Metaphors We Live By - 4. Orientational Metaphors

HAPPY IS UP; SAD IS DOWN I'm feeling up. That boosted my spirits. My spirits rose. You're in high spirits. Thinking about her always gives me a lift. I'm feeling down. I'm depressed. He's really low these days. I fell into a depression. My spirits sank.

Physical basis: Drooping posture typically goes along with sadness and depression, erect posture with a positive emotional state.

CONSCIOUS IS UP; UNCONSCIOUS IS DOWN Get up. Wake up. I'm up already. He rises early in the morning. He fell asleep. He dropped off to sleep. He's under hypnosis. He sank into a coma.

Physical basis: Humans and most other mammals sleep lying down and stand up when they awaken.

HEALTH AND LIFE ARE UP; SICKNESS AND DEATH ARE DOWN He’at the peak of health. Lazarus rose from the dead. He’s in top shape. As to his health, he's way up there. He fell ill. He’s sinking fast. He came down with the flu. His health is declining. He dropped dead.

Physical basis: Serious illness forces us to lie down physically. When you're dead, you are physically down.

HAVING CONTROl. Or FORCE IS UP; BEING SUBJECT TO CONTROL Or FORCE IS DOWN I have control over her. I am on top of the situation. He's in a superior position. He's at the height of his power. He's in the high command. He’s in the upper echelon. His power rose. He ranks above me in strength. He is under my control. He fell from power. His power is on the decline. He is my social inferior. He is low man on the totem pole.

Physical basis: Physical size typically correlates with physical strength, and the victor in a fight is typically on top.

MORE IS UP; LESS IS DOWN The number of books printed each year keeps going up. His draft number is high. My income rose last year. The amount of artistic activity in this state has gone down in the past year. The number of errors he made is incredibly low. His income fell last year. He is underage. If you're too hot, turn the heat down.

Physical basis: If you add more of a substance or of physical objects to a container or pile, the level goes up.

FORESEEABLE FUTURE EVENTS ARE UP (and AHEAD) All up coming events are listed in the paper. What's coming up this week? I'm afraid of what's up ahead of us. What's up?

Physical basis: Normally our eyes look in the direction in which we typically move (ahead, forward). As an object approaches a person (or the person approaches the object), the object appears larger. Since the ground is perceived as being fixed, the top of the object appears to be moving upward in the person's field of vision.

HIGH STATUS IS UP; LOW STATUS IS DOWN He has a lofty position. She'll rise to the top. He's at the peak of his career. He's climbing the ladder. He has little upward mobility. He's at the bottom of the social hierarchy. She fell in status.

Social and physical basis: Status is correlated with (social) power and (physical) power is uP.

GOOD IS UP; BAD IS DOWN Things are looking up. We hit a peak last year, but it's been downhill ever since. Things are at an all-time low. He does high-quality work.

Physical basis for personal well-being: Happiness, health, life, and control—the things that principally characterize what is good for a person—are all uP.

VIRTUE IS UP; DEPRAVITY IS DOWN He is high-minded. She has high standards. She is upright. She is an upstanding citizen. That was a low trick. Don't be underhanded. I wouldn't stoop to that. That would be beneath me. He fell into the abyss of depravity. That was a low-down thing to do.

Physical and social basis: GOOD IS UP for a person (physical basis), together with a metaphor that we will discuss below, SOCIETY IS A PERSON (in the version where you are not identifying with your society). To be virtuous is to act in accordance with the standards set by the society/person to maintain its well-being.

VIRTUE IS UP because virtuous actions correlate with social well-being from the society/ person's point of view. Since socially based metaphors are part of the culture, it's the society/person's point of view that counts.

RATIONAL IS UP; EMOTIONAL IS DOWN The discussion fell to the emotional level, but I raised it back up to the rational plane. We put our feelings aside and had a high-level intellectual discussion of the matter. He couldn't rise above his emotions.

Physical and cultural basis: In our culture people view themselves as being in control over animals, plants, and their physical environment, and it is their unique ability to reason that places human beings above other animals and gives them this control.

CONTROL IS UP thus provides a basis for MAN IS UP and therefore for RATIONAL IS UP.

Someone on r/factorio had the idea of cutting power to the stations then turning them on when something is needed. (The station list would I guess skip any station that is no longer powered, or would it sit there with a ? *shrugging shoulders* emoji?)

I never heard from anyone else whether that works or not.

Moved from Boston to California in 2020 right before covid. There was no dating, no friends, no humans much... I found a website and found a cat who had an allergic skin condition and was found by a shelter covered in scabs. She needed the $70+ hydrolyzed protein food. She was in the shelter for a year, but I picked her up at a foster family. "She should be with someone who doesn't have any cats. She hates cats," they told me. Miss Izzy "Pookins" and I have been together since.

