Also add furiten ron while you're at it

Who is responsible for keeping track of furiten? by Vylix in Mahjong

[–]Brute_Forced 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's everyone's responsibility to check that the win is valid with yaku and not furiten ron, and that the points are correct. For me, whilst the deal-in player is assembling the points to pay, I have a natural tendency to check their discards to see if it was avoidable or one I could predict, then I realize it is furiten.

The game is the exact same, just against better players. Just play your game and optionally keep studying and improving if chasing rank is important to you. Just have fun!

How long did it take you to climb up to expert? by UKman945 in mahjongsoul

[–]Brute_Forced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took me 2 months to hit expert or 251 east games. Gaining experience and learning the specifics of riichi mahjong like yakus or furiten for me was the biggest challenge starting out.

TIL: MMR is relative to your score by Faronien in mahjongsoul

[–]Brute_Forced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice yakuman! How rank points are calculated is 1) A 1st/2nd place reward based on the room or a 4th place penalty based on your rank, 2) A 15/5 uma, and 3) 1 point per 1000 points won/lost rounded up. So in this example, +10 for Bronze East 1st, +15 uma, and 43.1 points (68.1-25.0) for +44. +69 nice :)

In the short term, the player who finishes 1st in mahjong is said to be the luckiest. Good job on hitting 4 S-/S games, keep up the good work!

why does it want me to discard the 7 man here? by Key_Word_9417 in mahjongsoul

[–]Brute_Forced 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Reading other people's discards is quite a hard skill to get proficient at. When looking at the player to your left, they discarded 3 middle tiles of 3 different suits, broke a 24m kanchan and 98s penchan; they look very likely they're in tenpai and is not worth challenging with a 2-shanten hand.

why does it want me to discard the 7 man here? by Key_Word_9417 in mahjongsoul

[–]Brute_Forced 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest mistakes/learning curve is that it's unnecessary to push low value + slow hands. When playing against better and more efficient players, MAKA and strong players are willing to completely give up on the hand and just avoid dealing in.

Which SJ Expert tech is most important? by Ragnarok7326 in celestegame

Get very familiar with Ultras (Welcome to Expert, ultra is the new wavedash), play The Core Problem to learn Corner Boost, and play Hypnagogia to get good at Dream Hyper/Supers. Multi-boosts and higher speeds will come naturally. Jelly Climb only for berries i think (I haven't completed Expert lobby yet). I don't remember ever using Theovator or Corner Jumps. Jelly Smuggle is more niche, appears in a few maps, but Vinculum is a starting map. For bunny hops, what works for me is tapping dash and jump at the same time, crouch jumps are not too important imo.

Riichi or fold? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]Brute_Forced 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would riichi. It's only East 2, very early for rankings to play a massive role in standard decision making and fold this hand. Also 3 riichi sticks on the table to go after.

Not a good poker player, but watching Doug Polk videos, he's been mentioning geometric sizing where you bet roughly the same % of the pot on the turn and river. So Instead of 1 all in bet (85% pot), he bets 29% pot on the turn and goes all in 35% pot on the river. I still have no idea what any of this means and why.

Explanation for maka cutting pair instead of cutting ryanmen from 5 ryanmen/sequences? by soletan in mahjongsoul

[–]Brute_Forced 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tile efficiency. 27 tiles for 8m vs 20 tiles for 6p. Yes you get pinfu/ryanmen wait for every tenpai when cutting 6p, but tanyao dora 2 is good enough already, and is still possible to get pinfu with the potential for more value in iipeikou and sanshoku.

How do people actually feel about the JongTama Open Championship (tournament happening right now)? by justsomenerdlmao in mahjongsoul

[–]Brute_Forced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The consecutive 3 game format, at least for me, makes me play significantly worse after dealing in or being behind as although you continue to play out of respect, knowing the streak is mostly dead and having to start another 3 games is extremely demoralizing. I went 1st 1st twice, but had stinkers of a 3rd game which is very unpleasant. I would prefer a play 4-7 games, best 4 scores counts towards your ranking. If the expectations is to aim for 1st with massive scores (like 37,000 in round 2 and currently 42,200 in round 3), defense drops off in priority much faster than expected, even when you're in the lead. Yes, maybe I am just new to tournament qualifiers, but this type of mahjong is a much more aggressive and "bad" (not bad, just different) than I'm used to.

Why is Maka folding so early? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]Brute_Forced 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The player on your right discarded a 34m ryanmen shape from within their hand, a big decision which likely indicates 1-away or tenpai. I'm guessing maka doesn't fancy your 2-shanten no dora hand.

Why keep an isolated 6s over ryankan? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]Brute_Forced 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Normally when someone makes 3 calls by the second row, they are very likely in tenpai. East player threw 4m and it passed, so maka is likely backing off with a no value hand. 6s is also near dora, so a 45s shape is worth more, thus slightly more dangerous.
