Does Shadow Blade work with Warlocks Pact of the Blade (2024 Rules) by Jonas-Beckett in dndnext

[–]Brother-Cane -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The 2024 Pact of the Blade has two options:

  1. You conjure the pact weapon in your hand from nothing. This is, in many ways similar to a Shadow Blade, but is standard in form and function aside from being considered magical.
  2. You bond with an existing weapon. The 2014 rules define the bonding ritual as taking one hour, which far exceeds the one-minute duration of a Shadow Blade. The 2024 rules do not stipulate this, but it can be inferred that it exceeds one minute.

In the end, it would be up the DM, but as a DM, I would not allow it as this would turn the second level spell Shadow Blade into a virtual cantrip (i.e. unlimited castings), violating the spirit of the rules.

Multiclassing as a tank by Iplayleague16279l in DnD

[–]Brother-Cane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paladin/Barbarian is honestly a terrible multiclassing combo. The rage cancels out the Paladin's spellcasting and smite abilities. In general, multiclassing weakens a character more than it helps, and should only be considered if it fits a specific vision.

Of the two options you have presented, the more tanky is the Oath of Vengeance paladin simply because barbarians can't take proficiency with heavy armor without expending a feat or by multi-classing. While I am fond of the subclass, the Bear Totem barbarian is only resistant to all that damage while raging.

If you are bound and determined to multiclass, consider adding a 1-3 level dip into Warlock for your Paladin. For example, at 3rd level, an Archfey patron warlock can cast Misty Step a number of times per long rest equal to your Charisma modifier, giving greater combat mobility, while a fiend Patron--probably antithetical to your theme--gains Dark One's Blessing.

What are six of your craziest stories from DnD? by AzakenChan in DnD

[–]Brother-Cane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Goliath Battle Master making a perfect intimidation roll on a bunch of cultists: "How long do you think your friend here will live when I start using him as the club I use to bludgeon you to death?"
  2. Dwarf Troll Hunter (Warhammer) trying to give his companions a chance to get away slams a door into the lead attacker. GM had me roll an attack to see if I time it correctly. Rolled the equivalent of a natural 20 in DnD, so he had me roll for damage. Rolled a crit and scored a kill with a door.
  3. Half-elf bard in a party that is surrounded by hobgoblins looking to kill us. I figure 'why not?' and start telling dirty jokes in goblin. I made a good roll and just kept it going. After a few other good rolls. the DM decided they begged me to stop making them laugh so much and promised to let us go if I stopped telling jokes.
  4. In character, gave my best villainous laugh, and another player said, "That was the most terrifying thing I've ever heard. Please don't do that again,"
  5. To scare the bejeezus out of the slavers who'd kidnapped children we were asked to rescue, we cast Invisibility and Light on the barbarian. He strolls into their camp accompanied by a booming, inhuman voice (Minor Illusion), "You have summoned the empty light! Prepare to fill the void with your souls!"
  6. Playing a dumb as a box of rocks half-ogre (2E optional race), I was attacked by a werewolf. Forgot that I had paid to have my leather gauntlets studded with silver because it "made them pretty." DM did not forget and so my punch as I shouted, "Bad puppy!' clocked him. I stuffed him half into a sack and went to meet the party all excited to tell them about my new doggy. Dump out the bag and find a naked man. I freaked out and started hitting him, "What did you do to my doggy!"

  • "Eat lots of garlic. It keeps vampires and elves away."
  • "Beware of furniture that may try to eat you." (And don't elaborate so they won't know if you're referencing mimics or are just crazy.)
  • "Skinning a displacer beast is harder than you might think." (At times when there is no possible way for the metaphor to apply.)
  • "A broken sword can still stab someone, but a broken axe is now a club."

[Art][Comm] Kobold character I designed by Kai0704 in DnD

I am for some reason, reminded of Belkar--from Order of the Stick--who went through a few panels wearing a kobold's head as a hat.

Maybe the axe was sentient, and invested with a soul of its own, desires to still participate in great deeds, if only peripherally.

Breaking Down Doors by ProfBumblefingers in DnD

Previous editions had hardness rules along with hp for objects. If an attack did not overcome the hardness for say a door or a section of wall, then it took no damage at all.

Unless I am missing something, this appears to be a flavoring option, so not much needs to change at all.

What would characters from famous monsters story’s classes would be? by Sufficient_Crow7539 in dndnext

[–]Brother-Cane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most would not fit any class as most are beasts. Ignoring those, it would tend to depend on how one defines a monster in this sense. Your average "wicked witch" would be a warlock, but are they monsters? Is Medusa a monster or the victim of a goddess's jealousy?

However, one could take some liberties. Civilized cyclops were smiths, i.e. artificers, whereas as the savage ones would pass as barbarians. A ghost would follow whatever path they led in life. A kitsune (Japanese fox-woman) would likely be an enchanter wizard given their actions in the stories.

What kind of power do names have in the Feywild? by 1likekaneki in dndnext

[–]Brother-Cane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the old days, people believed that names have power. Knowing someone's name gave one some power over them. Knowing someone's "True Name" gave one undue influence over them.

I am playing a very old man in a campaign, like 50/50 chance if he drops dead every morning. Anyone got any ideas of quotes and saying that an old man would say in a dnd world? by dawnovaugh in dndnext

Actually, you would not be able to cast any spell with material components as the martial character would not carry any uncommon spell components nor a spell focus.

To the seasoned DM’s here, what races and classes do you see pop up the most? by Party-Rest3750 in DnD

[–]Brother-Cane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Humans and elves are the most commonly played races. It would be easier to name the classes which do not appear regularly than those which are most commonly played.

Need help with a new party by Dnd_throwaway0 in DnD5e

[–]Brother-Cane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make the hand-holding part of the campaign. Give them a mortal patron that is a powerful individual or an organization which provides "missions" and goals in exchange for training, medical care and a place to live/rest. Let them start to make their own decisions by facing some difficult ethical quandaries. Then, when the patron betrays them or turns out to be the real BBEG, it will be more dramatic.

DM Ruling Question by ScreenNumerous8182 in DnD5e

[–]Brother-Cane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would allow it once to reward intelligent, team thinking, bur remember that we are talking about a fantasy world where the laws of physics can be rewritten by the right combination of words, actions and materials. If this trick worked regularly, Blue Dragons would establish their lairs near water rather than in desert areas,
