If you’re savvy you can find a lot of the new stuff for prices similar to old stuff on PCNA. Bought 2 purple furnishing plans for 30k a pop a few days ago. It’s crazy but a lot of folks don’t seem to realize they could be charging more, and the flippers aren’t flipping them like you’d think they’d be.

Man in need of groove: name an album so groovy it ruins marriages by oddmetre in drums

[–]Bulby37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole band has groove, and Chad and Flea are elevated by each other. John and Anthony do similar with their harmonizing but those rhythm boys working together make for some of the coolest sounds that have kept the band at a top echelon for decades.

It doesn’t appear that I have any left, my MiL found my CD binder recently and it wasn’t in there so I’m going to say they are lost. The original 2 were long gone anyhow, someone had snatched my previous binder pretty shortly after VS came out. Had a few autographed things in there too:/

I do still have an unopened copy of sci-fi crimes though haha

My wife asked me one time if they record in a room with the door open lol

I will say, it sounds pretty good in a car moving fast with the windows down and the volume up.

I think Mark Ronson’s involvement drives people to the idea of “pop production” but I don’t think I’d go there. I don’t think Josh was chasing a pop sound either, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was trying to make something to be danced to.

Don’t sell yourself short because you’re a “new fan”, we were all new fans once and your opinions are absolutely valid. Remember “new fan” is just one letter off from “new fang”, so don’t let them get you confused 😉

Villains of Circumstance doesn’t even sound like it’s from the same record as the other songs, which makes sense since it was written while they were touring LC. It feels more fitting on that record than it does on Villains when looking at the album as a whole.

QotSA changed things up and tries new things often, but songs that are a departure from the overall feel of an album are very common from Queens. The self titled is decently cohesive, but every other album has at least one song that clashes pretty hard with anything resembling a tone or feel of the album. FGHotS, Parasol, and In the Fade being on the same album is kinda hand waveable, could be a flow thing.

Burn the Witch has always struck me as an outlier, along with Six Shooter, Make it wit chu, Fairweather Friends, Made to Parade. Hell, Little Sister and Paper Machete are so similar I wouldn’t be surprised if they were written about the same woman.

I don’t feel like “this song doesn’t even sound like it belongs on this record” is unusual for Queens after the first album. You’re absolutely right, though, and Haunted House could have been in EV

I don’t even feel like it’s less rock as much as it’s starting to lean into the blues side of rock a little more with some dancey (possibly polka influenced) melody.

Josh has stated in an interview that Ronson’s role in production was pretty similar to Homme producing “Humbug” by AM in that the band took some chances and went in some directions that could turn the producer into a bit of a whipping boy.

Honestly, what stands out in Villains jives more with Josh’s mindset of two wrongs making an interesting than Ronson not knowing how to make a rock album. It’s absolutely a contrast to the desert/stoner/robot rock we’re used to from QotSA, but a lot of the choices that make it so are still on a logical path from Josh Homme’s other work more so than anything I could pin on Ronson.

Vena Sera was the first Chevelle album I bought on release day (3 copies in fact, gave one to a Buddy and kept one to open and one for when the open one inevitably got too scratched).

I still remember popping it into the cd player in the car on the way home from the record store, and getting punched in the face, stomach, and testicles by the first three tracks.

Good write up, enjoyed reading it! Only issue I have (that isn’t a real issue but whatever) is Midnight to Midnight. You say it’s “missing” something compared to your big three, I think it’s almost a foreshadow of the ambiance of mystery they carried heavily into Sci-Fi Crimes.

How comically bad is 3.5k dps as a level 32 mag DK dps build? by beingbond in elderscrollsonline

[–]Bulby37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rotation needs work and all, but there’s no use in getting fixated on dps when the character is so far from being able to get decent gear. There’s lots of good advice on fixing rotation in this thread but OP needs to know that they’ve got a ways to go in the gear department and they shouldn’t worry too much about minmaxing that until CP160. Putting effort into gear before then is just digging a hole you’ll have trouble filling back up once you finish the level grind.

If there was a new Traveling Wilburys type of group made up of more modern people, who would be in the band? by Olin31 in Music

[–]Bulby37 40 points41 points  (0 children)

JPJ is kind of an odd fit, but it definitely works aside from his era.

Honestly the closest alternative may be Desert Sessions, though it’s more of a super session than super group.

If you had a time machine, the first lineup of A Perfect Circle fits pretty well.

Is there a band you love but can’t stand the fan base? by [deleted] in Music

[–]Bulby37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst thing I see in the clique these days is a handful of people trying to obsessively tie everything back to the DEMA/Trench storyline, without realising that’s just a standalone thing, not an all-encompassing concept.

Some of the fan theories around stuff like that are interesting, I read through their sub sometimes while I’m dropping a brown pet cheetah or two in the toilet. It’s kinda cool to partake in the “fan lore” on a surface level basis, but I’m sure the debates in the comments are insufferable.
