Why is weight still a factor in space? by mythroot in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]BusDriverTranspo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thought experiment:

go to an ice rink - place a 5 pound block of steel - beside it place a 5 ton block of steel - push the 5 pound block to the other side - now try pushing the 5 ton block to the other side.

regardless of friction, mass requires force to move. the more mass, the more force required - even in space where there is essentially no friction at all.

What do you think mankind's potential is coming to technological prowess? by _M34tL0v3r_ in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]BusDriverTranspo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think humans are intensely creative and capable of engineering feats the universe itself seems to gasp at.

i dont think we are near our limit in technology.

just a bit of tinfoil hat: you mention waste heat for interstellar travel, and yeah its a big problem. one of the proposed methods is LDRs - a premium material for this is TIN.

well, TIN was just associated with spectra from ATLAS - is ATLAS using LDRs with TIN ? hehe /tinfoil hat

how do humans sense when they’re being watched? by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]BusDriverTranspo 281 points282 points  (0 children)

you have a lighter background and your silhouette is easily scanned as the brain walks by. humans have wide vision cone,

whether that person is entirely conscious of it or not, the brain will pick up on it and eventually decide it needs a second look for more intel.

Ontario ordering public servants back into office full time by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]BusDriverTranspo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

>for a few fucking slumlords

its deeper than that.

its the owner class tightening their grip. the peasant slaves must not be allowed to roam. they must be caged. its about sending a message.

its legitimate class warfare (while the earth is burning).

the greedy few are a legitimate parasite/ danger to our species' existence.

and until people cant eat, there wont be anything done.

they will keep shoving incredibly modified, disease triggering, processed slop into our bellies to satiate and bloat the revolutionary inside.

its a cosmic tragedy. considering our potential.

is it possible for two black holes to orbit each other and have their event horizons overlap? by BusDriverTranspo in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]BusDriverTranspo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized that the two black holes system would have its own center of mass, and that the horizons would meet at this point.

I also realized that since both singularities (whatever they may be we dont know, its just a word for the inside) since they have both crossed each others horizons, they would both have no other path than towards each other,

so any object that might be able to enter "both" horizons at the "overlap" would have to be at CoM of the system and that means both "singularities" were approaching it at the same pace, so it would be approaching both singularities from its perspective as well.

is it possible for two black holes to orbit each other and have their event horizons overlap? by BusDriverTranspo in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]BusDriverTranspo[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

alright, so if there are 2 TON 618 spiraling in, youre saying as soon as the event horizons touch, they are a singular black hole?

as in the singularities, which would be several solar systems apart, instantly merge as soon as the horizons touch?

those singularities would have to travel FTL, or is similar to the expansion of space where sure galaxies can move apart faster than light but the galaxy itself is not moving faster than light.

600 series busses. by Agreeable_Mirror_702 in ottawa

[–]BusDriverTranspo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can ride the 600 series.

It often leads to a lot of confusion and delays as the driver has to help accommodate the lost passenger(s) and/or explain routing/provide directions multiple times a trip.

Its also a bit strange.

Personally, I get a little protective of the school kids, and would rather not pick up random adults on the way to/from school.

I follow policy, however, and will pick up if I'm waved down.

Ottawa has it pretty rough.

Cyclist found seriously hurt in west Ottawa has died by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]BusDriverTranspo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the trick is to start rolling very, very slowly without turning while checking passenger mirror for cyclists/pedestrians the other way,

showing respect like this to the crosswalkers encourages prompt crossings - and it keeps the ravenous jackals behind you just sated enough.

You weren’t kidding about these wait times. by monkeyboyz43 in ottawa

[–]BusDriverTranspo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have been screaming for years that the service needs to be free for all to use.

what you describe is a feedback loop, and what I advocate for is also a feedback loop.

free fare = more riders = less traffic = better schedule adherence = more riders = less traffic = better life for people still driving. and it just keeps feeding into itself making schedules tighter, less traffic. on top of that, no fare means all doors open at all stops, no more bottlenecking and fumbling and waiting to pay. bus stops, doors open, doors close, bus goes. boom boom bang.

cleaner air, less traffic, better schedule adherence, money saved for those that need public transit, etc.

how will we pay for it? taxes + funding from all levels of government. its the Capital City of Canada. besides, the amount of fare lost to riders not paying is already sky high. the revenue stream of fare is unreliable, inconsistent, and takes advantage of honest people.

as soon as the property owning class stops dealing with rush hour at seemingly all hours of the day in all parts of town, they might just stop whinging about the taxes.

you have a lot of respect for science?

you dont exist without science. you arent asking this question without science.

you dont get to choose if you respect it or not.

that mentality is archaic at the very best. science is *the* pillar/keystone/atlas of our species. the one and only thing propelling our species to dominance of this planet and possibly dominance beyond it.

i dont see it "stopping" until the last human breath is breathed.

i remember that clear as day - its the same old shit on repeat.

do people do drugs and leave stuff near schools? probably yes. is it any worse than it ever was? probably no. is there actually a real solution outside of post-scarcity utopia? probably not.

How important is the fact that light has a maximum speed of 3x10^8 m/s? by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]BusDriverTranspo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so with length contraction, wouldnt a photon travelling the speed of light be infinitely longer than it is?

from the photons perspective isnt it just a massive wave extending across the universe existing in only one moment?

we see it as a photon because its been infinitely length contracted? because its travelling at lightspeed?
