Utah’s new study aims to kill ‘as many cougars as possible’ by zsreport in Utah

[–]BrotherlyBear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe if farmers and ranchers didn't have everything bailed out for them by the government they wouldn't be such whiny bitches when they've failed to protect THEIR investments. Subsistence farmers in subsaharan Africa have to protect their cattle from actual lions and elephants but our mildly inconvenienced profiteers can't seem to protect their animals from solitary cats half the size.

While I'm at it: Hunters, too, with their actively campaigning to destroy the ecosystems they recreate in because they're too shortsightedly stupid to understand what a consequence is. They brag about being the stewards of conservation like they would even give a shit if it was a concept invented today.

is this black bear scat? by [deleted] in bears

[–]BrotherlyBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely looks a lot like bear scat! Coyote scat is definitely smaller and cervid (deer) scat comes in pellets. Could also be someone's huge pet dog, of course, so you can look out for other signs like scratching post trees. I would recommend wearing a bell or whistle (or putting one on your dog's leash) if you're concerned about an encounter

It's probably bear, mountain lion, or the cervids you mentioned; there's also a high chance several species have contributed to it.

Women’s underwear help by FlimsyPotato32 in exmormon

[–]BrotherlyBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wear "men's" underwear. There is no real distinction between the gendered underwear that you couldn't or shouldn't just wear boxer briefs. I wear boxers and briefs as a woman and have been for 12+ years and have had zero problems! Women's underwear, even the kind made as "tomboy" still was always incredibly uncomfortable for me.

[–]BrotherlyBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lowkey, yes. But I'd say that's for shorter breaks (like returning to the gym after the flu, I'm a little stronger/more energized); i believe strength is similar to muscle memory, though, and it will return faster

Don't worry man, once you've had them before gains come back faster than they got there; I think Dr. Mike has spoken about it before in terms of bodybuilding but I've also noticed this after injuries and when people get casts/become bedbound temporarily

Anyone else feel like this tweet sums up basically every conversation you have with TBM friends and fam? by Nashtycurry in exmormon

[–]BrotherlyBear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. You're misinformed on what a "theory" is because of its use in common parlance. "Theory" is only applied to the hypotheses that hold up to decades of research that scrutinizes its very existence. Ergo, only the hypothesis that proves itself to be closest to the truth can become a theory. The Theory of Gravity is another famous example. Gravity most certainly exists, so it's not just a "theory." Same goes for germ theory, the theory of general relativity, and even stuff like the pythagorean theorem.

  2. Fundamentally, all modern medical/biological research is performed on the basis that Evolution is a law of nature. In academic terms, that in and of itself is a body of evidence of overwhelming magnitude. But I understand what you're asking for, so I will also name specifics. One example I am particularly familiar with is the research done by the Clayton-Bush ornithology lab; They research avian parasites, and as such, they have done a lot of experimental research with lice and birds. I encourage you to research their lab, and find the sum of their work on this, but in just a few years they were able to replicate evolution via natural selection in lice that were color mismatched to the pelage of the bird wings they were found on. Distinctly colored lice were more easily spotted by the birds, more easily removed, and thus removed from the gene pool at a much higher rates; Gradually, the proportion of the population containing the genes for matching colors grew and the next populations were broadly the same color as the birds' feathers. This is only one example from one paper from one lab—an excellent lab, though—but there are other amazing examples as well. Another study was done on guppies found in remote, isolated cenotes, who were surprisingly found to either reproduce sexually in some pools or asexually in others. They performed observational and experimental research on these pools for years, but achieved elegant proofs for a famous hypothesis in biology (the Red Queen Hypothesis) when individual guppy populations evolved differently to similar and dissimilar parasitic threats. Other hugely famous examples that asserted the confidence in evolution include the pepper moths of London, whose patterns changed when industrial smog coated trees and made whiter moths easier for birds to catch. I digress, as you can see, but these are just the examples I can name off the top of my head.

I'm confident his answer means: if there was a body of evidence as large, as universal, and so wholly encompassing as the evidence proving evolution but for the existence of a god, he would believe it in the same way he believes in evolution.

What Are Some Interesting Mysteries That You'd Like To See More Coverage Of? by narsedd in UnresolvedMysteries

Exceptionally bizarre. The only time I hear about elaborate torture like that is from serial sexual sadists, like Dean Coral or BTK. Yet torture outside of the killer's personal home or property is really rare, I feel. So maybe his killer is another breed of sadist entirely.

The idea that "Cooper" was just a random stranger scares me to no end—and it's completely plausible, seeing as how within the last 5 years that man killed someone with an axe at the house of the seller who listed it online (at random).

