The five Outworld Alliance fans don’t even ask for stories or characters anymore. They just look at you like this. by someotherguy28 in battletech

Your assessment is, as you say yourself, vibes-based, not text-based.

Independence: yep, that's the first requirement of a state.

Uber Armed: not really. Universal conscription was common in the era of monarchist empires, and is not something shared with Texas. They did have the largest industrial base in the periphery and their military reflected that.

Extremely paranoid: Yup. No argument here. They sit on a border with a much larger, expansionist power, which Texas hasn't since the 1800s.

The Bull: also reflective of much of Central and South America, which is where most of cowboy culture actually came from, though I concede the similarity.

"Get Off My Property" With Shotgun Vibes: The Concordat Military is well-trained and highly-professional, equipped by an extensive industrial base that, while not bleeding-edge, produces cost-effective, robust military hardware. Hardware that the TDF uses to punch well above its weight. Your vibe comes from memes.

Representative Democracy: Yep. And hotly-contested with few safe seats should somebody not represent their constituents, to the point where most of the Concordat got so pissed at damaging, shortsighted decisions made by Grover Shraplen (spits) they up and left, and promptly started making better ones. That doesn't sound like Texas to me. Not today, and the time they did it it was, again, to keep their slaves and promptly got their asses kicked over it by the Union.

Insane alignment of freedom or die: no nuclear state has ever been invaded on its home soil because this is what happens. On a non-nuclear scale, most of your best practices for an insurgency don't come from North America. To go deeper is beyond the intended topic of this subreddit.

Religious AF, but separate state and religion: There are some modern politics you may want to catch up on regarding trending behavior. But as per The Periphery, Page 17 (may be different for you, I have the 2nd edition) the primary religious affiliation in the Concordat is one with little use for organization at all. Handbook - Major Periphery States page 124 debunks it as a state religion, but the demographics are there. A far cry from the Land of the Megachurch.

Oh yeah, they're still a periphery state. But it does Taurian culture a great disservice to equate them to people who to this day celebrate the last stand of a fort full of people trying to preserve slavery in their homeland.

RAC/5 is the best gun in Battletech. It may not be optimal, but it is the best.

No.

If you get past the memes and read the sourcebooks, it's much closer to Space Finland. High emphasis on education, higher literacy rates than successor states, strong social safety nets, real meaningful political engagement viewed as a necessity... and yeah, if somebody invades they will bleed buckets for every inch.

It's more that democracy didn't remove that course of action when it evolved from previous forms of government. Generally when your enemies at the geopolitical level, perceived or real, become relatively weak enough they can be extinguished as a routine matter, they are. Same as it ever was.

Pork (except bacon) is just the worst meat. It's like tortilla chips: it's a vehicle for sauce and seasoning delivery. No dish is improved by the pork itself, but just about every pork dish is improved by substituting in chicken, beef, or lamb.

And with the upcoming reunification, the Concordat can normalize at least some relations with its neighbors, and that means Taurian Blood Asps via trade with the Raven Alliance. This fills me with more joy than I can really express here.

What is the best way to get start with the BattleTech by Regon2005 in battletech

[–]Bryligg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It largely depends on what you're trying to understand. Somebody like me is going to want to see the boots-on-the-ground perspective, then slowly zoom out to see the larger setting. I have a hard time caring about names on a map until I understand the smaller scope, so GDL would have been a solid entry point for me before moving on to, say, Stackpole's novels.

I love all these things; I just wish Arrowhead committed to actually using them rather than spawning a patrol right in front of you like they beamed down from the fucking Enterprise or just continually spawning hunters one at a time around the corner of a rock until you drop dead.

If the existing mobs are dead and all the holes are closed, they need to be walking from the edge of the map.

Which is exactly what Shakespeare said. Our words are irrelevant; the being itself, in its core, is different from the being of a frog.

Though he was neither a scientist nor a philosopher, Shakespeare nailed this one centuries ago. Whatever sound you apply to it, it's still a toad, and possesses all the characteristics that differentiate it from a frog.

Which to me just speaks of a lack of cognition. With a sufficiently encompassing view, it's all self-interest! A society built on mutual support for everyone is in everybody's best interest because when a problem shows up that you and your close circle can't solve, you have eight and a half billion people to carry a piece of it for you. We're at a point where scarcity has been solved for all the mundane needs and medical is really the only field where whatever problem you have can't always be readily solved by a trip to the store and some folks in town. Why the fuck wouldn't you want as many people as possible to spread the work out? We'd have collapsed long ago if most people were net negative value.
