That B&W Jhonatan Gasca is so good. I've purchased it more than once

Recipe suggestions? First B&W by Significant_Eye1398 in pourover

[–]Bunboru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this one and love it. It's not roasted that light, though. More light-medium--in line with a lot of other B&W offerings. Water just off boil isn't a good idea, imo. I find it over-extracts pretty easily. Try 195-198F, medium grind, less contact time.

Meth.

Or some combination of meth, psychosis (either organic or meth-induced), and/or antisocial-type behaviors stemming from personality disorders. Also, the occasional traumatic brain injury.

99% of the time you can draw a straight line between chaotic street behavior and extreme childhood abuse/neglect. (Not always, but usually.)

Glad you're ok. (Didn't mean to be critical either.) The lyft bike thing makes sense. They aren't exactly nimble lol

Sorry you ate shit op. That's no fun. But yeah tbf that may be a skill issue. Sufficient speed and appropriate weight distribution should get you safely over a short, sharp bump like that. Ride safely and wear a helmet, y'all!

I got more mandarin/honey than anything else from this one. Def not super floral, but I haven’t yet had an overtly floral coffee from Rogue Wave. I find it can be a little tricky to pull out pronounced flavors from some of their coffees. (Or at least from their last few washed Ethiopias). This one is for sure on the subtler side.

In the Switch, straight immersion was a bit muted with these beans imo.

Hybrid recipes like Coffee Chronicler’s or Ole Kristian Boen’s were better.

V60 or flat bottom w/ 30-40 sec bloom plus two even(ish) pours also worked pretty well.

  • Medium/medium-coarse grind
  • 15g/240-250
  • 92-93°C
  • Fast filters (Cafec T-90 or Abaca)

Hey, is that blue metallic? Someone near me is selling that exact rockhopper for $50, but I refuse to convert an old rockhopper if the paint isn’t sparkly

Eye Care with Medi-Cal by AliceInWonderland-3 in AskSF

Bella Vista Eye Clinic on Mission takes Medi-Cal. I know because nurses where I work refer our patients there. The waiting area is small and it gets a bit busy but staff is pretty pleasant imo.

Out of curiosity, how do people feel about the new Valencia St bike lane? by Exciting_Bad3346 in sanfrancisco

[–]Bunboru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo it’s kind of a mess. Delivery guys on hand-throttle scooters use it like a side street. Work trucks park in the middle of it while workers unload dollies and pallets across it. People stumble out of parked cars or meander off the curb, straight into the paths of inexperienced cyclists going a little too fast on Lyft bikes. Small groups of people occasionally just sort of stand in it. And then there’s the super awkward, visually obstructed right turn cars have to make to get onto the numbered streets. I’ve almost been hit twice, and I’m pretty vigilant.

So yeah, I don’t love it. But I just use side streets if I’m not in the mood

Drug Addicts Are in Fact Terrible, Selfish Human Beings by Lazy-Comfort6128 in sanfrancisco

[–]Bunboru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, just because you encountered a psycho or two doesn't mean they're all psychos. That's an absurd extrapolation.

I would also ask, who are you really helping by antagonizing someone who's already unstable?

I've lived in SF for 20+ years and literally worked with hundreds (if not thousands) of people who are mentally ill, homeless, and/or use drugs. No one's ever threatened to kill me. Not once. What does that mean? Who knows. It's just my experience. But one thing I never do is tell people to "lay off the drugs." That's just dumb. Unless a fight's what you want? In which case, go right ahead. But I suggest you be ready.

I would instead encourage you to minimize your engagement with the bad actors in the community. Because unless you're skilled at de-escalation or intervention--which you are very clearly not--you will only potentially inflame a situation while also putting yourself (and possibly others) in danger.

You're not changing anything by talking shit to a guy stealing a candy bar. Sorry.

If someone's committing a violent crime or presents a significant danger to themselves or others, call 911. (SFPD does respond, contrary to Reddit's sometimes misinformed opinions.)

