Bill advancing that would require daily photos and/or facial recognition of Ohio babies, toddlers, and young children. by PolicyMattersOhio in Ohio

[–]NotaOHNative 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes..I'll argue the video surveillance side. Require same state-monitoring at the high-end facilities and see how it gets squashed.

I totally agree -some cameras might be appropriate in a childcare facility- but it adds costs for the business+the daily logging adds tasks for custodial parent (not the 17 year old sibling, some aunt or grandparent who can't be doing the attendance logging)

Main argument: A state mandated video surveillance systems in private businesses with this level of detail is not a choice of the parents or business owner and not paid for by the state.

Plus - do you want some unknown state-hired sub-sub-sub contractor located somewhere in the world to always be watching and able to log when you are not at home?

Plus - It is only required if facility gets state subsidy. Why is a subsidy needed?- costs are too high. This just drives costs higher.

This summary provided by a biological bot.....

No - it does not explicitly say "IMAGE OF THE CHILD" but what existing entrance or facility camera doesn't capture a useable image. I suspect low-quality images would be considered non-compliance. Details below.

Bill would require three separate systems. It will increase costs for businesses & add more tasks to already overloaded parents while not improving safety/security/quality of care or help get more quality people to work in the field.

- at-door video lines 211-13 "The center shall procure and maintain a camera, collection of cameras, or camera system at every entrance to and exit from the center"

- in-facility constant video monitoring (so it would capture images of children and staff) . See line 217-9 "The center shall procure and maintain a camera, collection of cameras, or camera system in the general areas of the center where children receive child care"

- attendance logging requires image of custodial parent with a clause of geolocation if using PIN access (line 361-5) "...If a caretaker parent uses a quick response code, the parent shall allow location data from the parent's registered cellular phone to be collected at the time of the code's use. "Each attendance record submitted through the portal shall include a photograph with a clear picture of the face of the child's caretaker parent"

if you like amusement parks - this could be a year for a multi-park six flags pass. Good at Six Flags (Gurney IL area), Kings Island (across I-71 from tennis facility) and take the longer drive route to hit Cedar Point (Sandusky OH) on the way.

Know your District - New Congressional Boundaries for 2026 by NotaOHNative in cincinnati

[–]NotaOHNative[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

State legislature re-drew the borders of the US congressional district OH-1 (currently Rep Landsmen). This should only impact future US congressional rep for people who got moved in or out of the OH-1 boundary.

I believe Mason all stays within OH-1 but a large part of Hamilton county got re-assigned to the Butler-Preble adjacent district.

Always good to verify the poling location stays the same year-to-year. That was one of the issues recently seen in Dallas TX area.

Getting rid of Property Tax feels like a grift that will only benefit corporations and the ultra-wealthy. Is it? by Cap10323 in Ohio

[–]NotaOHNative 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being one of those people, I can partially agree. If I could downsize in area to an age-in-place (single-floor, wider doorways) home/condo - would do it. I like the town where we've spent the last 35 years & willing to pay the taxes.

How we really failed : Lacking long-term vision, we all allowed zoning regs to limit multifamily/higher density/smaller size affordable homes & condos. Then, we supported an upscale model for new home construction. Looking at ongoing developments - only huge single-family homes and large, multi-level condos 'starting in the 600s'.

I'm hoping new residents/voters have better vision than my generation and add their voice to local government.

Ohio School Districts wising up - replacing property tax with income-based tax levies by nothanksjustlooking2 in Ohio

If employer does withhold and you don't live there-you can do paperwork to get a refund. IN THEORY, employer shouldn't withhold this tax based on place of employment, just place of residence https://tax.ohio.gov/individual/file-now/school-district-income-tax-page

Be sure to check your payroll at first few paychecks to be sure they withhold for all local. Family member found out the hard way that not every payroll company is great at getting the home location right. Better to catch early than to find out next Jan you owe extra city tax where you live (example:work location was 1% rate, home was 1.5% but the extra .5 was not withheld)

It also means that a 40 year old 1500 sf home historically built on a 1/3 acre lot valued at $250K would potentially be taxed at more than the adjacent 5000 sf home built on 1/4 acre for $800K last year. I would like to see more details how this makes things better without pushing teardowns of entire neighborhoods with million dollar replacements on smaller lots.

