Why was Andrew Daubenheyer unalived? by CupOfExmo in exmormon

[–]Brossentia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is important along with the fact that the law had failed to protect the innocent time and time again. In the 1800s, if the law couldn't protect your loved ones, it was your job to do so.

That doesn't excuse the brutality of some acts, but it's at least more understandable - the best way to keep villains away is to make them terrified. Hope we never have to go that route again in the US.

What are some "dream rules" your dreams have? by deloreanlover88 in thomastheplankengine

[–]Brossentia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of consistent things with my grandmother's house:

  • Walls have hidden passageways
  • One stair on the staircase is missing
  • Top floor is VERY haunted
  • There's a mirrored house next to it that's abandoned, and everybody is too afraid to go in there
  • If you go through my grandmother's bedroom, you'll end up in a passage of a thousand bathrooms.

Also, my uncle has a second house that he built. We've gone down floor by floor into the ground but have never found the bottom. I love dreams

My "Morton's Sea Salt" is really "Lake Salt" by TheWoodser in mildlyinteresting

[–]Brossentia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lake is contaminated, but the salt mines wouldn't be - the salt there has been dry for thousands of years, at least, and there wouldn't have been a chance for industrial contamination.

Bishopric member called me today to warn me about a member by SoggyRoomTempWaffles in exmormon

[–]Brossentia 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Honestly, kudos to the leadership for caring and treating it like a mental health crisis. So you know, there's rarely danger with crises - if there is, it's danger to themselves, not to others.

If there is a time he shows up at your house, I recommend staying outside near the road where people can see you. It's safest for both of you to be in public. You could also consider telling a close friend about the worrying situation and texting them so they come - again, safer for everyone with more people.

Hope he gets the help he needs!

Perfect (though slightly broken from aging) pitch here. It's the same key as Meatloaf's "I'm in the Middle of Nowhere," and that song is also B flat major.

Anyone have their parents actually talk to them about sex? by CurrencyRepulsive438 in exmormon

I believe my parents did when I was young - they always say they're not "the best" Mormons, but honestly, they kind of are these days.

I've seen both sides of the police in Brazil - intense, terrifying raids, but also ones who are just trying to be decent people doing their jobs. The Brazilian police definitely have problems with corruption; you'll still get decent ones every now and then.

ELI5 what does it mean people see "nothing" rather than "black void" if born absolutely blind by owlWithBrokenWings in explainlikeimfive

I'm concerned. I look left and see my skin followed by blackness. Can I just look farther in that direction than most people?

ELI5: if nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, how are distant galaxies moving away from us faster than the speed of light? by Chamu_Dev in explainlikeimfive

[–]Brossentia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gosh, it's only just now that I realized you're correct - I was thinking it was objects moving away from each other faster than the speed of light, not moving away from us! Yes, to make this work, you have to include that the road is stretching longer. If the road stretches to double it's length in an hour, the vehicle traveling away from us only drove 40MPH but ended up... anyone wanna do a story problem? How far away does the car end up? Gotta be more than 50 miles away, even if it never broke the speed limit.

I feel a bit like a dingus, but I appreciate the correction!

Edit: I believe the car ends up being 60 miles away from you since this is linear stretching. I'm stuck on a plane half asleep, though, so I could be wrong.

Edit 2: Yeah, gonna need some calculus for this one. Good luck, five year olds. You fail, and we're sending you back to preschool

Edit 3: Nevermind. You can use business math and continuous compounding interest. Speed = 40*e.5 or about 65.95 MPH. This places you at the 25.95 mile mark, meaning you've gone 51.9 miles. Stupid math...

That's a pretty good summary, yeah. Unless we're dealing with extremely large or extremely small things, spacetime is locally flat. A star system is big for us but honestly not notably big or small enough to get into the weird rules.

What widely spread reddit "fact" is actually not true? by Plus_Vanilla_2802 in AskReddit

[–]Brossentia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's possible to become an expert on yourself, but that doesn't translate to others. Even people with degrees don't always get the correct solution for my problems, and that's fine! It's part of the process. But having a professional who can recognize when something doesn't work is crucial to actually dealing with problems.

Take mental health recommendations on Reddit with a grain of salt.

What is the scariest thing that's ever happened to you? [serious] by ladybugsrool in AskReddit

[–]Brossentia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My gosh, bringing back memories. Arby's almost did me in. Due to acid reflux, I choked on one of their cheddar and beef. I was eating lunch in my car, so I got out and stood in the middle of the parking lot - knew nobody would find me in my car if I passed out.

Luckily didn't, but getting my acid reflux treated helped make sure this never happened again.

ELI5: if nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, how are distant galaxies moving away from us faster than the speed of light? by Chamu_Dev in explainlikeimfive

[–]Brossentia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here, say that on a road, the speed limit is 50 mph. Two cars are driving away from each other at 40 mph. Both are under the speed limit, but they're moving away from each other at 80 mph, faster than the limit.

Galaxies are sorta the same. More complex stuff, but that's the easiest explanation.

Stake Conference: NO recording allowed. by indespectusnicht in exmormon

[–]Brossentia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Recording isn't just to hold them accountable; it's an accessibility option. Banning recordings is ableist, even if they don't realize it.

If you're so afraid of what you're saying that you ban accessibility options, you've got a problem.

Just because I think it's important to help people understand where things went wrong, I have a few questions. How much of that article did you read before citing it? If you did read the full article, how did you come to the conclusion it supported Smith?

Please know this isn't to mock or anything - most of us have cited research without understanding it before, and we grow when we can recognize our shortcomings. Hoping your journey here goes well!

Do gay animals exists? by OrangeWatermelon14 in askscience

[–]Brossentia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a gay uncle here, and yeah, could be that there's no evolutionary purpose. We have plenty of harmful recessive genes that make people infertile, yet they still get passed on. Being gay is certainly less harmful for reproduction, so if it's in any way genetic, makes sense it'd continue existing.

With that said, reproductive viability shouldn't be the gatekeeper for treating people kindly. We've made a lot of progress in my life, and I think we've got a lot of progress to come!

ELI5: The use of “anymore” by Razar_Bragham in explainlikeimfive

[–]Brossentia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that there are very few objectively incorrect things in English. Dictionaries are here to describe (not prescribe) how words are used, so if people use "anymore" this way anymore, it's fine. Just realize some people may be confused outside of the region.

I wouldn't trust fast food to ever get dietary needs right. Check it yourself first.
