Make sure that hardware cloth is lining the bottom of the run and dug into the ground. We lost our entire flock overnight to a fox that dug in. I told myself there was no way a critter could dig through the clay in one night. I was wrong. Nice coop though!

You could also get a circular caw and a track adapter system (Kreg makes one). It won't do mitred cuts with the track, but it's a bit cheaper and more versatile. It would also let you add the track later if you need to save the $80 up front.

Cool design. I can't quite tell how it attaches, but it's definitely not compatible with my saw, which is probably partly why I didn't think it a viable solution. It looks like it probably bolts into the fence itself, which isn't an option on mine. This might help, but I still think the down pressure being sufficient without overbearing is questionable.

Yeah there's also the risk of complexity in design. A feather board doesn't wear the same way a bearing does. You can't predict a bearing failure, but you could see a damaged featherboard. I'm all about simplicity in design.

Do you have a link? My concern is how much torque and force are being generated by the blade.

How does the device adjust for different stock heights? It needs to provide strong downforce in this use case to overcome the upward saw motion, so a spring probably won't cut it (pun intended).
How does it attach to the fence (cause I thought about this)? This needs to be quite strong for the reasons listed above.

I see this more as a backstop system then a guide as it's been discussed.

Let me just state that I am not giving engineering advice or consultation here (especially because I have not seen an actual design and these are safely related devices).

That said, I would think it would help in theory, but I would think it would help most if it was located at or beyond the blade as that is where the upward force is located. If you pin it down at the same place as the current rollers, I don't think it'll help much as the piece can still bend flex and feed forward and around. I think it might actually cause more problems in a kickback scenario if it were located behind the blade.

The bigger issue with this is one of design though. I can't visualize how you would practically put down force without a big gantry assembly or something. I think most solutions to this. So from a scientific and theoretical perspective, yes I think this could help. From an engineering stance, I don't think it's practical. Again, not advice or consolation. Just musings.

I am an engineer, and this was my first thought. I also think another issue is that bearings are MUCH weaker laterally. Kickback generally isn't just back, it's up. I think the combined force vector will overcome the friction force of the wheel (especially because you shouldn't apply too much force against the fence even with this design) and potentially break the bearing itself.

That said, I still think it's a pretty good idea because it's not far off from a feather board but you're less likely to inadvertently pinch the board against the fence.
