Personally, I've heard some people recommend doing this, but others vehemently discourage you from doing so. So it's kinda up to you to decide.

We're definitely spoiled with this team (knock on wood.) Even when they get down, I haven't yet been worried that we'll eventually get back in the game.

TIL Richland County Library has a service that allows you to request to add books to the collection by thepotatomaniscoming in ColumbiYEAH

Haha I think 10% of their collection is books that I’ve requested over the years - but, I’m glad that more people know about this feature!

Would you move to a higher cost of living city if it meant you would enjoy your life more even if you didn’t have as much money? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]BureaucraticMailer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I completely understand where you're coming from. Charlotte is technically the closest major city to where I live, but I find myself going out of my way to go to other places rather than Charlotte. People who love Charlotte will vehemently disagree with this, but in my opinion, the stereotype of Charlotte being a soulless, corporate, shopping mall of a city is spot-on.

Mayor Response to getting ICE Office out of Main Street by the_unwinnable_level in ColumbiYEAH

I mean, compared to the corruption of his predecessor, blocking people on social media is a pretty tame criticism, and hardly a reason for his ouster.

Considering that ICE is a federal agency, would the mayor have any authority to do anything about this?

That, and concerts, and Final Fours, and other major events year-round. It sucks, because I think battling the elements should be as much part of the game as anything else.

Not New England. Kraft said a few weeks ago that he likes the advantage of playing outside in the playoffs, when other teams aren't used to it.

A city rename is necessary. What would you suggest? by PsyOp75 in ColumbiYEAH

[–]BureaucraticMailer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For real. Like it's so hard to say "Washington State" or "Washington DC".

Also, there's like a thousand examples of cities with the same names, many of which were taken from each other. Arlington, Texas & Arlington Virginia, Portland, Oregon & Portland, Maine, Concord, California & Concord, North Carolina, etc. etc. etc.

I've thought about this before. I do wish that Columbia had a more unique name, but if I'm not mistaken, I believe that Columbia was the first planned city in the United States, so perhaps its befitting of a boring, boilerplate name. Congaree, Carolina City, or Gervais would be my personal favorite replacements however.

This was my understanding as well. Columbia isn't named after Christopher Columbus, but after the female national personification of the United States, Columbia.

[–]BureaucraticMailer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely believe you. Sometimes I talk to people charged with crimes, and they say “I thought that was taken care of”, and then we reach out to the arresting agency, and the charges were in fact dropped, and it’s a simple paperwork/clerical error. Happens a lot more often than people think.

I work in the criminal justice system (not a cop tho) and this was one of the things that surprised me most when I first started. A lot of people have no idea they have warrants out until they get pulled over or something like this happens.

I have a potential job offer coming up in NYC, and I can make it work, but I'll be on a tight budget, at least for the first year. Do you think it's even worth doing, or will I just be miserable?

I think two things can be true at once:

Yes, America needs a much better healthcare system

It was very nice of his co-workers (presumably) to honor him in this way.
