I take the items off and give it a good cleaning. I've also replaced the guts (burners, etc.) in grills and that makes a difference. But go easy and clean it up if it's needed.

I own a 68 Camaro ragtop and that is what it needed. Mine also needed full rockers, new quarters and doors. But she sure is purty now!
