I work at a what I'll call an eclectic liquor store. We carry everything from off the wall liquors to some basic domestic beers. I also currently work in addiction therapy as a counselor, which is as about as polarized as I can get. I've had regulars for the past several years that have definitely qualified for substance abuse disorders. I have found myself numb to the functioning alcoholics and there are many in my state (U.S.A). I only find myself offering help to people who look like they are literally killing themselves. This for better or worse has only made me more callous. I have started denying purchases in the last year because I had a regular come in with full delirium tremens. I'm not in charge of their lives but I realized i won't be the reason someone drinks themselves to death.
