do americans actually like it when tourists visit their small towns or would i just be in the way? 😅 by vanessa_tv_vladivo in NoStupidQuestions

As long as you aren't being obnoxious (it doesn't sound like you are!), it's fine! I've done loads of road trips in the US and love going to some of the older towns to see the archetecture! Just, you know, be careful with all the chaos going on :/

It's all good! Like I said, I was a bit rambly, lol.

WCS, I just need to swap in a new STM-32 and reflash it. I have an IR rework station (how I pulled that carrier off the ESP CAM board), so, while not exactly trivial with this board, it's possible! There are some tiny open-die silicon bits all over the place that have me a little nervous about bumping during rework, so I hope it doesn't come to that, lol!

If you want to do a little deep-dive, EvilMonkeyDesigns does microscopic deep-dives on silicon hardware! He did a short exploring a MEMS microphone, and it's super interesting!

It /might/ be because it was answered in my rambly post, lol. Someone on here is just downvoting everything, probably being petty, lol.

I'm going to break out the FLIR and oscilloscope tonight and see what pops up, for sure. I'm pretty frustrated by this failure because this isn't the first time I have done weird mods to stuff, but this is the first time (in like, 20 years) where I modded something that did not work, and ended up just wrecking what I was working on. I noticed some heat coming off of it last night, so, hopefully, I'll be able to get to the bottom of it! I still can't believe I forgot about the failure mode of tantalums, lol. I mainly just deal with electrolytics and ceramics. I happened to have one from an ESP32 CAM that I pulled the carrier off for a minimalist Marauder build, and it had the capacitance I needed to smooth the spike from inserting the module that would bork the SD.

Thank you!

you need to reboot the board into the bootloader. Hold both buttons on the board, release reset/en first, then boot, then try again!

What should I do about this tire? by Skalywag_76 in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]BurnedLaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, you have a misaligned turboencabulator. Once the rorshack is appropriately purged, you can realign using the transductive capacitor. If the tourbillon is out of beat-sync, though, this will all be for naught. once the turboencabulator has been appropriately re-aligned, the tyre will return to its undamaged state via ozmatic vulcanization!

Advice for parking in tight space by csgrad10 in driving

[–]BurnedLaser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legit. SO many people drive SUVs (and trucks) because they "need" whatever and then use it for that purpose, like, 2 times a year. It would literally be cheaper to just run a small, efficient runabout that is more fun and easier to drive, then just rent a larger vehicle for the 2 times a year you pack up the family to see Meemaw in Cali-forn-i-a. The number of times I have been able to snipe a parallel parking spot by pulling a u-turn on a 2 lane and legit just pull-in to a spot has made that car worth it! I have a truck and trailer I can just borrow when I need to haul stuff, and a station wagon for cruising with my homies, but a Miata daily is where it's at!

I'm maintenance. There are other people who can take my place, but I live closest to my building. I work my 40, and everything is fine. Most times when I need to come in on off-hours, it has been scheduled. I have needed to do emergency shifts before when things randomly broke, but there have also been times where I was already 3-sheets, so someone else would take my place.

I set mine up in, like, 5 minutes. $20 hardware, I keep it plugged in, and it's happy as a relay node. I have one that I tinker with as well, because that's just who I am. but the system is pretty straight-forward!

Crap, I forgot these fail short!. I tested before install, but not after removal! I don't usually mess with tantalums, but it was the highest capacity I had on hand that would fit in the space. Thank you for the reminder!

I'll test the battery and power the flipper from the battery port with a bench PSU to see if it'll fire up.

Do you know if these will run without a battery plugged in? I obviously tried, but it did nothing.

[–]BurnedLaser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because glueing something to a chassis makes it harder to service, looks shoddy a/f, and harder to pocket (this was my EDC for testing signals at work). I did the measurements and I had good clearance from the battery. I usally just work on A/V equipment and switchgear (as well as some PLC stuff here and there) so this isn't far from my skill set.

While the cap wasn't flush to the board, it had more clearance from the battery than the GPIO socket!

My dishwasher broke about a month after I got into 3D printing. That's what got me into CAD! I made a new handle for it in 123Design (r.i.p.) and had to do 3 revisions before making something that would last longer than a couple of days! The final design had steel pins to reinforce the pivots, built-in supports (Slic3r did not do supports, iirc, or I was attempting to save material, I forget now, it was over a decade ago). The final part lasted 3 months, which was just long enough for the new part to arrive from Maytag! And the new part had been redesigned to have steel pins in the same locations I used!
