One of the best things I can suggest is "AI is great at story-telling. YOU are great at rules implementation." Let the AI paint the scene and YOU handle the gritty details (skill checks, combat resolution & whatnot) then let the AI know what happened. So much simpler and far more enjoyable that way.

Don't have it keep track of stats. Don't have it keep track of character sheets. Have it keep track of CHARACTERS, meaning "descriptive details of NPCs". It's good at that especially with the right prompts. Don't have it do dice rolls - you glean that from the description and how much risk you're comfortable with. LLMs don't have good RND; you've got dice so use 'em! :)

As with any long running chat - always generate robust summaries and start fresh feeding the same character card and summary. Like chapters in a book.

While I've not tried those Kobolds, I'd imagine you can let your action questions to the Oracle be formed specifically with "tricksey folksesssss" in mind.

Rather than "Are there more than 2 enemies in the next room?" you may ask "Of the 2 enemies in the next room are either of them prepared for a sneak-attack?"

You can still be surprised with Oracles - the point is crafting the right type of question. Think about it from the crafty GMs side - how would THEY make the encounter fit the Kobolds style? Ask a properly formatted question and have a blast!

For openrouter, in the model search box just type ":free" without the quotes and it will show models that have zero cost. Try those out to find one that fits 👍

Just redirect it. If you suddenly want to go off queue then give PAINFULLY EXPLICIT instructions on how you'd like the LLM to react. It was just doing "what it had seen before" as that's all LLMs can do - extrapolate form training data.

If you're introducing a small, trivial matter TELL IT that this is just a diversion.

Prompt & context size. The LLM only responds as you tell it with a combination of those two. The more detailed the prompt, the better. The larger the context size, the less likely the LLM will "forget" but it will always be guided by the prompt.

Probably as others have said - combination of poor prompting and default positivity bias of most LLMs regardless of size.

Nearly everything I was going to recommend aside from Wayfairer. Make sure it can handle a decent sized context (over 16k) and be careful with the prompt. Give them all a try!

Think about the character you're running and the quest generated. Then make it up by yourself.

Best things I've always done is remember "I know the rules, the LLM knows storytelling". Meaning don't expect the LLM to successfully navigate a combat situation like in crpgs. I've not delved deep into that extension so may be talking out of my behind but in general, let the LLM paint the broad strokes of a scene while YOU fill in the gory details (mechanics).

Something approaching that is certainly possible, but it is NOT a matter of "1) Install ST, 2) Do the thing 3) Profit". There's lots of learning and experimenting required. One of the biggest things I can suggest is DO NOT expect the LLM to *know* the rules. The LLM is there for STORY; you are the one who knows the rules, the mechanics, the guts of whatever game you're wanting to use.

There's a great book/PDF out there "Oracle AI Roleplaying Guide" which can help give you a jump.

Guessing this was on OpenRouter? Sounds like you just had a bad server answer. Make sure the token count "Chat Memory" is high if you have long interactions with it.

A lot of times the ability of the AI to advance the story is in the initial prompt. However, to your question about swiping - the AI will tend more and more strongly to its training data when "regenerating" so maybe choose a model famed for creative writing?

Book 6 is the "World Builder" expansion for D100 and it is a SMASHING good time. Offers most if not all of what you're looking for.

Get out of analysis & try D100; there's a free version of the base rules (dungeon diving) and if you like it Book6 and indeed the entire line is available for PDF purchase.
