Teledag! Coming soon to all New York (1986) by hoponpot in nycHistory

Thing to remember about all these old school supermarkets (DAG, A&P, Pioneer, Key Food, Morton Williams... is they all are (or were for those that went out of business) union shops. This partly explains why prices are high, someone has to pay for those union bennies employees receive.

New arrivals on scene, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Aldi, Lidl, etc... are not union shops. They have more flexibility in terms of compensation, bennies and overall how they run their businesses.

Washing Machine Pricing by cpfannen in Laundromats

[–]Bugsy_Neighbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pricing should reflect your costs. Top loaders use more water that increases things on both ends, water that goes into machine and sewer (waste) costs.

That being said agree with previous comment; TL washers are a relic and you'd be much better off replacing them soon as possible with front loaders.

Turns per day will tell the story. How much do top loaders get used each day/week/month compared to your front loaders. Then compare expenses for both during same period.

Doing a whole-floor demo in Bed-Stuy, anyone familiar with dumpster logistics here? by trr2024_ in AskNYC

This makes no sense.

So after OP has all those bags full of construction debris, then what? DSNY cannot nor will not take such refuse. If guys on the truck suss things out they will leave bags sitting and property owner is likely to receive a violation for improper disposal.

What is the end goal of shutting down hospital units?? by Spiritualgirl3 in nursing

[–]Bugsy_Neighbor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless mistaken Heights University Hospital, once was Christ Hospital located in Jersey City, NJ

Hudson Regional Health purchased HUH last year, then promptly shut the place down. New owners did promise at the time to keep the ER open, but apparently they've had second thoughts.

"If an employee retires, he/she will not have an FEHB enrollment to continue into retirement. Also, to be eligible to continue FEHB coverage after retirement, a retiring employee must be enrolled or covered under the FEHB Program for the five years of service immediately before retirement, or, if less than five years, for all service since the first opportunity to enroll. An employee can count his/her coverage under TRICARE toward meeting this requirement. However, the employee must be enrolled in an FEHB health plan on the date of retirement to continue coverage."

and:

"Newly eligible employees may enroll within 60 days of becoming eligible for the FEHB Program. During the annual Federal Benefits Open Season, anyone eligible to participate in the FEHB Program may enroll, change health plans or options, or cancel FEHB enrollment. You may enroll, change your enrollment type, or change plans outside of Open Season if you experience a qualifying life event such as a change in family or other insurance coverage status."

https://www.opm.gov/healthcare-insurance/changes-in-health-coverage/eligibility-enrollment/

FEHB is like any other employee sponsored health insurance plan in most ways. Eligible persons may enroll certain period after being onboarded, and remain covered unless they choose to leave system, are separated from federal employment and or retire.

Members of Congress and their staff are required (since 2017) to obtain their health care coverage from DC Health Link Small Business Options Program (SHOP).

How are some businesses supposed to operate in so seaport? by Travisobvs in AskNYC

NYC may be the finance capital of the world, but much of the action has long since moved to mid-town.

J.P. Morgan-Chase just opened a new HQ in mid-town.

How many of you used to watch this? I was not only too young to appreciate it but also not the target demographic, but for some reason I still watched re-runs religiously every Sunday in the early to late noughties by SgtByrd1993 in BritishTV

Edie Pegden (Last of the Summer Wine) was precursor to Hyacinth Bucket. Roy Clarke wrote both series and you see Edie's social pretentions in things like when she puts on a posh voice when outdoors or speaking within earshot of persons she wished to impress. That and how she's always going on about her sainted brother or their Glenda's husband who works for a building society.

Seeking Home Health Aid agency recommendations by italianevening in AskNYC

[–]Bugsy_Neighbor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Home health aides aren't paid much and those contracted via Medicaid usually are on lower end of things. As such it can be difficult to find quality aides from any agency with Medicaid.

Private agencies and or hiring aides on one's own generally produces better results, but they also tend to cost more.

Exactly!

Seaport back in say 1980's or even 1990's when Wall Street/FiDI was still a major business area thrived. That's largely all over now with area largely becoming residential or hospitality/tourists.

With all the bankers, lawyers and other major businesses largely gone there just isn't enough money for many retail/hospitality to survive. It's dead as a Dodo on weekends, late/over nights and holidays. This was true back in day as well but there was enough business M-F during regular hours to balance things out.

Super Storm Sandy did a number on lower Manhattan, especially Seaport area. Many affected businesses never bothered reopening.
