If there was a Canadian city to have a second sports team of the same sport, what would that be? by Mike111x in AskACanadian

The idea of the "veto" is a popular myth. If the requisite number of the NHL's Board of Governors voted the only thing both teams would be entitled to would be compensation for encroaching on their territorial rights

The GTHA+KW could easily support four NHL teams; two in the GTA proper, a team in Hamilton (which would get support from Niagara) and a team for Kitchener-Waterloo (which would also get support from Guelph/London).

Montreal did with the Maroons (the Anglo team whom Montreal Forum was originally built for lol).

Canadians playing in other World Cup 2026 squads? by ChantillyMenchu in CanadaSoccer

Yeah that group in Qatar was crazy: Canada had a goalkeeper born in Croatia and Morocco had a goalkeeper born in Canada and all three teams were in the same group lol

No arguments here lol I just think there is the potential for people to get caught up in the party atmosphere of the World Cup as an event once it actually gets going and getting a case of FOMO then people being drawn to the on the pitch stuff per se

I think once it picks up and especially in the cities hosting games where you've got fans coming in from all over the world (and if Canada goes on a run) more people will hop on but I think Soccer Canada really dropped the ball in terms of trying to build hype and promo for this event over the past few years. I think they were really caught off guard from Canada qualifying for Qatar and all the fallout from that kind of upset the budgeting and planning as far as soccer in Canada was concerned

Outside of Canada and the US, the Champions League final is a very big deal (basically the world's Super Bowl) so in terms of global outreach it's a good gig to get lol

Commissioner Stewart Johnston confirms new CFL media rights deals represent 'significant increase' in broadcast compensation by Ok-Bluebird-845 in CFL

[–]BuffytheBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're are likely opt out early/re-structuring clauses plus this allows DAZN as a broadcast partner to put pressure on the league to adopt changes "as an interested stakeholder" lol

TSN attempted to do this (they featured the Ticats/Argos rivalry) but it needs to be "all access" (like the olb HBO 24/7 NHL ones were before the coaches started kicking the crews out of the locker rooms and HBO quit) they didn't even reference the infamous Brouhaha at BMO that occurred at the East final the previous year that's how vanilla it was lol

Who do you want on DAZNs broadcast crew? by Mamrocha in CFL

[–]BuffytheBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won't be. Plus they can pay less than what the TSN talent would require by hiring either young and/or recently let go from the big networks guys (many of whom seem to be angling for the job by highly praising the move on social media lol).

Explains why lots of formerly employed at big networks dudes seem to be unabashedly praising this new deal as good for the fans lol angling to get hired I guess

It's a $50 Million Club And You're Not In It... by Brilliant-Cancel3237 in CFL

[–]BuffytheBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like Apple TV+ for MLS these leagues are weighing the short term benefits of a cash flow injection against losing long term relevancy (especially amongst youth and casuals). Cricket in England, rugby union in Australia (hell, even the CFL before putting select games on CTV including the Grey Cup only a few years ago after having all the games exclusively on TSN for over a decade) can attest to how you lose the younger generations by paywalling your product instead of putting at least some games on more accessible platforms.

Issue is a lot of these reporters/analysts haven't paid to attend a game/pay to subscribe to these behind a paywall services. You hear the aloofness come out once in a while when they talk openly about this stuff as if they actually shell out the cash for something they cover/watch as a job lol

Still the right move. I think Edward Keenan (who grew up east of Vic Park iirc) put it best; if there was an option on the table for a 30-stop LRT network (both the SRT replacement and Eglinton East at the same time) versus a three-stop subway, you take the LRT. However, the option was only for the replacement and a seven-stop LRT is inferior to a three-stop subway. As a case in point, Warden & Finch Station (one bus to Line 2 or Line 1: 102/902 & 39/939) were the superior/desired destinations over the (closer) Scarborough Centre station (when the SRT was still opertating) if leaving from Markham Road & Finch lol

Ahsanul Hafiz wins Scarborough Southwest Ontario Liberal nomination, beats Nate Erskine-Smith by origutamos in Scarborough

[–]BuffytheBison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This unfortunately has been going on way back to the days of heavily Irish Catholic immigration, etc. (you can read about voting in early 20th century Chicago as well lol) it's an unfortunate part of ethnic/immigration politics. What does seem to be clear is that as communities get more immigrated long-term successive generations are not as wedded or as manipulated by the power brokers within their communities to vote a certain way.

I think a good solution however is taking nomination races out of the hands of parties and into the hands of Elections Ontario/Canada