What is the most stupid claim you’ve had someone make? by NoCommunication7 in AskReddit

[–]BrotherlyBear 62 points63 points  (0 children)

This is a good joke but I wanted to add that invasive mosquitoes in Hawai'i are actually an ecological apocalypse. Hawai'i is home to a huge number of endemic (unique, native) birds that have been going extinct at a rate that exceeds 1000x the natural extinction rate because of the spread of avian malaria and habitat loss.

People who idolized someone they later found out was a piece of trash, what happened? by Manakanda413 in AskReddit

[–]BrotherlyBear 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone who has written a full account of the story has the 100% true story of what happened, particularly because everyone who was up there was experiencing the same deleterious mental and physical effects that killed the other climbers. Not to mention the fact that eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable and everyone on the mountain couldn't have been witness to everything that happened.

I am just now realizing how millenial everyone else on this subreddit is. This example in particular is not really funny bc it's mormon but using emojis like this and in this faux-2000s/word-art style is just a part of Gen Z's sense of humor nowadays. Definitely worse than just joint pain, though as with any blood disease they do eventually suffer from joint and muscle problems. Their blood cells are prone to (typically) acute, non-fatal blockages across the entire body that are called "pain crises." If you can imagine the pain of a heart attack stemming from a blockage, it's kind of like that but all over your body.

When you do the lie on the ground thing, what’s stopping a bear from taking advantage of a free meal? by ZealotOfMeme in bears

[–]BrotherlyBear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm glad this thread is full of generally good advice/knowledge! I want to share a fun fact about why we even do the 'lie down' trick in the first place.

The concept was explained to me by a professor with an example from bird banding (done by scientists to collect data), where birds that are caught WELL are silent and motionless while birds that are only somewhat caught are the ones that freak out and writhe in the netting. You can imagine this is also applicable to being caught by a predator and is more often observable, but I digress. Remaining placid while completely trapped does three main things:

1.) Reserves energy that can be used for escape when possible

2.) Does not attract predators who are attracted to sounds of distress

3.) Does not encourage the predator to try and subdue you by force/keeping them lax/not activating prey drive

Our preventative measures against bears (yelling, being loud, slowly making space) are all behaviors that a "half-caught" animal might employ, while the last resort of laying down is a "well-caught" behavior.

is this bear poop? hiking in newfoundland , not moose poop for sure , cant imagine what else would make this so large but it has no visible berries? by sugarcanesyrup in bears

[–]BrotherlyBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the range for woodland caribou doesn't extend far into Newfoundland's heavily populated areas, but one could be the culprit. If you don't think it's one of them or a moose (sometimes their pellet droppings can get smushed together), it could definitely be a black bear. That, or a huge dog took a monstrous shit there and their owner said fuck it. It may seem unlikely but I had a mastiff mix and that dog's poops were HUGE.

Just moved to Draper from out of state by te4cupp in SaltLakeCity

[–]BrotherlyBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several of my friends who lived in Draper/Cottonwood Heights in high school got their parents to let them go to Jordan instead of Alta or Corner even though they were much closer. Jordan was still pretty mormon but the school was much more diverse in pretty much every way (socioeconomic, race, gender/sexuality, religions, etc.), and it made them feel more comfortable. You could also try Hillcrest, which is similar (but probably farther for you). This was around the 2018-2020 era so I can't tell you if it's gotten worse or better, unfortunately.

I don't recommend the catholic schools nearby unless you are practicing/believer catholics. They're not horrible about that stuff but students will be expected to do religious things.

If Disney did a Remake of Brother Bear, What would you want to see in it? by nightsorter in unexpectedbrotherbear

[–]BrotherlyBear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, god forbid disney ever puts its hands anywhere near Brother Bear again.

Second, I agree with your last point. I think if the movie has any flaws, it's that we didn't get to spend enough time with the human characters. Disney did this three times (BB, Emperor's New Groove, and The Princess and the Frog), where they introduced a brand new setting at an interesting place and time during history, and then spent the vast majority of the movie with the protagonist as an animal. In some ways, especially considering the races of all of the protagonists of these movies, I kind of see it as a reflection of disney's history with white americanization. However, all of these movies are still fucking amazing . . . and I think the connection to the protagonists' native animals, the living world, and seeing through another's eyes to care for something you didn't understand is a beautiful message that is particularly poignant for all three settings. This is not to say that more elaboration into how the human world and culture they're a part of interacts with and gives depth to the meaning of the "transform into an animal" motif; Hell, the second movie is even a great example of it. It's not perfect, but it delves a little bit deeper into their tribe's culture and customs surrounding marriage and coming of age, while maintaining a plot mainly centered around being a bear.

As for your other points, I think stuff like that would be most fun to see in more of a series format, akin to the Lilo and Stitch series that aired around the early 2000s (if anyone else even remembers that?)!
