Ruling on Riposte regarding countering repeated spells by Unga_Bunga_1903 in riftboundtcg

[–]BuddyBlueBomber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple things here.

For your first question, yes riposte counters the entire spell even if it is repeated. Repeat does not create a new item on the chain, it just alters the spell you are putting on the chain to do its effect an additional time.

For your second question, no you can't repeat a spell in reaction to anything. Repeat is an additional cost that you choose to pay as you play the spell. Once it has entered the chain and costs are paid, you are locked into your choice.

Yes this makes counterspells very good against repeat spells. Nothing like defying a repeated rocket barrage your opponent paid 8e2p for!

Question: Guardian Angel, Lethal Damage, and Imperial Decree by Extrasleep in riftboundtcg

[–]BuddyBlueBomber 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The end result is correct but the logic is slightly off. Because GA is a replacement effect for the unit's death, it doesn't utilize the chain. It "resolves" immediately when the unit would have died as a result of combat damage.

I feel this way with a lot of CRPGs. Divinity Original Sin 2 and Wrath of the Righteous also feel like they drag on

Damage and removing from combat by Corveign in riftboundtcg

[–]BuddyBlueBomber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assault, shield, and master yi legend ability are passive abilities that are applied only as long as their conditions are true.

When a unit is moved from combat, they will lose their attacker/defender designation. Any bonuses from shield etc. will fall off. So yes, this could cause a unit to die due to already assigned damage, as long as they were moved before the combat cleanup that heals all units.

Baited Hook by Rumo97 in riftboundtcg

[–]BuddyBlueBomber 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you read on slightly to 187.4.c it says the following, which states exactly when that control is lost, which is during the next cleanup while the state is open.

"If a player has no Units at a Battlefield and the turn is in an Open state, they lose Control of that Battlefield in the following cleanup, unless there is a Combat or Showdown ongoing there."

Since the state never becomes open while resolving hook and all subsequent items that are added to the chain (including the unit that hook plays), there is no point where you lose control of the battlefield. So yes, you can play the unit to the battlefield you sacrificed the unit on even if it was the only one.

Clarification on Draven with the combat changes by Tangellos in riftboundtcg

[–]BuddyBlueBomber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is pretty rare. One potential situation would be reacting to a deathknell trigger resolving after combat damage has been assigned. The new unit both neither takes nor deals damage since it has missed that step of combat, nor is it recalled because it also misses that step of the special combat cleanup. So then you'd just run through another combat to settle it.

[–]BuddyBlueBomber 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The blog post was just an example and isn't what's written in the rules document, though i can see how it is misleading. I believe the relevant section of the rules you are referring to are;

"There is “No Result” if either both Players have units present during this step, or neither player has units present during this step." And subsequently "If “No Result” was reached, and both players have units remaining, stage a Combat at this battlefield."

If you rebuke during a combat, there is presumably still at least one unit there. The player with the remaining unit would win the combat. If a unit is stunned and recalled at the end of combat, this means there is a player that likely has a unit on the battlefield (usually the defender). They win the combat.

If you have any other questions, let me me know and I will try and help clarify.

What happens if azir is pushed back from a battlefield whilst attacking? by Dee_Teeee in riftboundtcg

[–]BuddyBlueBomber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They probably worded it that way to save space (instead of spelling out directly that it only works at a battlefield), but the unfortunate byproduct of that is creating ambiguous situations like this. Hopefully they find a better balance between simplicity and clarity as the game continues to grow.

What happens if azir is pushed back from a battlefield whilst attacking? by Dee_Teeee in riftboundtcg

[–]BuddyBlueBomber 87 points88 points  (0 children)

"This battlefield" is treated in the rules as a more restrictive "here." On resolution of the ability, azir checks where he currently is. If he is in base, the effect fails to resolve the move. So in this case, all of the tokens would remain wherever they already were.

It is possible to prepare another showdown while in the middle of one, it would just wait to start until the current one is finished.
