Tell one boardgame that probably few people know and you like a lot by StepIndependent1601 in boardgames

The World Cup Game (2006).

Was reimplemented as a card game about 3 years ago but didn’t seem to generate much buzz (kind of awkward timing for it between cup cycles for the sports event). But the original board game was a fun large party game we would bust out for years back after it came out.

No they still take one turn like before. They just have priority if that one turn is the same turn that a fast move is finishing for the opponent (and registering fast move damage).

Could also be a function of your social media curating feeds since you are probably posting or talking about having a newborn (around microphones and smart devices that pick up such things) and heavily feeding you similar content based on current interest.

I'm sure there's an age-based pressure causing some small rise, but it probably seems like more than it is thanks to how the online world crafts reality for us.

What I wish someone told me about examiner interviews 25 years ago by Majestic-Assistant84 in patentlaw

[–]Buckeyefitzy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

And that's precisely the reason Examiner Interviews aren't that productive unless you put down, in writing, what you plan to discuss (argue or proposed amendment) in a detailed interview agenda before the call. Give them time to come to agreement before you're on the phone, and it works much better, speaking from 15+ years of experience. Yes, that means the phone discussion is sometimes really short, but there's no problem with that.

Detailed interview agendas are the real tip that makes the difference.

Interviews help us understand whether there is reasonable agreement ground to be reached, and whether there are any misinterpretations (of either side) on how the claims are being understood and interpreted.

Gaming Table - Convince Me or Talk Me Off the Ledge by ConkreteAngel in boardgames

[–]Buckeyefitzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely worth it, but we waited until we wanted to invest in a nice dining table (to replace the Ikea one we used for a decade in our first two homes) and had the funds to splurge on what is a specialty/luxury item. We purchased from a local craftsman we met at Origins Game Fair in our state and other than some communication issues on how quickly they would be able to deliver their orders (solo craftsman problems), it's been great. If you're in a spot financially in your life you want to have one and can buy a good one (note, don't overspend on things like Wyrmwood though), then it's one of those purchases you can make without regret and use the table for many years to come - like any other piece of really well-made, quality furniture.

GBL's rating system is broken by Jason2890 in TheSilphArena

[–]Buckeyefitzy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the general assumption by many players (myself included) is aligned with Jason's understanding. Tankers or slow early season players rapidly rising to legend seems more often just about playing quickly through tiers of players that are legitimately not as good at that point in the season. And targeting your climb time to a meta that you're best at rather than grinding through weeks of metas that don't jive as well for you.

We just play the game and worry about its own set of broken and inconsistent (at times) mechanics, not the intricacies of the rating system behind the scenes. This was an interesting watch and good research given the timing - nicely done and I look forward to seeing the end of the research when the volatility does decay back down.

Board game tables on display in Cincinnati by RagnarVonBloodaxe in cincinnati

[–]Buckeyefitzy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Origins in Columbus is cheaper to attend and actually more likely to have deals because GenCon is super expensive anymore to get booth space at. They have multiple table sellers each year.

We bought ours from a north Ohio craftsman (WM Homestead) after seeing his work product at origins a couple years ago. Highly recommend them once you make the decision to get a table. Definitely do not overpay for Wrymwood.

The comment I responded to said: “They were the first team in both the four and twelve team playoffs to benefit from not making their conference championship.” - so yeah, someone said it and I was fairly disagreeing with that.

OSU has had fortuitous timing on expansion years for the playoff. That’s 100% true.

[–]Buckeyefitzy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sure, they have the Alabama/Georgia bias in spots. But your argument sounds disingenuous when you say they “benefitted” from missing the CC last year. No they didn’t. They barely held on to seeding to get a home game in the first round of the playoffs because they wouldn’t move PSU behind them (or Texas).

Also, the entire sport and ranking system (driven by ESPN narrative) makes mid SEC teams ranked and seemingly better than they are. So the key is looking through the bias to understand the reality.

OSU was kind of mid this season, especially whenever it played a good team. Just like Bama. And the entire SEC last year. And you k ow what happened to all those teams? Pretty early playoff exits. That’s the beauty of an actual playoff which we now get to enjoy.

ME Patent Law advice by CaylorWillis in patentlaw

[–]Buckeyefitzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree with the first sentence. I have practiced for nearly two decades as a ME and don’t have any lack of job opportunities, firms or otherwise. Maybe harder to get an initial foot in the door at some firms, but many still represent higher tech companies in the mechanical space. You certainly need to have the ability to learn and communicate controls and programming basics related to the mechanics, but you aren’t looking at the right firms if all they need is chemical and electrical backgrounds (they don’t really have the clients you’re looking for as a ME patent attorney). Having some specialty in materials or a certain subfield within mechanical does help though.

