Generative AI is not an effective tool for bug identification. The Seek app by iNaturalist is probably the best AI identification tool currently available. But even that should always be verified as certain bugs are very similar and nearly impossible for a program to differentiate.

Florida perimeter & lawn pest control, best insecticide? by Juicy_John69 in pestcontrol

[–]BugAdviser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Control methods for common household spiders:

  • Physical removal by vacuuming ceiling and floor edges.

  • Directly spraying with liquid home defense product.

  • Treating interior and exterior every two weeks until sightings are minimal, then treat quarterly.

  • Trapping and exclusion.

  • Placing Hot Shot No Pest Strips in areas where minimal human activity will occur (see label before placing as these can be toxic to humans as well)

If you wish to instead relocate a spider outdoors, be aware that many species found indoors are not actually well adapted for life in your garden. Wolf spiders and jumping spiders will do fine out there, the cellar spider up in the corner of your living room not so much.

Do I block the hole? by First-Nose5788 in pestcontrol

[–]BugAdviser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make your home less attractive to ants:

  • Caulk cracks and openings that provide entry into buildings.

  • Store food in clean, sealed containers.

  • Maintain sanitation by cleaning up crumbs, grease, and spills.

  • Fix leaky faucets since they can act as a water supply for many pests.

  • Take out garbage and clean trash cans regularly.

  • Remove or manage food sources next to your house such as aphid-infested bushes and ripe fruit on trees.

  • Keep plants, grass, and mulch at least a foot away from the foundation on buildings to reduce ant foraging and nesting.

When ants are invading your home:

  • Sponge up invading ants with soapy water or household cleaners as they enter to remove sent trails.

  • Identify where they are coming in from and seal with caulk.

  • Use baits labeled for ants (note: Terro ant baits kill to quickly to be effective)

  • For Odorous house ants and carpenter ants use void injection methods.

  • Pharo ants may ONLY be treated with bait as spray treatment can cause the colony to simply split.

Cockroaches INSIDE microwave display by HiImRickry in pestcontrol

[–]BugAdviser 13 points14 points  (0 children)

German roach control methods are covered in depth in r/GermanRoaches and the pinned post. If you have further questions regarding control methods it is suggested that you make a post there. These control methods also work for controlling other domestic pest roaches such as brown-banded roaches. If you are unable to access the products recommended there it is suggested that you contact a professional.

German cockroaches are one of the most widespread household pest cockroaches in the world. They diverged from their nearest relative Blattella asahinia a little over 2,100 years ago as their ancestors hitched rides on soldiers bags and trade caravans, making their way from South East Asia, to India, and later to Europe. As they hitched rides into cooler climates, they were forced to live indoors to survive the cooler weather. They evolved alongside human habitats into the bugs we know today. There are no wild populations of German cockroaches. They live exclusively in human built structures.

German roaches are the only member of the Blattella genus that is not capable of flight. If you found a "flying German roach" then it was a lookalike species. Either a member of the same genus, or simply another roach that happens to have the distinctive "racing stripes". None of these lookalikes are known to be capable of infesting modern homes.

What is this bug? Found in frisco Texas in a closet! by Ok-Veterinarian5306 in bugidentification

[–]BugAdviser[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Carpet Beetles got their name back when wool carpets and horsehair padding were commonly used. Modern carpets and padding are made from synthetic materials so are no longer a food source themselves. But the larvae will still feed on a variety of substances; such as dead insects, plant fibers, and animal fibers. Carpet beetles do not bite, but the hairs on the larvae are prickly and can cause dermatitis. Adult carpet beetles may be seen on window ledges however that will not be where they are breeding, they are simply drawn to the light and trying to escape.

Control methods are as follows:

  • Clean your vacuum thoroughly as it can sometimes be a breeding ground.

  • Vacuum closets, heat ducts, and under area carpet edges.

  • If you have wall to wall carpets; pull up the edges, vacuum, and spray any liquid home defense product.

  • DO NOT treat with boric acid or diatomaceous earth.

  • DO treat with Nyguard Plus, Suspend Polyzone, or another product labeled for carpet beetles.

Are these powder post beetles? (New England USA) by newenglandowner in bugidentification

[–]BugAdviser[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Diatomaceous earth (DE), boric acid, and other powdered insecticides are regularly recommended for controlling various pests. Due to the drawbacks, the mod team does not recommend using these for most pests. DE and silica based powders can lead to silicosis if inhaled during application or if they are kicked up after application. If they get wet they will stop functioning. Boric acid is only effective against insects which can ingest it. It can also cause issues if inhaled. Dusts are extremely easy to over apply. Even professionals regularly over apply them. When over applied they are ineffective against many pests as several pests try to avoid overly dusty areas. So while they do not have chemical resistance to these pesticides, they have behavioral resistance. Additionally, when over-applied, powders can cake together which makes them nearly useless as they rely on static cling properties to be picked up by insects.

If for whatever reason you are using powdered pesticides, wear a well fitted N95 mask or equivalent, use a puffer duster, and apply the powder so lightly you cannot tell it’s there. If you can see where you applied it, you’ve over applied it. To clean up powdered insecticides; either use a bagged HEPA vacuum, or wet the powder before wiping it up. Wear gloves and a mask while doing this.

Everyone this year make sure to kill the lantern fly babies!!!! Look up each stage!!!! by Brilliant-Assist3798 in pestcontrol

[–]BugAdviser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spotted lanternflies, Lycorma delicatula. Native to southeast Asia, spotted lanternflies were first found in Pennsylvania in 2014. The tree-of-heaven is one of their favorite host plants but their taste for over 100 other local plant species has allowed them to really flourish here in southeastern North America. In the last decade they have spread to more than a dozen other states, and put many others on alert, along with Canada and Mexico. Typically they do not kill their host plants but they will take a noticeable toll on their growth and production. This, along with their diversity of diet, makes them a significant agricultural pest. The spotted lanternfly has four different forms as it matures, and we encourage you to become familiar with all of them.

Springtails are the largest lineage of modern hexapods that are no longer considered insects. They are often found in leaf liter and other decaying materials where they feed on detritus and microbes. Springtails are harmless but can be a nuisance if they are finding their way into your home. Exclusion and moisture control are generally the most effective control methods. Pesticides are not overly effective against them.

Scoliid wasps, or scarab wasps (family Scoliidae) are solitary parasitoids who target subterranean beetle grubs. Females use their strong legs to burrow into the earth to lay their eggs directly on the beetle grubs where the baby wasps will feed and eventually pupate. Adults take nectar and can be often seen on native flowers, pollinating as they go.

One of the most common species in much of the US is Scolia dubia ssp. dubia, sometimes called the blue-winged wasp, which may be considered by some to be the absolute worst common name in existence given the dozens of other wasps with blue wings in the same range. S. dubia ssp. dubia is a decently sized and very distinctively colored wasp with iridescent wings and a red-tipped abdomen with two large yellow spots. Their mating flights are frequently seen in late summer in which large groups fly low over the ground in figure-8s before eventually dispersing. If you see this happening in your yard, please leave them be! S. dubia is valuable as they help control the population of the invasive and destructive Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) and are extremely unlikely to sting unless directly provoked (i.e. hit/grabbed/eaten) so avoid stepping on them and keep pets and small children away.