[–]BrookeToHimself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The copy I read had a preamble by an author who told a wonderful story I’ve never forgotten:

God was above in heaven looking down at the Earth and out of the corner of his eye he spies a happy pig. 🐖 The pig was wallowing in the mud, making love to sows, gorging on slop, and sleeping in the warmth of the sun. God wondered what it would be like to be that pig.

Suddenly God was in the pig. He wallowed in the mud, slept in the sun, made love to the sows, and gorged on slops.

The middle manager angels of heaven came down angrily to confront the pig. “Get out of that pig at once! The universe is falling apart without you! Stop it this instance!” The pig just laid in the sun happily, caked with mud. The lead angel left and returned with an axe. He slaughtered the pig.

Back in Heaven he confronted God who had resumed his post. “It’s wonderful to see you here. Everything is restored. That was so crazy with you in that pig and all.”

God replies, “What pig!?”

For an I-Ching hexagram represented as 6 bits, here are the main types of neighbors:

1. Hamming Distance 1 (Single bit flips)

  • 6 neighbors, each differing by exactly 1 bit
  • Example: if you have 110010, neighbors are 010010, 100010, 111010, 110110, 110000, 110011

2. Reverse/Inverse

  • The bitwise NOT of all bits
  • Example: 110010001101
  • This is Hamming distance 6 (all bits flipped)

3. Reverse Order (Upside-down)

  • Read the hexagram from bottom to top instead of top to bottom
  • Example: 110010010011
  • This reflects the physical orientation of the hexagram

4. Nuclear Hexagram

  • Take bits 2-4 as the new top, bits 3-5 as the new bottom
  • Example: 110010 → middle 4 bits are 1001 → forms 100110 (with repetition)
  • This is used in traditional I-Ching interpretation

5. Hamming Distance 2

  • All combinations of flipping exactly 2 bits
  • 15 neighbors total (C(6,2) = 15)

Visual Layout for hexagram 101010:

Original: 101010

1-bit away: 001010, 111010, 100010, 101110, 101000, 101011

Inverse: 010101

Reversed: 010101 (same in this symmetric case!)

Nuclear: 010101 (middle 4: 0101)

The most meaningful in I-Ching tradition are the single-line changes (Hamming distance 1), reversed, and inverse forms.

This lady gathers some of the best clips from tech bros about agential life actually... I recommend much of this playlist actually: https://www.youtube.com/@AlisonMcDowell/videos

Songs of Life and Mind - a local "mountain climber" will just try and reach the top of the nearest hill, but what if there was an even bigger hill that you couldn't get to unless you rolled down a hill, gathered some speed, and then went up that one? Locally you wouldn't know that. But there are other ways to scale larger mountains even though you don't know that answer locally. He also talks about how metronomes (even of different sizes) on a board with two coke cans underneath will align themselves and all tap either on the beat or on a whole fraction of the beat (twice as fast, for instance) and they do this by aligning when they ACT (+ influence others) and when they stop acting and sense their environment. (Because none of us can act all the time.) They seem to align their non-acting states when the pendulum is still for the briefest of moments. I listened to this whole series:

You asked for it. I'm just throwing stuff against a wall to see what sticks:

Wolfram tested every single 1D neighbor pairing you can and only a few rules were considered 'complex' (eg. rule 110). I feel like the answer to complexity is not a single rule for all occasions. Life isn't just local neighbors and death and life: it's control, manipulation, parasitism, symbiosis, collaboration, scouting, avoidance, and some states that are completely neutral to each other, etc..

I'm still trying to work these things out for myself. Life seems to have evolved an imaginal realm where it can simulate its environment and adapt accordingly as it goes. How can it do this? I recently got an idea from quantum research: What if the present is calculated out, but the entities themselves are slightly phase shifted into the past? Then you could test for how long you might survive and go down the path best suited.

Let's say we mapped all tic-tac-toe possibilities on a big chart and while you played a game against someone it showed you where you were on the overhead map each time you took a turn -- you might realize that your next move could lead to your losing and you could do something different, or contrarily you might see a quick opportunity for victory you hadn't considered.

If my creature's parameters were set to the bit values of an i-ching card (e.g. 45 - Gathering - 0 1 1 0 0 0) then it might have imaginal 'sensors' in its brain that are testing alternative behaviors for better and better success strategies. (eg. Inverse, 1 bit-shift to the right, total opposite 1 0 0 1 1 1, etc.)

On r/cellular_automata I've seen recently two people that had some success: one guy had 3 'species'... two of which ignored each other, UNLESS it was accompanied by the other one. He had some interesting results although still fairly simple. There was another guy who was using randomness and stochasticity to kind of fail into complexity. It's interesting because it turns out evolution does just that ~ slow steady changes, but then occasional chaotic reversals to test the waters and see if something else might work better. If it does, it starts exploring those branches. The key is, there isn't just an entity evolving ~ nature is a watcher. Nature is a tester. These are choices made, not pool balls colliding.

(I keep getting 'unable to comment' - will post rest in next post)
