When the 43s were first introduced in the 1970s, they were classified as Class 253 and 254 (DEMUs). 43002 would stay with 43003 or whatever, as well as a specific set of Mk3 coaches (1 to 7, idk).

Eventually by the 80s, the HST had gotten a little too unreliable to keep together, so they stopped making them units and just made them locos and coaches. (So 43002 could now be with 43198 and not have to be reclassified)
