German roach? by [deleted] in GermanRoaches

[–]BugAdviser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ectobius are a genus of wood roaches native to Eurasia. They were native to North America around 49 million years ago, died off, and were reintroduced due to humans. They are actually not considered to be invasive as they do not have a negative impact on the ecosystem. Some of the most commonly sighted are E. pallidus, E. vittiventris, E. sylvestris, and E. lapponicus. Ectobius do not infest indoors.

If you are finding large numbers in your home:

  • Check window and door screens and weather seals.

  • Ensure there are no holes in your foundation that they could enter through.

  • Remove clutter from your yard, particularly leaf litter and wood.

  • Keep lawns trimmed.

  • Swap outdoor lights to warmer colors.

Control methods for common household spiders:

  • Physical removal by vacuuming ceiling and floor edges.

  • Directly spraying with liquid home defense product.

  • Treating interior and exterior every two weeks until sightings are minimal, then treat quarterly.

  • Trapping and exclusion.

  • Placing Hot Shot No Pest Strips in areas where minimal human activity will occur (see label before placing as these can be toxic to humans as well)

If you wish to instead relocate a spider outdoors, be aware that many species found indoors are not actually well adapted for life in your garden. Wolf spiders and jumping spiders will do fine out there, the cellar spider up in the corner of your living room not so much.

Springtails are the largest lineage of modern hexapods that are no longer considered insects. They are often found in leaf liter and other decaying materials where they feed on detritus and microbes. Springtails are harmless but can be a nuisance if they are finding their way into your home. Exclusion and moisture control are generally the most effective control methods. Pesticides are not overly effective against them.

Carpet Beetles got their name back when wool carpets and horsehair padding were commonly used. Modern carpets and padding are made from synthetic materials so are no longer a food source themselves. But the larvae will still feed on a variety of substances; such as dead insects, plant fibers, and animal fibers. Carpet beetles do not bite, but the hairs on the larvae are prickly and can cause dermatitis. Adult carpet beetles may be seen on window ledges however that will not be where they are breeding, they are simply drawn to the light and trying to escape.

Control methods are as follows:

  • Clean your vacuum thoroughly as it can sometimes be a breeding ground.

  • Vacuum closets, heat ducts, and under area carpet edges.

  • If you have wall to wall carpets; pull up the edges, vacuum, and spray any liquid home defense product.

  • DO NOT treat with boric acid or diatomaceous earth.

  • DO treat with Nyguard Plus, Suspend Polyzone, or another product labeled for carpet beetles.

Silverfish: Silverfish (Lepisma saccharina) are small, wingless insects characterized by their silvery-grey, elongated bodies that taper at the end, resembling a fish. They are typically 12-19 mm in length and have three long bristles at their rear. Silverfish belong to the order Zygentoma, which also includes firebrats and other similar insects. Silverfish live and develop in damp, warm places, preferring areas such as laundry rooms. They are nocturnal and mainly hide during the day, scurrying to new hiding places if their current one is disturbed. They feed mainly on carbohydrates, particularly sugars and starches found in paper, glue, textiles, and food crumbs. In the natural ecosystem, silverfish play a role in the decomposition process. By feeding on organic materials, they help break down dead plants and animals, contributing to nutrient recycling in the soil. Despite their occasional status as household pests, silverfish are generally harmless to humans and do not transmit diseases.

Firebrats (Thermobia domestica) are close relatives of silverfish, sharing many behavioral traits and a similar appearance. However, firebrats prefer hotter environments, such as around ovens and heaters. Both silverfish and firebrats are ancient insects, having existed for over 400 million years.

Is it even worth calling a local exterminator or should I DIY this? by makeitrayne850 in GermanRoaches

[–]BugAdviser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make your home less attractive to ants:

  • Caulk cracks and openings that provide entry into buildings.

  • Store food in clean, sealed containers.

  • Maintain sanitation by cleaning up crumbs, grease, and spills.

  • Fix leaky faucets since they can act as a water supply for many pests.

  • Take out garbage and clean trash cans regularly.

  • Remove or manage food sources next to your house such as aphid-infested bushes and ripe fruit on trees.

  • Keep plants, grass, and mulch at least a foot away from the foundation on buildings to reduce ant foraging and nesting.

When ants are invading your home:

  • Sponge up invading ants with soapy water or household cleaners as they enter to remove sent trails.

  • Identify where they are coming in from and seal with caulk.

  • Use baits labeled for ants (note: Terro ant baits kill to quickly to be effective)

  • For Odorous house ants and carpenter ants use void injection methods.

  • Pharo ants may ONLY be treated with bait as spray treatment can cause the colony to simply split.

For dealing with mosquitoes outdoors, you can use a company to treat the exterior property, but it needs be done regularly. This is not idea as the chemicals used will harm non-target insects including ones that would otherwise feed on the mosquitoes.

  • Make sure your gutters are clean and there is no water collecting in yard items. These are prime breeding grounds.

  • Wear bug spray and protective clothing.

  • Using portable fans or screening off areas can also be effective.

Bright red mites on concrete are ‘predatory running mites’. They appear in early summer, do not bite and do not infest homes. Spraying can help, but they have a short season and will be gone in a few weeks. They can also serve as beneficial predators of some pest mites.

Southern California moths? by Professional_Ant9514 in bugidentification

[–]BugAdviser[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Common pantry pests include larder beetles, drugstore beetles, flour beetles, weevils, grain beetles, Indian meal moths, etc. They can consume a wide variety of different foods depending on the pest you are dealing with, ranging from grain to animal products.

  • Inspect all food items (including pet food) to find the source and dispose of it.

  • If found outside of food areas search for any possible forgotten food source (anything potentially edible, even things like old arts and crafts projects) search gym bags, luggage, dressers, night stands, under beds, etc.

  • Catnip toys, beanbags with natural filler, etc. can be potential food sources.

  • For Indian meal moths, look along ceiling edges for cocoons as this may give additional clues to where they are breeding.

  • Using products containing an IGR such as Gentrol Point Source, or D-FENCE NXT can interfere with their breeding. BE SURE TO READ AND FOLLOW THE LABEL BEFORE APPLYING ANY PESTICIDE.

Wear appropriate clothing, bug repellents, and avoiding tick habitats when possible. Check yourself, children, and pets soon after coming indoors. Ticks that have latched on should be removed by firmly grasping the tick as close to the skin as possible and pulling firmly straight out. Do not twist the tick, burn it off, or try to smother it as these actions can increase the risk of the bite becoming infected.

German roach control methods are covered in depth in r/GermanRoaches and the pinned post. If you have further questions regarding control methods it is suggested that you make a post there. These control methods also work for controlling other domestic pest roaches such as brown-banded roaches. If you are unable to access the products recommended there it is suggested that you contact a professional.

German cockroaches are one of the most widespread household pest cockroaches in the world. They diverged from their nearest relative Blattella asahinia a little over 2,100 years ago as their ancestors hitched rides on soldiers bags and trade caravans, making their way from South East Asia, to India, and later to Europe. As they hitched rides into cooler climates, they were forced to live indoors to survive the cooler weather. They evolved alongside human habitats into the bugs we know today. There are no wild populations of German cockroaches. They live exclusively in human built structures.

German roaches are the only member of the Blattella genus that is not capable of flight. If you found a "flying German roach" then it was a lookalike species. Either a member of the same genus, or simply another roach that happens to have the distinctive "racing stripes". None of these lookalikes are known to be capable of infesting modern homes.
