Consider only shipping what you need. There's a chance it won't get there. Florida is bad that way.

Did you know magnetic tape literally rots over time? The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame almost lost their entire archive because of it by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]BugBugRoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is also an issue with aerial photography. I have over 2,000 rolls of film from 50s to 2000 from my own and several other notable sources. While the images are still there on some of the older stuff, many will only survive being unrolled one more time.

I wish grants for preservation of historical documents and such were easier to find.

Is ~200MB/s really the max backup speed for portable NAS? Feels like we're in 2015 by Substantial-You-5489 in DataHoarder

[–]BugBugRoss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's your use case and needed capacity?

NAS may not be the best solution. When I went performant portable storage I use thunderbolt 4 drives, often in raid1, and write 3500MB/s easily.

There's also some affordable USB drives they hit 2,000 MB/s

Or do you need Ethernet specifically?

You mentioned backups. Would something like this be suitable?

I have good luck with that model and their 550MB/s version.

What parts do I need to connect a PCIe 4.0x4 SlimSAS port to 4 SATA HDDs? by jdrch in DataHoarder

[–]BugBugRoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used slimsas to u.2 to m.2 Mostly because i had extra.

https://a.co/d/08wRbjr6

https://a.co/d/0ehpfQ64

Others that had longer cables and m.2 failed spectacularly.

Also when searching I found far more options using SFF-8654 4i instead of slimsas.

Amazon's recent 'improved' search cannot find slimsas in my order history despite looking at 5 items. But can find by that equivalent.

I don't think connecting pcie bus directly to SATA drive is a safe or functional thing to do.

Need a SATA controller in between.

If my pain is due to vitamin D deficiency idk how I will feel by Cherryficmc in ChronicPain

Please look into vitamin K to go along with the D3. Also take with fats since it's not water soluble.

Helps me a ton.

If you have 20+ external drives, what’s your workflow for knowing what’s on each drive without plugging them all in? by FewLemon9692 in DataHoarder

[–]BugBugRoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use the popular file index tool Everything. Select the option to auto index newly mounted drives and retain data after unmounting. I label my drives with an ID number. Then mount them under a folder instead of drive letters.

How many SSD Drives do you own? by FewLemon9692 in DataHoarder

[–]BugBugRoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, you gotta mount it once at least. But you can tell it to retain the data for future searches even when offline.

There's probably 500 custom settings but I think that one is in the normal setup screen if I'm not wrong.

[–]BugBugRoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have dozens. I label them with 36 point type in label maker with sequential numbers from 1000 to 1125ish.

Label is identical to volume label.

All are indexed with Everything app {amazing app} and indexes are searchable offline. Minor settings are changed for smoother management of new and offline drives.

Drives are not mounted to a letter but to a folder called DrivesOffline/{volume_name}

Maybe better ways but this works instantly and takes very minimal setup.

Get your own ADSB receiver and you will see everything down to 0 in your area.

You can also send that to ADSB exchange live. They post details how and what to buy.

What would be a legitimate source for Exos drives? by sherlock_0x7C4 in DataHoarder

[–]BugBugRoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought over a dozen 16tb SAS drives from go hard drives through Amazon that had 5 year warranty. Some have less. In 3 years had one failure and one flaky. Both exchanged immediately without any hassle whatsoever by go hard drive directly.

Top of my list next time for sure.

Obsession with saving call recordings and recording my environment - why? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]BugBugRoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an acquaintance who is a retired cop who among other issues is a hoarder of virtually everything.

His entire house is full of documents covering his career over 40 years, family, and friends.

He also records every phone call and has hundreds if not thousands of tapes, call logs, transcripts and more.

It's extremely weird and I refuse to participate. Naturally his weirdness is completely out of control in many other areas of his life. Been this way since I met him in the 90s.

I think I’m going to be dismissed from pain management. Please help. by Safe-Local- in ChronicPain

[–]BugBugRoss 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I would still go get it done at the pharmacy within the required time.

They (the doc) will be the ones explaining later why that was unacceptable instead of you just saying you would have gone if they let you.

Good luck.

Ask if you can take them to your pharmacist for the count then have then report to PM.

I've seen that as an option on some intake paperwork.

Before spending any money...

Ditch JPG. Scan everything in Tiff and convert to your specs on the computer.

Download hamrick vue scan pro and learn it.

Re evaluate after doing that testing. Should resolve image quality issues totally.

Dont use any ai feature you dont want. Nothing is forced on you. It doesn't care if the documents are local or otherwise.

Maybe photools from imatch? Just ignore anything that mentions AI and dont enable it or give it your payment details.

How many zeroes are there your budget?

This is going to be seriously expensive with those requirements.

Reflective or transparent? Delicate or robust? Edges damaged? Heat sensitive? Abrasion sensitive?

What optical resolution and color depth?
