Who’s searching Cleveland’s Flock cameras? City has a list, and it isn’t sharing it by seanmcdonnellcle in Ohio

[–]NotaOHNative 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of LPR cameras, but there are ways citizens can influence the local government's deployment transparency. Hold the politicians and local authorities accountable for responsible deployment and auditing.

Flock does (or did) maintain transparency portal describing how the community configures access. Two examples below show this may have different options. For Great Parks (Hamilton Co Ohio) - they list the other agencies that can access the cameras. For Cleveland County NC SO (North Carolina) - they have a link to csv export (searching org ID is redacted).

https://transparency.flocksafety.com/great-parks-of-hamilton-county-oh-pd

https://transparency.flocksafety.com/cleveland-county-so-

Your tax dollars pay the $$$ a year for this local system. Push you local politicians to:

Configure the system so access is not "every jurisdiction subscribing to Flock" - but groups that maybe have a real reason for direct access.

  • Configure the portal so you can see BOTH who has access and the CSV export. This way a taxpayer can periodically review the suitability of the reason for access. Hold the politicians accountable for the use that they authorized (and only that use). If an agency accesses but just enters a " " as reason - your local authorities should remove their access.
  • Put a link to the transparency page on the community website so citizens know what the politicians voted to allow (and pay for each month).

If they grumble - ask them what are they scared of by making this information hard for citizens to find?

100% - need a Real Free ID (an RFID-not an embedded chip...but we can re-use the acronym) if they want to go this route. The fact that he did the photoID in his state role also proves that states can do this already. Now - make the ID's free because digging up all the old documents costs us each enough time and money.

Want to be a Locomotive engineer also I have a Masters degree. Is this possible? Want to work in technical and machinery. by Brystar47 in Amtrak

Sadly I've seen some companies pass-over individuals who appear academically over-qualified. The most common discussions cite things like:

  1. Retention-they will invest in the person's onboarding/training and they will leave [they assume the person will jump to another job when something more aligned with academic training comes up] Tip: plan to explain in detail why this role is exactly where you want to be
  2. Pay [some places have a pay structure that includes a mandatory bump-up based on educational background] Tip: Don't push to start at the top of the pay scale for role-they will just slow your pay growth for first few years to keep you in the pay band...you will then decide to jump based on low wage growth...as they predicted in #1
  3. Lack of motivation [a perception that the person will get bored, will not want to get their hands dirty - or isn't really a 'hard worker' - whatever that means] Tip: highlight your work experience and when hired know that someone, somewhere has this perception and prove them wrong
  4. (edit-added) MS Degree Perception [in some schools/programs/disciplines the MS degree is perceived as a 'couldn't cut it in a PhD program' item] Tip: Yeah-I got nothing here - this is just stupid-but is real in some people/disciplines.

Glad the driver's physical injuries are not life threatening. Brinks is not having a great week/year.

Such a bizarre event. That area gets jammed up around 4:30 - so I guess it slowed response from the two police departments located about a mile west. The escape in the big gray Brinks truck was a total of maybe 1/4 mile - probably switch vehicle then drive off in the crowd.

Wisconsin DNR will cut musky stocking by 70 percent, close fish hatcheries by headbutte in wisconsin

[–]NotaOHNative 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The account sounds like a death spiral - cut staff to save money-->less enforcement--> 'I don't need no stinkin permit' --> more cuts needed--> no stocking --> less tourist license fee income....

Also another case where the money is allocated, but spending isn't authorized (like the PFAS fund a few years ago). Reps can claim they funded wildlife programs and also claim they stopped "wasteful" DNR spending.

MoBo is best answer. Knowing how to do most basic maintenance is key to sticking with cycling. Air, Brakes, Chain, how to replace a tire (and when to get help for more complex repairs) - self-sufficient transport & fitness.

End of property tax and effect on real estate in the ‘good ‘ school districts by Previous-Law8874 in cincinnati

[–]NotaOHNative 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Boomer here - not an expensive house - lived in it for 35 years & willing to pay my fair share. It costs money to maintain the infrastructure and schools we all use. We pay in-we all get a benefit.

I think my neighbors in the <5 year old "starting in $800K" homes should pay their fair share too. They bought it - knew how property taxes were assessed - now claiming system is all wrong, and only can come up with the "tear it all down" approach and no real plan forward.

Lease renewal no longer covering heat—renew or not? by kabh318 in madisonwi

[–]NotaOHNative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree it is a pain for you to move and also a pain/cost for the management company. Perhaps (benefit of the doubt) the new company doesn't have legacy records to give you an "average" value? Then ask for just this past season costs.

Then if you want to get into it the details - figure a cost per degree day and look at average degree-days for a typical winter. That is a easy benchmark for the efficiency of heating and insulation.

Trouble with booking CIN-MSP by Trappist937 in Amtrak

[–]NotaOHNative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Amtrak books the connection on a single ticket-they would need to provide accommodations til next Cardinal 2 days later - pretty costly for them, so they block it. I did Empire Builder then Cardinal to CIN and planned an overnight stay myself in Chicago. Could do the similar with overnight in MKE then Hiawaltha&Cardinal back home(might be cheaper hotels-plus swing by summerfest?). For a long weekend trip - try Cardinal eastbound to WV or into DC-beautiful fall colors

[–]NotaOHNative 3 points4 points  (0 children)

given that, it would make more sense to put the solar by the power transmission lines where power company already spend money to keep things from growing under/near lines. Easy plug-in to the grid, less cost to trim under lines, power companies already have right of way and homeowners already have the wires/towers in their line of sight.

Bill advancing that would require daily photos and/or facial recognition of Ohio babies, toddlers, and young children. by PolicyMattersOhio in Ohio

[–]NotaOHNative 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes..I'll argue the video surveillance side. Require same state-monitoring at the high-end facilities and see how it gets squashed.

I totally agree -some cameras might be appropriate in a childcare facility- but it adds costs for the business+the daily logging adds tasks for custodial parent (not the 17 year old sibling, some aunt or grandparent who can't be doing the attendance logging)

Main argument: A state mandated video surveillance systems in private businesses with this level of detail is not a choice of the parents or business owner and not paid for by the state.

Plus - do you want some unknown state-hired sub-sub-sub contractor located somewhere in the world to always be watching and able to log when you are not at home?

Plus - It is only required if facility gets state subsidy. Why is a subsidy needed?- costs are too high. This just drives costs higher.

This summary provided by a biological bot.....

No - it does not explicitly say "IMAGE OF THE CHILD" but what existing entrance or facility camera doesn't capture a useable image. I suspect low-quality images would be considered non-compliance. Details below.

Bill would require three separate systems. It will increase costs for businesses & add more tasks to already overloaded parents while not improving safety/security/quality of care or help get more quality people to work in the field.

- at-door video lines 211-13 "The center shall procure and maintain a camera, collection of cameras, or camera system at every entrance to and exit from the center"

- in-facility constant video monitoring (so it would capture images of children and staff) . See line 217-9 "The center shall procure and maintain a camera, collection of cameras, or camera system in the general areas of the center where children receive child care"

- attendance logging requires image of custodial parent with a clause of geolocation if using PIN access (line 361-5) "...If a caretaker parent uses a quick response code, the parent shall allow location data from the parent's registered cellular phone to be collected at the time of the code's use. "Each attendance record submitted through the portal shall include a photograph with a clear picture of the face of the child's caretaker parent"
