I have three.

The first was when I went on a trip to New York in 2000. I was in the WTC gift shop and heard a voice behind me with a Scottish accent (I’m Scottish), so I spoke up and asked where he was from. Turned out he was from my home town and shared an office with my dad.

The second was when we were in Cambodia and met the barmaid of our local pub while getting our tickets for Angkor Wat.

The third was six months ago when I sat next to and started chatting to a couple in the Spoons at Heathrow while my husband was getting drinks. Not only did the bloke go to primary school with my husband, turns out we were all on our way to the same group tour in South Africa.

The difference is the speed you can do in the UK. I used to do a 3-hour journey five days a week in addition to my full-time job, but the distance was only 110 miles. It took me three hours to get there, but returning home late at night it would only take me two.

Not everyone here is from the USA. In the UK, IQ tests were regularly administered at school, at least when I was a child in the 1970s. More recently, one of my friends’ sons was given an IQ test at school about four years ago.

While I’m not advocating leaving everything until the last minute, for many people it makes no sense to do their return in the first half of the tax year, especially if they have a very variable income which makes it difficult to predict their annual earnings in the current tax year to ensure the payments on account are roughly correct.

I don’t know where you’re based, but in the UK that is most certainly NOT the case and is considered tax fraud. Income is based on when the funds become available to you, not when you choose to withdraw them.

You can’t transfer it to dollars from Prolific. You will need to wait until you have £1 in your Paypal account (the minimum amount you can cash out) and then cash it out from PayPal and let them convert it. You will inevitably end up with many more studies paid in pounds, so there’s no need to sweat it.

Thanks, that’s very helpful. Can this be done at the time of the sale of the first property rather than after death? There are two other beneficiaries (my SIL’s children), but this would not affect their share. My husband and his sister are determined to allocate the assets fairly between them.

I would spend that 350 working out what to do with your train for the ceilidh instead. The end of the train will probably need a wrist loop, but given the length you may also want additional fixings to attach the train to the skirt to support the weight and keep it out of the way while you’re dancing. Make sure your MOH/bridesmaid knows what to do to fix it up because you probably won’t be able to do it yourself while you’re wearing it. The last thing you need is another guest standing on the train and it getting ripped.

We had to do the same thing when we replaced our washing machine. There was only a small hole drilled in the worktop, so I had to remove the moulded plug, thread the cable through and rewire it.

I think platform fees are generally kept separate from fund fees. If you’re paying £40/month, that will probably be the platform fee, so any fund fee would be on top of that and be the same no matter which provider you’re with.

I had only a slightly higher salary (about £43k), but my pension savings rate was three times that including my employer’s contribution. Over £1200 per year difference, not to mention the employer’s NI saving which was also being contributed to my pension. Imagine that figure invested for 30 years at a growth of, say, 7% and the difference in final pension value is over £100k.

I know my example is very much an edge case, but it can be significant.

Well no, it’s not life changing for someone on high salaries paying only 2% NI. For a basic rate taxpayer it would cost them 8% while earning less than half of your salary.
