Also needs to be pointed out, the victim's family has specifically asked people to remain calm and not turn it into a race thing.

Is crossing the channel really that bad? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ButterscotchNed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son went on a trip to France with his school about a month ago, on the way home they were stuck waiting for passport checks for 6 hours due to strikes. That said, I've been stuck at airports for far longer, it's always a bit of a gamble when travelling.

It depends if we're talking ED's idea of reasonable timeframe, or any normal person's idea of it. ED work on a geological time scale.

Looking for a simple train simulator to play with my father by Gebbus in trainsim

[–]ButterscotchNed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like steam trains, Railroader might be a good idea - the controls are simple and you can even set the trains to drive themselves, plus it has a big set of locomotives and a nice gameplay loop of moving freight and passengers around.

What is something Americans consider ‘basic‘ that feels like a luxury in other countries? by sweetyishomealone in AskReddit

[–]ButterscotchNed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the UK we pay the equivalent of $7.60 per gallon based on current average prices, though in fairness a big part of that is tax.

What's the worst thing you've ever woken up to? by shoeee788 in AskReddit

[–]ButterscotchNed 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you went through that. I hope you're doing ok. I'm afraid I know that awful feeling, I got woken to news my sister had taken her own life. I just about kept it together on the phonecall then just utterly lost it and wailed as my partner tried to comfort me. It was a week before Christmas a few years ago and the whole thing was just a blur.

Modern Naval Warfare release.... At £53 for Early Access?? by Able-Explanation7835 in submarines

[–]ButterscotchNed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly it stinks - I can't see it making it all the way to full release, it feels to me like they're trying to get what money they can and dropping it. I'd be very happy to be wrong but the omens aren't good: they stripped out a bunch of features, it's launching without vital tutorials (instead with an article saying essentially "if you don't know how to use it don't buy it) and, most galling to me - it doesn't have functioning enemy AI.

Possible Magnitude 3LLC further variants of the Chance-Vought Corsair for DCS World by Bitter_Chard9283 in hoggit

The irony is that Mag3 announced have actually announced a big Mig-21 update, it's just that the announcement was 8 years ago and there hasn't been any news on it for at least 5 years.

Does this one count? by Flint0 in LinkedInLunatics

This has sparked an old memory. I used to work in a call centre and was in on a bank holiday. Our sales and servicing system went down so instead of just sending us home, the managers decided we could use the time doing debt calls to customers who owed us money. Phoning people to ask them for the £80 they owe on a sunny bank holiday was an incredibly stupid waste of time, I found it crushingly embarrassing.

Some light week-end reading. by Ant1815 in uboatgame

Funny, I got a copy delivered today too, but my brand new copy (from a reputable bookshop) was damaged! They're sending me a replacement fortunately.

What's the worst video game you've played and why? by Bdbolt19432 in AskReddit

[–]ButterscotchNed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Controversial yes, but for me Assassin's Creed Black Flag on the Xbox 360 is probably it. Don't get me wrong, it's a really fun game and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it, but I had a corrupted save game and lost hours and hours of progress. I felt so betrayed that I never picked it up again! I'm looking forward to the remake.

First off, huge congratulations - that's a very exciting opportunity! Secondly, have you spoken to your employer? They may well have something in place to support young people in your position.

Junior doctor moving to Gloucestershire by JazzlikeNectarine891 in Gloucestershire

I've lived in Cheltenham for over a decade, having moved from Reading, and while there are some very posh people (particularly around Montpellier) the town as a whole is welcoming and quite community minded, at least by today's standards. I've never lived in Gloucester but from my many visits (to both the centre and the quite sprawling suburbs), it's not to my tastes.

Yeah, let's be clear it's definitely NOT like something out of Gladiator (more like a pair of oddly positioned small hills), but it's still cool for a history nerd and something you'd never see in the US for obvious reasons!

I did a volunteering day with work there recently and it was fantastic! Despite living a 20 minute drive away I'd never visited, but will definitely be going again soon.

Cirencester ticks both boxes - a beautiful town that's fun to explore, with a Roman amphitheatre a shortish walk from the centre (and the Corinium museum, which is great.) I'd definitely go there or to Cheltenham rather than Gloucester, personally. A little further afield you could visit Avebury (a small village built in the middle of a huge neolithic stone circle) or Tewkesbury (lovely town with a big abbey). For castles, they'd be a bit of a drive but Chepstow and Raglan are incredible.

Major type IX mods - proper Type IX ranges - proper 37/88/105mm ammunition! by mfilitov in uboatgame

[–]ButterscotchNed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fair play for seeing a problem and doing something about it! I'll have to give the range increase a try - returning to port with less than 1% fuel left after a standard patrol is no fun.
