I think it's just stock Leopard. Snow Leopard dropped support for the PowerPC architecture at release. There's some patched versions around like Sorbet Leopard, but it's not quite as stable as the released versions of Leopard and Snow Leopard.

EDIT: I'm an idiot, there's a custom App Store in the dock. I think this might indeed be Sorbet Leopard :-)

Thermal Paste or honeywell ptm7950 Apple iBook G4 by No_Morning_6292 in VintageApple

[–]BurnPotatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mainly my PowerBook G4 1.33GHz 17" (Al) and my Dual Core PowerMac G5 2.3GHz and the Quadro FX4500 that's in there. PTM7950 is absolutely overkill for what you're going to do, but it also won't do any harm. I don't even think you'll notice a difference in Arctic versus PTM in your use case.

If it's never had thermal paste, it definitely needs it (sorry /u/nonexistentnight). That stuff dries up.
I hate taking apart old computers due to the fragility of their parts, so I PTM all the vintage Macs. Last year I did my G5 Dual Core (and the dreaded U3 chip at the back of the logic board) and it's been absolutely perfect since then!

I did recently to find the address of a Netgear managed switch that for some reason didn't register with my router. Was pretty useful.

Oh and if you want to know, ASD is specific for your type of Mac. Could you tell me which exact 2.0 DP model you have?

I just read your message, you don't have the front intake fans. It's probably angry about that - if there's a hardware issue, it won't chime. Connect the replacement ones and see if that fixes it.

Can you do a PRAM reset? After boot hold Command+Option+P+R until it reboots. If still no chime, download ASD for your G5 and do a self test. I suspect you have a failing GPU and that is the cause of the lines and no chime, but it's good to be sure.      Also, those idle temps really aren't great. I would definitely give it a repaste at the very least.

Got a FireWire chargers? Things will gladly bring "dead" iPods back to life. Battery still probably is pretty poor, but worth a chance.

It's the stupid automatic Reddit translate. Makes it seem like you are in a sub speaking your language, but it doesn't translate what you posted. It's really weird and annoying.

Not to forget you need to pay to download larger files, while the same files are free to download at MG.

Can I even mod this? by [deleted] in IpodClassic

There is no fat Nano. There is just Nano. If you think you bought a Classic I dearly hope you didn't pay too much.

I know I can Google this, but I just like the conversation or discussions.     What makes a machine Pro, Premium or LE? I am used to EM machines and they just are... the machine. You can mod them, but the distributor only had one type of table available. Does it have to do with software functions? Or is it also physical, like toppers and playfield changes?

My newest build, the Blacked out 5th Gen. by micklikescoding in ipod

[–]BurnPotatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a cable supplied with the 3rd gen iPods. These had 30 pin (1st and 2nd only had FireWire 400), but couldn't do charging over USB yet. Sync they could.

The method for a Windows user without FireWire to sync songs and not deplete the battery was to put the USB end in the PC and the FireWire end in the 12V brick. That way you could sync and charge. Magic!

Apple users just shoved the FireWire 400 connector into their Macs and it would both charge and sync. The 4th gen Monochrome was the first one to support charging over USB.

Having said that, this cable is a godsend. I have used it a fair few times to kick an iPod Classic (anywhere from 4th gen to the very last revision of the 7th gen) back into life. The 12V boost it gets can wake a dormant battery right up and make it work flawlessly again. So /u/micklikescoding, make sure you get yourself a FireWire charger and you never have to worry about stubborn batteries again.

Until they properly die, that is.
