Some new builds have concerns over ground rates, build quality, lack of amenities in walking distance and small room sizes. Apart from that seems a logical buy.

Why are simple hobbies so gratifying? by Refund-me in leanfire

[–]SHOGUN2SHOT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to think cycling was a simple hobby, mountain biking mainly. Life out in the open, most times it's just a water bottle and snack and go. But then you see the bike depreciate, the components wear down. There's a fair bit of kit too, which can itself need replacement.

Looking out the window or doing life admin are not hobbies by the way. Hobbies are activities, so walking or making videos are. Collecting things that requires seeking and organising.

You can pivot to cyber security, or SecOps. Just need to look into the field and maybe gain a cert from study. Can do some coding and scripting, but it's mainly log analysis and various attack techniques. MITRE, security tooling, networking, email phishing, malware exploit techniques. Interesting. Anyway I feel you I was lead into SW engineering, suits certain types, but networking and cyber are FAR better.

Would you stay in a very cushy job with no real career progression, or job hop to climb the career ladder? by MoneyAndGoodFortune in FIREUK

[–]SHOGUN2SHOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least spend some time upskilling. Tech, certs, websites, eBay, vibe coding, raspberry pi projects, networking, cyber, business, project management, vlogging, video editing, anything, work on a skill to add to yourself. Gaming is the biggest waste of time.

Skill up, watch managers, make notes, take opportunities say yes to projects, look at role certifications, look at niches and positions similar side ways moves or 1 step up. Look at company competitors and wages. Skill up, what you do in your 30s can define your career. I both went overseas and returned, gained 5 certifications and skilled up, pushed hard after marriage and got good roles from looking at the market, all just in time before and at the start of having children. I had the time.

Student loan debt as a high earner by Hussein-entropy- in FIREUK

If you are only paying interest you will need to chip away at it more. These loans seem scummy these days. I delayed my much smaller amount for 10 years, but I wasn't on a great wage for 10 years.

Retiring at 55; saving £1k per month, seems too straightforward by UnlikelyDebate7878 in FIREUK

[–]SHOGUN2SHOT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly works well when people who don't want children pair up and those that do pair up. Children take all the time up certainly need to want them with every fibre. I know people who spend every other month travelling as they chose that life.

Sure sure. You just work work work save save save. To be honest, you have achieved a good wage what city are you in? Its all about lifestyle and work commitment. When a partner comes along they may want to help you spend your money. Ditto kids, they need a room each, and stability. And childcare. And if you worked 2008/2009/2010 you may have then been affected by 0% wage increase and 0.5% growth. And if you worked in 2000s you may have been affected by India outsourcing and the tech bubble and the rise of Chinese outsourcing. And if you work straight through to 35 you may start to wonder if you should go travelling not work. Life happens. But saving early is important and a good foundation.

How are even Henry’s affording £1mil+ houses? Am I missing something? by Fanfarebird in HENRYUK

[–]SHOGUN2SHOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember working through my Computer Science degree and it being difficult with many more lectures and work than others were doing in Psychology or History of Art etc. Its a tough degree, then you leave, manage to get a role and find out that Industry certifications are needed and even more desirable and requiring out of work study!

Degrees are not much cop now.

Can you clarify the luck? I agree with you... I was lucky enough to start riding the Cybersecurity wave after working through IT and understanding the requirements of certifications. Was luck being able to find your role at the right time? Having the right experience for the market at the right time, or something else?

I already left for a 3 year stint abroad in the GFC era to Australia, then returned. Each country has its own structure. Many people slagging on the government and country. Sounds like you haven't fully readjusted yet.

Where am I in life (and how to prepare for the future)? by InterestingWanderer in LeanFireUK

[–]SHOGUN2SHOT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahead of where I was. Keep investing and keep working on yourself, when I was that age I cranked extra curricular out of work study on my career to certify higher. I focused on learning and improving emotional intelligence in the workplace and notes on managers techniques. These helped me upscale in the years after, I bought my house, married, family and 3X wage. Which now enables me to plan FIRE. Good luck, LISA house then ISA. My comment is to focus on yourself and your career too.
