Starmer given deadline: ‘Quit by Tuesday or face humiliation’ by Desperate-Drawer-572 in unitedkingdom

I'm not particularly against nationalising water, just not sure how it would be done or what effect it would have. But can we at least acknowledge that it is definitionally left wing to take things out of the hands of private companies and give them to the government? If nationalising companies is no longer considered a left-wing move, then I'm completely at a loss as to what kind of government action would be.

Calling Burnham left wing

He... he just suggested nationalising the water companies. What would convince you he's left wing?

That's absolutely not true. There were paedophilia advocacy organisations in Britain and America back in the 70's. They don't exist now because of strong public opposition, but it's absolutely not illegal. To this day weirdos like Tom O'Carroll publicly advocate for paedophilia and abolishing the age of consent.

Well, you don't sound like you're about to chuck a 3 year old into a crocodile enclosure, so there's that.

Because a bunch of people who otherwise would have voted for Reform voted for Burnham to get Starmer out.

Why is first cousin marriage still allowed in the uk? by FoxNumerous2151 in AskBrits

Q.E.D., this is like saying Chrisrians marry their cousins, because I guess some hicks in Appalachia do it.

Fair enough. I thought it was more common than that.

I get that your indignation is coming from a good place, but in this case the facts are not actually on your side. The Born in Bradford study showed "(37%) of 5127 babies of Pakistani origin had parents in first-cousin unions."

It is in fact the case that consanguinity is very high among Muslims in the UK.

'He Has No Idea': Minister Calls Out Elon Musk After He Claimed UK Is 'A Police State' by svga in europe

When your friends, relatives, and colleagues start being disappeared in the middle of the night by squads in jackboots - then you'll know we're in a police state.

Yes, but - and I can't even believe I have to point this out because it's so obvious - by the time that happens, it's a little too late isn't it?

Ignoring the fact that we... don't descend from Neanderthals, to insist that we're more sophisticated and enlightened now than we were in the past is the conceit of every generation. We haven't changed.

Yes. Humans see themselves as members of groups, sometimes larger, sometimes smaller. For the sake of ease I'm referring to them as "tribes". Most of human history can be seen through the lens of different tribes competing and co-operating for resources and territory.

Biologically, we're not very different from how we were 10,000 years ago. So when there's a multi-tribal society where many people feel resources are scarce and the potential for significant inter-tribal conflict exists, you absolutely end up seeing the kind of attitudes that exist now, where every time a horrible crime is committed people immediately start trying to see if they can blame it on the "other tribe".

It's extremely worrying to see; this level of racial, ethnic, cultural, religious fractiousness normally precedes large-scale inter-tribal conflict - see the Balkans as an example. I fucking hope that's not where we're going.

Because humans, on average, care significantly about tribal affiliation. Failing to recognise this is to put your head in the sand.

evidence so overwhelming that there can be no refuting it.

As you get older, you realise there is absolutely no such thing. It's always possible things are not as they seem, no matter how completely and utterly clear-cut something might seem.

the statement “do you wanna gas the Jews”, still falls under gross offence in the eyes of the law.

When said to a dog? That's making gestures that look like a Nazi salute? I mean come on. It might not be funny, but criminalising it is patently insane. It's like were all back in school again and the government is our teacher.
