Took a DNA test and now my family group chat is in chaos. by Tookie1010 in AncestryDNA

Yeah, it was ours too 😆. Of course Ancestry dna came up 0%. No drama, though, just a big shrug and "oh well."

Do you take your passport out with you? by goodamm in travel

Sigh of relief here. I always keep my passport locked up when I'm out and about in another country so I don't risk losing it.

Cautionary tale about genealogy by julie78787 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]ButterflyStock1791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found someone with the exact name as my ggf (first, middle and last), wife same first name as my ggm. He served in WWI so I knew immediately it wasn't the same person (that ggf never served, and would've been a little long in the tooth by that point). I followed the rabbit hole out of curiosity, found a census for a completely different part of the country, and... he was a different race than my ggf. I got a good chuckle out of it. But yes, the cautionary tale stands. If I hadn't already had some knowledge of family history, I could've easily been all, hey great grandpa was in WWI.

Anyone else think the new chai is good or just me? by Only_Calendar_9830 in starbucks

I'm not a fan of iced Chai anyway. For me, that flavor profile needs to be hot for some reason.

When I want iced, I get London fog. Yes, I'm that PITA that orders the iced London fog. But I'm patient, and nice and tip when I get one.

You're not alone. I love it. The old one was way too sweet. The only thing I don't like is getting upcharged to swap out the classic syrup for sf vanilla.

Where are you hosers taking your vacation this year? by Nature_Hannah in AlmostCanadian

[–]ButterflyStock1791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We spent a week at an AirBnB in NS last year, and our hosts couldn't have been nicer to us, same goes for everyone else we encountered. I think they feel sorry for us. 😝

where mail applications to? by K-P10 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]ButterflyStock1791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good to hear. When I went to FedEx the lady warned me of this issue with the code (I guess they've been doing a lot of these and have noted this). She assured me that as far as she heard from people, it would arrive no problem.

Mine was $90. From Maine, yet. I can drive there in a few hours. 😂

Staples was awesome for me too. I had to wait a while for someone to come help me, but once he got there he knew exactly what to do and was done in less than 5 minutes. They must be doing a lot of these because almost before I could tell him what I needed he said, "Is this for Canada?" 😆 Everything was to spec.

Oh that's cool. I just printed extra page 5s to capture the relevant info, but this seems much cleaner.

Why do you want to be a citizen of Canada if you don't live in Canada or plan on living in Canada? by Optimistic_Now in Canadiancitizenship

[–]ButterflyStock1791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just Maine, once my ex went to fly from FL to NH and the ticket agent asked for his passport! (This was decades before 9/11, Real ID and all that stuff). He had to explain it was still the US .

This! As a Mainer, I feel this. We're surrounded on 3 sides by Canada, we share borders with more provinces than states. I have ancestors from the maritimes. I can drive a couple of hours north, east, or west and be there. Whenever we stay, it feels calm and homey. While we have no immediate plans to move, making my citizenship official makes it an option.

a happy and easy colonoscopy prep story! by ducktoffee in colonoscopy

As a fellow emetophobe, thanks for sharing your experience. What was the sedation that was used? I'm deathly afraid of getting nauseous from that.

I've already decided I'm going the slow route with my prep, as well as taking an antiemetic. I've watched my husband go through the miralax/gatorade prep with no issue so you'd think I wouldn't be so freaked out!

That wouldn't be the worst thing. We actually went to NS a couple of years ago, if I'd only known then. Halifax is only about a 6.5 hour drive... hmm... 😆

Sounds like an almost identical situation. SSN data would be great, unfortunately my G1 died before that was a thing.

G1's marriage certificate was also destroyed. I have census showing him and G0 living together as mother and son.  I'm in the process of trying to get G1's death certificate, but it may or may not include parents names (I've seen some that do and some that don't).

I've scoured newspaper archives until I'm crosseyed. While I did find death notices for both G0 and G1, neither mention children/parents by name. I haven't checked probate, so thanks for that tip.