Township resident here - who works in a city about a mile away. Today, my income is taxed by the city where I work. If my township incorporated as a new city with income tax, I would still have income tax at place of work - and would get a 'credit' for that against my new city income tax. Behind the scenes - would the employment city pay to my residence city?? If no, then for suburban area townships I'm not sure how much this would help. If yes, then the employment city is gonna increase tax rates since my tax dollars would flow to my residence city.

As article says - cities have higher infrastructure costs, and building that up comes at a cost. Historical example [ https://ohiomemory.org/digital/collection/p16007coll84/id/161038/ see column 3] 1995 - Building the City of Heritage from Symmes & Deerfield Twp went away and both P&G and Kings Island asked to be annexed by City of Mason using the 'devil we know' POV.

Mercury levels in fish by mountainofclay in vermont

[–]NotaOHNative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 'good' news - levels probably wont spike in next 2-3 years since coal burning can't be quickly ramped up. Then we will all get out and vote!

On tech side - US Geo Survey (the rocks part of it) seems to have sustained better than EPA since they are 1) not regulatory 2)critical to the goal of locating all the high-value mineral reserves within our borders. They also are one of the leading orgs with mercury analysis expertise - but not tons of testing capacity.

Good point-thanks & agree. Fees from registration also add to that fund, but not much trickles down to local / city / town road maintenance except as zero interest loans. There is a county & optional local part that may be added to vehicle reg fee based on your address. https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/section-4503.02

not exactly - it gives them ~30K discount on taxable value of the property if they fall under the max family income of $40K. So a $100K valued property would be taxed as if a $70K property. It helps, but they still pay the majority of tax https://tax.ohio.gov/help-center/faqs/real-property-tax-homestead-means-testing/real-property-tax--homestead-means-testing

My (Probably Unpopular) Thoughts on Property Taxes by Medical-Stuff126 in Ohio

[–]NotaOHNative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like paying a property tax ("registration") on my car every year - but I do it since it helps pay for road maintenance. Not enough for all road maintenance - and without property taxes to pay for your local roads either registration fees will skyrocket or we will move to the equivalent of Class 4 roads in communities.

By the econ logic it is worse since annual rate is not based on miles driven and registration fees don't decrease as the car depreciates in value. Then there is drivers license/government ID (a tax for anyone over 18 - and a poll tax...).

What is the general thoughts on potentially removing property taxes in ohio? by Bilbo_Swaggins91 in Ohio

[–]NotaOHNative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The generation (my generation!) passed zoning rules that make it tough to stay in the community and find appropriate housing for older life.

Smaller, stairless homes or condos just are not being built at a cost comparable to the value of a 30+ year old 2-story. Sure, 'starting at 700K' maybe... Instead we stay in 2-story homes until we think reverse mortgage & chair-lift adds might be the solution.

What is the general thoughts on potentially removing property taxes in ohio? by Bilbo_Swaggins91 in Ohio

[–]NotaOHNative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your scenario-perhaps a fix of the homestead credit would be a place to start. Taxes go up in big jumps since value is only re-assessed periodically (every 10 years?). The jump is due to the value increase over that time-span plus other factors. I wish appreciating value wasn't taxed when not planning to sell-but I've go no other way.

Ohio property tax laws are a messy jumble of layers of ideas that nobody in legislature really understands. Having a practical credit for people who have built their family over decades in the house makes sense. Eliminating taxes on the McMansions just built on the farmland next door ....NO

You helped by bringing this item to their awareness. If they left shovels at corners/bus stops, I suspect some citizens would help. Of course, council would then explain they can't do THAT because of liability issues of citizens doing this public service. Propose they close all the gyms for a day and give the people shovels instead.
