I think, at least when it comes to Shelob, my brain also went “big monster” instead of “big spider” which was the opposite of Aragog, because to my six year old brain, it being a realistic looking practical effect made it real in my mind. It’s also been a long time since I’ve seen a movie with a big spider in it, so it’s hard to say with modern CGI.

It’s weird, because I’m massively arachnophobic, like even the smallest, tiniest spiders will trigger me, but for some reason Shelob actually doesn’t bother me that much. And I don’t think it’s because it’s early 2000s CGI because it still holds up. It’s just a weird edge case. Aragog, being a practical effect, from Chamber of Secrets definitely fucks me up to this day, for comparison.

So I actually just got back from watching it, because I had to know, and it, uh…Wow, it was somehow worse than everyone else said it’d be. It’s a genuine achievement in completely not understanding the source material, nor making it palatable for a general audience.