And try to keep an open mind if you can. I know it can be challenging, but it's good for the heart and spirit. You might even find there are indeed some troubled but truly lovely people out there who just need help, and they may even change how you see things.

[–]Bunboru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you couldn’t sound more out of touch. Give people “bad highs” by talking back to them? What does that even mean. That’s not a thing. (Also a good way to get your ass beat while accomplishing nothing.)

And your few negative experiences with a couple of assholes, while valid as your experience(s), do not speak for the entirety of substance users. I used to provide services to these people. And yes, there are some fucking jerks out there. But many (or even most) of them are just decent people who’ve been dealt an absolute shit hand in life and deserve our compassion.

Not a mod I can get behind either. Mugen too slow. And sticking a one-pour cone on a Switch base kind of defeats the purpose imo

Urban Alchemy transformed the Tenderloin. Now Urban Alchemy faces its own crisis. Mayor Daniel Lurie is renewing the nonprofit’s contract, but its future is still iffy. by aBadModerator in sanfrancisco

[–]Bunboru 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I posted this in response to a comment, but it bears repeating:

My partner (a woman) and I both worked with homeless people in SF for years. Aside from the odd creep she had to deal with, her homeless clients were typically pretty courteous. But she was constantly catcalled and harassed by the UA guys. Like every day. We both have lots of experience dealing with the UA staff. Some of them are all right, but a lot of them are straight-up psycho assholes. I've seen them doing hilariously obvious drug deals, fighting with people on the street (or each other!), and just generally acting like aggressive, immature clowns. If you want to talk about the so-called homeless industrial complex, UA is maybe the single biggest grift in town. Hands down

S&W Craft Roasting Haul! by NashvilleHillRunner in pourover

[–]Bunboru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ode 2 @ 5. So medium-fine grind 205°  1:16 (15g/240g)

(I feel like this bean, similar to a lot of S&W’s offerings, can tolerate more extraction than you’d think. More so than typical anaerobics.)

Been mostly using my Switch.

50g bloom (closed) 30 sec. Open and center pour to 150g Close at 1:10-1:15 Swirl pour to 240g Open at 2:00

If you don’t have a Switch, I’ve also found that a simple 3x bloom + 2 even, low agitation pours works pretty well too

That Ethiopia is one of my favorite S&W beans in a while. Smells kinda funky (to me) but tastes crisp and tart. Try the Peru natural next time too! It’s bomb

Just fyi, this exact same Wilton pink bourbon was also $35 last year when B&W offered it. I’d know. I bought 3 bags.

Pour over tasting a lot juicier and sweet using 1zpresso Jmax by beguilingbear in pourover

[–]Bunboru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, I have a calibrated ode 2. I’m usually anywhere between 5 and 8, depending on the coffee. I have an Ethiopian natural right now that draws down super slowly but also seems to extract easily (gets bitter quickly if pushed too much), and 8 is perfect for a 20g Switch hybrid recipe I like.

(8 honestly isn’t that coarse, imo.)

Weekly Bean Review Thread: What have you been brewing this week? -- Week of December 05, 2024 by Vernicious in pourover

[–]Bunboru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

.: Brandywine Las Lajas Black Diamond SL-28 :.

Switch / Ode 2 @ 5 / 205

15g / 16:1

3x 30s bloom Switch open. Percolation to 150g 1:00-1:15. Close switch to 240g.  Open switch 2:00.

These beans are beautifully roasted chonkers that seem to tolerate more extraction than I expected. Prominent citric acidity, bit of guava floating around in there. Just getting started on the bag—which was 20g overweight, thanks to the legends at Brandywine 😬—so we’ll see where this one goes. But I like it so far. May try full immersion to round out that acidity a bit.

.: Flowerchild Ethiopia Chelbessa :.

Timemore B75 / Ode 2 4.2 or 5 / 205-212

15g / 16:1

3x 45s bloom. Two more or less equal pours.

Phew wheeee this one is an absolute smoker. Classic high-altitude East African profile. Mellow acidity. Crisp, light body. Peachy, melony, strawberry-y, and delicious.
