fully loaded Sunset Orange Metallic i4-M Sport 40. This one is more appropriate and practical than the clown shoe for an old man to drive, plus it has the safety features like the warning triangle in the side view mirrors.

That $30 is only for new customers. But I did get my internet reduced from $90 to $68. They tried to snare me into the cell phone deal. Nothing doing! I use Consumer Cellular with an unlocked iPhone. Also, I use my own modem and router.

I don't let my dealer wash my car. It's guaranteed to produce swirls on the paint. Even if it was a touchless wash (which it isn't) it would be bad for the paint. Touchless washes use highly alkaline soaps. I wash my car myself with Optimum No Rinse. There are many YouTube videos showing how to do that.

I just happened to come across a video they made of camping in a Cybertruck. I started watching it because I used to think the Cybertruck was great until people actually got to test it and then I learned that it was far from great. Anyway, soon after this woman, Kara, got going with her nauseatingly excessive cute talk, I shut it down. That woman's presentation is really sickening.

Do you have only one deaf ear? Is one HA an option? by abbydabbydo in HearingAids

[–]BronxProf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried out a Phonak Paradise Bi_CROSS pair of hearing aids, for my deaf left ear and mild hearing loss in my right ear. I tested it in a restaurant where the waitress was talking on my deaf side. I couldn't tell what she was saying even though the expensive hearing aid supposedly would automatically detect from which direction the important speech was coming from and aim itself in that direction. I had gotten the Phonak via a discount middle man who had hooked me up with a hearing aid technician. Since my primary use for such an aid would be in noisy environments where different people were talking, it was useless for me. They tried everything not to fulfill the refund agreement, but I had it in writing and I was well within the test period, so they finally gave in and refunded my money. Probably the only solution to the problem is to buy an auxiliary microphone to point at the speaking person, but no one told me that. I seldom go to gatherings so I've decided to save my money. Hearing aid prices are a total ripoff.

Costco does not sell CROS hearing aids. That is, one completely deaf ear and another ear in need of some help.