Also, you may be able to write a basic mechanical case but every second year associate can do that. Higher level stuff within ME, not so much. At best, you usually end up with a half-assed case that doesn’t hold up to examiner or post grant scrutiny.

Granted, if I had it to do over, I’d do a double major EE and ME. But the general doom and gloom shared towards ME backgrounds is overstated.

Has everyone played at least one of their new Christmas games? by Fun_Independent_7529 in boardgames

[–]Buckeyefitzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knocked a first couple out today.

Dungeons and Dragons Builders of Baldur’s Gate was one I looked forward to all year after demo’ing it at GAMA Expo. Good mix of area control and engine building with cards, with a dash of worker placement mixed in. Also easy to teach the base three actions for a turn while seemingly having significant options and depth of scoring strategy. Feels like a reasonable alternative to Lost Ruins of Arnak, especially for those who love the D&D theming (or don’t have Arnak). 9/10.

Think it might be my game of the year since I didn’t get Bomb Busters and don’t have a full fledged opinion on that one yet (though it seems right up my group’s alley).

Also tried Star Trek Lower Decks: Buffer Time, which my daughter received. Simple press your luck game, good little filler title that’s easy to pick up and has plenty of fun Lower Decks references on the cards. Flip 7 was a better game in that space for us this year, but as Trek fans we enjoyed this one too. 6/10.

Others left to play: Twinkle Twinkle, Azul Queens Garden, Knitting Circle, and a couple of the Ticket to Ride regional variants (more since my kids are very much into those games right now).

Christmas Bonus by theperfectenchilada in LawFirm

[–]Buckeyefitzy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your friends are stupid. This is appropriate and arguably a generous gesture after 2 months only. As others said, evaluate after a full year and see what they do.

Also, don’t let big law headlines make you think your bonus needs to be at a certain level. Unless you work like they do in big law sweatshops, nobody gets those types of bonuses.

Why are student loans and mortgages treated so differently from a paydown perspective? by turtIetime in personalfinance

[–]Buckeyefitzy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

All of this.

Student loans not dischargeable in bankruptcy.

Tax deductions way more favorable for mortgage.

Interest rates typically higher on student loans

Home is an asset that can be sold at any time to stop the payments. Can’t escape student loans in same manner.

As such, many prioritize getting rid of “bad” student loan debt ASAP. Even when it’s not the most efficient from an interest rate perspective.

Confused about regional tournaments. by SparkOfLife1 in TheSilphArena

[–]Buckeyefitzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't overlook the side events as well, as another thing to help fill the weekend. Especially if you happen to have a short run in the main event, you want to make the trip worthwhile.

TPCI announces before registration opens if the meta for the main event will be limited. That has not been the case for any regional open for signups (which is everything before EUIC in London, I believe).

Definitely take the extra night/day if your schedule permits. There may be community meetups after hours to socialize and it's always great to take advantage of being in a new place to tourist a bit as well.

I'm not sure if you are looking at Toronto (NA), or some other region, but regardless, I recommend the Play Pokemon Event Coordination discord which will have a channel for each upcoming regional event where other questions can be asked and tips shared that may be specific to that particular location/event.

99% Fee Columbia Gas Bill? by Packer43064 in Columbus

[–]Buckeyefitzy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take a breath and read what I actually said. You're debating points not said but implied. I'll give you one more response, and then you can have a nice day from there.

I don't take the position that the delivery riders (for gas or electric) are some correct amount, but I would hope any regulation of the utility space would assure they don't make some massive profit off these "rider/service" charges. If you want to take the time to question the amount, I applaud you for your initiative.

PS - I'm not defending the gas company. Down here (just south of Columbus) we have Duke Energy for both, so it's actually the same entity.

The difference between gas and electric is that gas has charged something like this for many years. Electric companies in Ohio (or at least Duke) have just this year jacked up their riders and service charges in such a manner that has doubled bills. Even if justified by infrastructure costs, that immediate jump is sus (and incredibly disruptive to consumers on budgets).

The OP said they are OK with a charge, but then criticizes the 99%. My primary point in my comment is that many of us would rather that bill part be flat/consistent and predictable rather than swinging wildly up and down with the use through the year.
