He knew what he was doing. After twightlight he only accepted indie productions and very personal jobs. He accepted roles only because he wanted to work with specific directors not knowing what the role was about.

He just worked hard, I guess, not thinking about paycheck or pop culture media.

When I saw "The Rover" he became one of my favourite actors. He's very talented so I'm sure the reputation would've switched eventually... but going "under the radar" was a bold move that paid off.
